The most useful Pinterest cleaning tricks are small, task-specific methods that repurpose ordinary supplies: vinegar for mineral buildup, lemon and salt for cutting boards, baking soda for odors, and old socks or toothbrushes for detail work. They are ideas collected by Country Living in a December 2017 roundup, not controlled product tests, so treat each method as a starting point and check the surface manufacturer’s guidance first.

The roundup is titled “25 of the Most Popular Cleaning Tricks on Pinterest,” but the accessible page text does not reveal complete instructions for every numbered entry. The guide below explains every method for which actionable details are available and clearly identifies entries whose full recipes are not documented.

What these Pinterest cleaning tricks have in common
Most of the methods rely on pantry staples or objects already in a home: bread, potatoes, salt, lemons, vinegar, baking soda, socks, tongs, washcloths and old toothbrushes. Their usefulness comes from matching a tool to a particular kind of dirt rather than treating one mixture as a universal cleaner.

- Acidic ingredients such as vinegar and lemon are used for mineral deposits and some food residue.
- Absorbent or mildly abrasive materials such as bread, salt and baking soda are used to lift marks, odors or stuck-on grime.
- Small brushes and improvised tools reach grooves, tracks, blinds and upholstery texture.
- Dwell time matters. Several methods work by letting a wet ingredient sit before scrubbing or rinsing.
Pinterest saves and shares show interest, not proof of effectiveness. Country Living’s figures are historical snapshots from 2017 and should not be read as current rankings.
Kitchen and cooking-surface tricks
Lift marks with a ball of bread
Roll de-crusted white or rye bread into a ball and gently dab marks rather than rubbing aggressively. The roundup also mentions bread for small spills, residue in a coffee grinder, and light dusting or polishing of pictures. Use a clean, dry piece and test an inconspicuous area first; crumbs and moisture can create a new cleanup problem on porous surfaces.
Scrub rust from cast iron with potato, salt and oil
Use a cut potato as the handle, add salt as the abrasive, and use vegetable oil as described in the roundup. Work over the rusty area, then remove residue and dry the pan thoroughly. Cast iron can rust again if left wet, so do not store it until the surface is completely dry. The source does not provide a measured ratio or a guaranteed finish, so avoid treating this as a substitute for the skillet maker’s care instructions.

Freshen a cutting board with lemon and salt
Sprinkle salt over the board, use a cut lemon to scrub the surface, and wipe away the loosened residue. Rinse and dry according to the board’s material. Wood, bamboo, plastic and composite boards react differently to moisture and abrasion; do not leave lemon juice sitting on a surface that the manufacturer says must stay dry.

- CONVENIENT LYSOL SPRAY: This all purpose cleaner has fast-acting sanitization, so you can kill 99.9% of bacteria in a flash
Remove cabinet gunk with oil and baking soda
Mix one part vegetable oil with two parts baking soda. Work the paste into greasy cabinet buildup with an old toothbrush, then wipe away the loosened film with a clean cloth. Because oil can darken unfinished wood and baking soda can dull delicate coatings, patch-test inside a door or on another hidden spot before treating visible cabinetry.
Clean a microwave with a household-ingredient method
The roundup includes a household-ingredient approach for splattered food and odors, but the accessible text does not identify the complete ingredient list or heating procedure. Do not infer a recipe from this mention. For any steam-cleaning method you choose, use a microwave-safe container, leave room for expansion, allow the contents to cool, and wipe with the appliance manufacturer’s precautions in mind.
Use a drain sequence, not a random mixture
The documented sequence is:
- Pour boiling water into the drain.
- Add 1/2 cup baking soda.
- Follow with a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup hot water.
- When bubbling stops, run hot water for about one minute.
This is a maintenance-style treatment, not a guaranteed way to clear a solid blockage. Never combine it with commercial drain chemicals, bleach or other cleaners; dangerous reactions can occur. Stop if the drain remains blocked and use a method approved for your plumbing.

Soak a shower head in vinegar and water
Combine equal parts vinegar and water in a plastic bag, place the bag around the shower head, and leave it for 15–20 minutes. Remove the bag and rinse the fixture thoroughly. Secure the bag so it cannot fall, and check the finish first: acids may damage some plated, stone or specialty surfaces. Do not leave the solution on longer simply because a deposit looks stubborn.

Make shower-door tracks workable again
Soak paper towels in distilled white vinegar and lay them along the tracks for 30 minutes. Scrub with an old toothbrush, using a cotton swab for tight spots, then wipe and rinse away residue. This was reported by Country Living as having more than 24,000 Pinterest pins in 2017, a historical popularity figure rather than an effectiveness rating. Vinegar can affect natural stone and some metal finishes, so confirm compatibility first.
Use small brushes where a cloth cannot reach
A recurring lesson in the roundup is that a detail-cleaning brush set—or a clean, retired toothbrush—does more useful work than a large sponge in grooves and hardware. Keep one brush for bathroom use and another for kitchen or upholstery work to avoid transferring grime.
Mattresses, carpets and upholstered furniture
Deodorize a mattress with baking soda and a vacuum
Sprinkle baking soda mixed with essential oil over the mattress, allow it to sit, and vacuum the residue away. The source does not specify an oil quantity or a required dwell time. Use only a light layer, keep liquids away from the mattress, and test any scented ingredient for sensitivity before applying it broadly. A vacuum with an upholstery attachment can help remove fine powder from seams.

The roundup recommends a mixture of Dawn soap and hydrogen peroxide for carpet stains and says it can also be used on mattresses. It does not state a ratio, concentration or dwell time. Hydrogen peroxide can lighten dyes and damage some fibers, so patch-test in a hidden area, use ventilation, and blot rather than saturate. Do not combine it with chlorine bleach, ammonia or other cleaners.

Clean microfiber with rubbing alcohol and a bristle brush
For a microfiber couch, the listed method uses rubbing alcohol and a bristle brush. Apply sparingly to a small hidden section first, let it dry, and check for color change or texture damage. Work in a ventilated room away from flames, and follow the upholstery care code before using any solvent.

Turn old socks into dusting cloths
Reuse clean old socks as static dusting cloths in place of disposable refills. Slip one over your hand, wipe surfaces, then launder it separately if it collected greasy or dusty residue. Keep a separate set for floors, bathrooms and electronics.
Clean blinds with tongs and a washcloth
Wrap washcloths around a pair of tongs, secure them, apply disinfectant spray to the cloth rather than flooding the blind, and draw the covered tongs across each slat. The roundup also suggests an old sock as an alternative. Test disinfectant on a hidden slat, because painted, wooden and fabric blinds have different care requirements.
Try the nail-polish-remover shoe trick cautiously
The roundup names a nail-polish-remover method for shoe stains but does not provide enough detail in the accessible text to specify the product, amount or shoe material. Acetone can strip dye, dissolve finishes and damage synthetics. Do not use it on a visible area without the shoe maker’s approval and a patch test.

Walls and cleaning organization
Wall cleaning: the four-supply entry is incomplete
Country Living reports a wall-cleaning trick using four supplies and says it had been shared more than 42,000 times in 2017. The accessible description does not identify all four supplies or the sequence, so there is no reliable recipe to reproduce. Use the paint manufacturer’s cleaning instructions instead, starting with a barely damp, soft cloth in an inconspicuous area.
Use a checklist as a system, not a hack
The roundup includes a cleaning checklist and reports more than 20,000 pins in 2017. A checklist is useful because it converts scattered jobs into a repeatable routine: list rooms, group tasks by frequency, and mark the last completed date. It does not make a cleaner stronger or safer, so keep product directions and ventilation requirements alongside it.
Entries whose complete procedures are not available
Window tracks
A two-ingredient window-track method is highlighted, but the accessible excerpt does not identify both ingredients. Do not guess the missing formula; use a vacuum crevice tool, a damp cloth and the window manufacturer’s care directions instead.
Toilet-cleaning bombs
Three-ingredient cleaning cubes are described as a hands-free way to freshen a toilet bowl, but the source text available here does not list the ingredients, quantities or storage instructions. Never combine unknown cleaners in a toilet, particularly products containing bleach or acids.
Slow-cooker cleaning
The roundup calls one slow-cooker method “approved by over 300,000 pinners” in its 2017 presentation, but the complete procedure is not exposed. Popularity cannot supply the missing temperature, liquid, timing or material-safety information. Follow the appliance manual instead.
Choosing the right tool for each job
| Task or surface | Ingredients and tools named | Preparation or contact time | Cleanup step | Popularity figure reported in 2017 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shower head | Equal parts vinegar and water; plastic bag | 15–20 minutes | Remove bag and rinse | Not stated |
| Shower-door tracks | Distilled white vinegar; paper towels; toothbrush; cotton swab | 30 minutes | Scrub, wipe and rinse | More than 24,000 pins |
| Drain | Boiling water; 1/2 cup baking soda; 1 cup vinegar plus 1 cup hot water | Until bubbling stops; then hot water for about one minute | Run hot water | Not stated |
| Mattress deodorizing | Baking soda; essential oil; vacuum | Not stated | Vacuum powder away | Not stated |
| Cabinet grease | 1 part vegetable oil; 2 parts baking soda; old toothbrush | Work into residue; time not stated | Wipe off paste and loosened grease | Not stated |
| Microfiber couch | Rubbing alcohol; bristle brush | Not stated | Allow to dry and inspect texture | Not stated |
| Blinds | Tongs; washcloth; disinfectant spray, or old sock | Not stated | Wipe each slat | Not stated |
The table preserves what is actually specified: “not stated” means the roundup excerpt does not give a value, not that the step has no waiting time.
Safety checks before trying a viral cleaning hack
- Read the surface, appliance or upholstery care label first.
- Patch-test any acid, solvent, peroxide, oil or abrasive in a hidden place.
- Ventilate rooms when using vinegar, rubbing alcohol, disinfectant or peroxide.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, alcohol or an unknown toilet or drain product.
- Use eye and hand protection when splashes are possible.
- Keep children and pets away from soaking bags, powders and cleaning mixtures.
- Rinse residues thoroughly where food touches the surface or where skin may contact it.
What the popularity numbers really mean
Country Living’s counts—more than 24,000 pins for the shower-track method, over 20,000 for the checklist, over 300,000 pinners for the slow-cooker entry and over 42,000 shares for the wall trick—describe Pinterest activity reported in 2017. Pinterest changes its displays and counts over time, and a save does not establish that a method works on every material. Use those numbers to understand why a tip spread, not to choose a cleaner without checking compatibility.
