The pistil stitch pairs a straight stitch with a French knot to make a raised, knotted end—an easy way to suggest flower stamens, petals, or a decorative center. In the AllPeopleQuilt demonstration, American Patchwork & Quilting Editors show Sue Spargo’s method from Creative Stitching.
Where the pistil stitch works
Use pistil stitches for flower stamens and petals, or arrange them as a decorative flower center. They can also add an outline or a small detail to an appliqué. For a ring of stamens, vary the stitch lengths rather than making every one identical; the uneven pattern gives the flower a more natural look.

Needle and thread for the demonstration
The tutorial recommends a size 1 milliner’s needle. Its long shape and uniform shaft help the wrapped knot pass through the fabric. The demonstration uses size 8 pearl cotton; the instructor also suggests sizes 3, 5, or 12. These are the tutorial’s material choices, not requirements for every pistil stitch.

How to make a pistil stitch
- Bring the needle up where the stitch should begin, such as near the flower center.
- Choose the stitch direction and endpoint. In this demonstration, the endpoint is about a quarter inch or three-eighths of an inch from the starting point.
- Wrap the thread around the needle five times. Keep the wraps snug and together on the needle.
- Insert the needle at the endpoint. Hold the wraps taut against the fabric as you pull the needle through.
- Repeat around the center or across the area you want to decorate. Vary the lengths if you want an irregular stamen effect.
The five wraps and spacing are specific to the AllPeopleQuilt demonstration; adjust the stitch to suit your design and fabric.
