Pixar in a Box is a free online curriculum from Pixar Animation Studios and Khan Academy that shows how math, science, and the arts contribute to filmmaking. Its animation unit gives learners a practical starting point: explore animation curves and use Khan Academy’s online tools to animate a bouncing ball. The course spans far more than animation, so it works best as an introduction to the ideas behind Pixar filmmaking—not as a professional animation qualification.

What is Pixar in a Box?

Pixar in a Box is a collaboration between Pixar and Khan Academy. Pixar describes it as a series of tutorials about how traditional school subjects—including math, science, and the arts—connect to the work of making its films. Khan Academy’s course page notes that the collaboration is sponsored by Disney.

The goal is to make those connections visible through examples drawn from filmmaking. Khan Academy’s 2015 announcement, for instance, described combinatorics for robot swarms in WALL•E, parabolic arcs for grass in Brave, and geometric transformations for building sets. The course is therefore a broad introduction to creative and technical ideas in filmmaking, rather than a course devoted only to drawing characters.

Pixar’s Pixar in a Box overview and Khan Academy’s original announcement explain the collaboration and its premise.

Is Pixar in a Box free?

Yes. Khan Academy’s original announcement called Pixar in a Box a free online curriculum, and its Help Center says the platform’s library of lessons is free for anyone. The Help Center article was updated September 20, 2021; consult Khan Academy’s current pages for any account or access details that apply to you.

The reviewed course pages describe online lessons and activities, not a required physical purchase. The animation unit uses Khan Academy’s own animation tools, so these sources do not establish a need to buy a drawing tablet, software license, or book to take it.

What do you learn in Pixar in a Box?

Khan Academy’s course listing shows 15 units and 69 skills. The subjects move across the filmmaking pipeline, from story and visual design to technical processes:

  • Orientation and storytelling
  • Lighting, simulation, and color science
  • Virtual cameras, effects, and patterns
  • Rigging, animation, and environment and character modeling
  • Crowds, sets and staging, and rendering

That range makes the course useful to learners curious about how different disciplines contribute to a finished film. Examples in Khan Academy’s announcement include weighted averages for turning simple models into more realistic characters and simultaneous equations used to paint Pixar images.

See the current Pixar in a Box unit listing for the course organization.

Where should an aspiring animator start?

The animation unit is a natural entry point if your main interest is movement. It introduces animation as a sequence of images and uses animation curves to explain how an object’s motion changes over time. In its online activity, learners animate a bouncing ball; the unit’s lesson list also includes straight-ahead animation, squash and stretch, and a hands-on activity animating Luxo Jr.

A companion math lesson connects that practical work to interpolation: learners move from linear interpolation to Bezier curves, including de Casteljau’s algorithm. These concepts help describe and control motion between key points. The activity offers a way to try animation ideas, while the math lesson explores the curves behind them.

Khan Academy’s Animation unit lists these lessons and activities.

Who is the course for, and how long are the animation lessons?

The two animation entry points have different stated audiences and time estimates. Khan Academy labels its introductory animation lesson appropriate for all ages and estimates 45–60 minutes. Its mathematics-of-animation-curves lesson is aimed at grades eight through high school and is estimated at 30–40 minutes. These are lesson estimates, not guarantees of mastery.

Entry point Focus Stated audience Estimated time
Introductory animation lesson Animation curves and a bouncing-ball activity using Khan Academy’s tools All ages, according to Khan Academy 45–60 minutes, according to Khan Academy
Mathematics of animation curves Linear interpolation, Bezier curves, and de Casteljau’s algorithm Grade eight through high school, according to Khan Academy 30–40 minutes, according to Khan Academy

Both estimates and audience labels are from the Khan Academy Animation unit. Learners can choose the practical activity first or start with the mathematical explanation depending on which seems more approachable.

Can Pixar and Khan Academy teach you animation?

They can introduce animation concepts and give you a guided opportunity to practice them. The bouncing-ball activity is a concrete first exercise, and the linked lessons explain motion through animation curves. The wider curriculum also helps place animation among the other creative and technical work involved in making a film.

The official course pages describe lessons and activities; they do not claim that completing them confers a credential, prepares someone for professional work, or replaces a structured animation program. Treat Pixar in a Box as a free way to explore the subject and decide what you want to learn next.
