PixelPerf is a bespoke image-to-metal service from Arrow Metal. An illustration, photograph or graphic is translated into a CAD drawing that controls a punching machine, producing a perforated panel whose pattern reads as the original image from the intended viewing distance. The same panel can be designed as a mural, privacy screen, façade, sign, balustrade or ventilation element, but its appearance and performance depend on the image, scale, background, material, finish and site brief.

What PixelPerf image perforation actually is
Arrow Metal describes PixelPerf as “specialised design and tooling technology that creates perforated metal art from images, photos, and illustrations.” In practice, the image is converted into a field of differently sized or arranged perforations. From close range, a viewer sees holes in metal; from the design viewing distance, the varying density of openings creates light and dark tones that form the picture.
The crucial intermediate file is a CAD drawing. It is the production instruction for the punching equipment, not merely a visual mock-up. Arrow Metal’s PixelPerf service description and image-perforation guide explain that the team develops this drawing from the supplied artwork and reviews it with the client before manufacture.
PixelPerf should therefore be specified as a custom architectural system. A generic perforated sheet cannot automatically reproduce a particular photograph, and a successful image does not by itself prove that a panel satisfies structural, fire, acoustic, weather or building-code requirements. Those project requirements must be confirmed separately with the fabricator, architect and relevant engineers.
How an image becomes a finished panel
- Choose the image and the job it must do. Start with the subject, intended viewing distance, panel location and whether the panel is decorative or must also provide privacy, shade, ventilation, signage or another function.
- Develop the image treatment. Arrow Metal says its team can advise on image suitability and adjustments. Contrast, tonal range, cropping, orientation and the amount of detail that can survive at the final panel size are resolved at this stage.
- Review the CAD drawing. The image is converted into the perforation pattern used by the punching machinery. Check that faces, lettering, edges and important tonal transitions still read at the actual scale, not only on a computer screen.
- Confirm panel dimensions and construction. Set the overall panel size, number of panels, joints, returns, folds, curves, fixing zones and any framing or support. Arrow Metal’s 2024 FAQ says a single panel can be up to 5 metres long; a larger mural can be split across multiple panels.
- Select metal and finish. The specification should identify the metal, thickness, colour, coating or other finish, and the exposure conditions. Finish choices affect appearance, corrosion resistance and maintenance, so they should be approved for the actual interior or exterior environment.
- Manufacture, finish and inspect. The panels are cut or punched to the approved drawing, finished, quality-checked and prepared for delivery. Confirm what dimensional, visual and coating checks are included in the project quotation.

Images that produce a readable perforated picture
Prioritise strong light-dark contrast
Arrow Metal recommends images with clear contrast between light and dark areas. Distinct tonal blocks give the perforation software enough separation to create a legible pattern. A flat, low-contrast photograph may lose facial features, lettering and depth when reduced to holes. Converting an image to black and white can work because the software interprets tonal differences, but monochrome treatment is not a guarantee of fidelity; the CAD preview and the viewing distance still determine the result.
Match image detail to panel size and viewing distance
A larger finished image can preserve more detail, according to Arrow Metal’s guidance. If a small panel is expected to show fine facial features or tiny type, the holes and webs may become too small to manufacture or too visually dense to read. Decide which features matter most, enlarge the artwork where possible and judge the design at the distance from which people will normally see it.
Account for the background and the light
The same perforation pattern can look very different against a solid wall, open sky, landscaping or an illuminated interior. Arrow Metal says its team considers whether light sits behind the panel or whether there is a solid backdrop. A dark backing can make openings read differently from a bright interior, while changing daylight can alter apparent contrast. Request visualisations for the real background and both day and night conditions when the panel is prominent.
Keep production complexity in the brief
Image complexity may affect production cost, the manufacturer notes. Multiple tones, very fine transitions, unusual panel geometry and extensive alignment can require more design time or more detailed review. Ask for the cost impact of revisions before approving a complex image, and avoid treating a marketing preview as a final manufacturing drawing.

Can PixelPerf provide privacy, shade or ventilation?
It can be designed to support those functions, but the outcome is project-specific. Opening percentage, hole pattern, viewing angle, background, panel spacing, orientation and the surrounding construction all matter. The following distinctions keep an attractive image from being mistaken for a tested performance specification.

For a building approval or performance claim, obtain project-specific calculations, test reports and code advice. The published PixelPerf material does not provide a standard energy-saving percentage, fire rating, acoustic result, warranty term or lifecycle analysis.
Architectural applications and documented examples
Arrow Metal lists privacy screens, staircases, balustrades, fencing, themed murals, interior wall panels, ventilation screens, signage and façades as potential applications. The image can be a prominent identity element or a quieter layer within a larger envelope.

Arrow Metal says it offers metal and finish choices and reviews drawings with the client. The final selection should be recorded in the project documentation rather than inferred from a sample image. Common failure modes and practical fixes
The picture looks muddy
Likely cause: insufficient contrast, too many intermediate tones or a viewing distance that is too close for the chosen scale. Fix: simplify the tonal range, strengthen light-dark separation and review a correctly scaled CAD proof.
Important details disappear
Likely cause: the finished image is too small or the detail is finer than the manufacturable pattern. Fix: enlarge the image, remove secondary detail and identify the essential features before the drawing is finalised.
The image changes after installation
Likely cause: the approved proof showed a different background or lighting condition. Fix: request context visualisations, verify backing materials and inspect the panel from the real approach paths.

Panels do not align into one mural
Likely cause: joints, folds, tolerances or support movement were not incorporated into the artwork layout. Fix: design the full multi-panel elevation as one CAD composition and mark seam and fixing zones before punching.
A decorative panel cannot meet the functional brief
Likely cause: privacy, airflow, solar or compliance requirements were added after the image was approved. Fix: establish measurable requirements at the start and have the relevant consultant check the proposed assembly.
What is not established by the published PixelPerf information
No public, independent PixelPerf test data was identified for a standard energy reduction, acoustic performance, fire classification, structural capacity, corrosion life, warranty or price range. “100% accurate” reproduction is a supplier marketing claim, not an independently validated engineering result. Treat every capability as subject to the approved drawing, selected material and actual site conditions.

A practical PixelPerf project checklist
- Define whether the panel is artwork, a screen, a façade element or a combination.
- Supply the highest-resolution original image available and identify the non-negotiable visual features.
- Record viewing distances, sightlines, lighting and the background behind the panel.
- Set measurable privacy, ventilation, shading, signage or approval requirements before image treatment.
- Review the CAD drawing at full panel scale, including seams, folds, returns and fixing zones.
- Approve metal, thickness, colour, coating and maintenance requirements for the exposure.
- Coordinate structural support, movement, drainage, lifting and installation tolerances.
- Obtain project-specific confirmation for code compliance, fire, wind, corrosion and any claimed environmental performance.
