A pintuck pillowcase has narrow, stitched folds that stand slightly proud of the fabric and create a ridged, geometric texture. You can buy one ready-made or sew the detail yourself; a published pattern demonstrates pintucks arranged in parallel rows on a separate band joined to the pillowcase body.
What is a pintuck pillowcase?
A pintuck is a narrow fold held in place with stitching. Repeated in rows, the folds add texture to a pillowcase without making pintuck a type of fabric. The construction and placement can vary: in American Patchwork & Quilting’s example, parallel pintucks decorate a band that is then attached to the case body.

How to sew pintucks on a pillowcase band
American Patchwork & Quilting’s published project makes one case with a finished size of 30 × 20 inches and says it fits a standard-size bed pillow. The dimensions and materials below belong to that pattern, not to all pillowcases.

- 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric
- A size 4.0/100 twin sewing-machine needle and two thread spools
- A water-soluble marking pen
- An optional pintuck foot
Mark and stitch the tucks
- Mark parallel lines on the band fabric, spacing them 1/2 inch apart.
- Fit the twin needle and stitch rows over the marked lines to form the tucks. The pattern notes that changing the machine’s upper tension changes how the tucks look.
- Join the completed band to the pillowcase body as directed by the pattern.
The optional foot is a sewing aid, not a requirement in this project. This is one documented approach; it is not the only way to construct a pillowcase or add pintucks.

How pillowcase sizing varies in sewing patterns
Utah State University Extension’s Designer Pillowcase instructions give body dimensions for their own rolled-construction design. These are pattern dimensions, not universal finished-case standards or retail measurements.

The Extension method rolls the border and body together to form the seam and cautions sewers not to catch the roll in the stitching. It differs from the separate pintuck-band example above. When choosing or adapting a pattern, check its stated finished size against the pillow rather than assuming its size label matches another pattern or store listing.
Buy or sew?
A ready-made case is the straightforward choice if the goal is the finished look without sewing. Making one is useful if you want to choose the fabric and create the detail yourself; the published project provides a concrete materials list and band method. Neither route guarantees a particular feel or durability: the cited product listings and pattern are not comparative wear tests.
