Place in My Heart Coasters is a four-coaster quilting project from AllPeopleQuilt. Each coaster finishes at 5½ inches square and contains a 3-inch finished heart block. The pattern combines assorted white and red prints, pieced heart units, batting, quilting, and binding; its measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances.

Materials and quantities

The cutting list also includes 1¼-inch and 2-inch squares, 1½-inch border rectangles, and 2-by-3½-inch rectangles. Because the prints are assigned to particular heart and border units, use the original AllPeopleQuilt project instructions and diagrams for the exact allocation of each cut rather than assuming all eight prints are used identically.
How the heart blocks are assembled
1. Mark and sew the small units
Mark diagonal lines on the specified small squares. Place them on the matching rectangles, right sides together, and sew as directed. The pattern tells you to sew right sides together unless another instruction says otherwise.

2. Trim and press
Trim the seam allowances as directed, then press the resulting fabric triangles. Accurate trimming and pressing are important because the heart block is only 3 inches finished.
3. Join mirror-image halves
Join the half units into heart blocks, keeping the mirror-image arrangement intact. Repeat the construction with the red and white fabrics reversed so the four blocks have the intended contrast.

4. Add the borders
Sew the matching rectangles around the pieced heart blocks to create four coaster tops. Check that the heart is centered before adding each border.
Layer, quilt, and bind the coasters
- Layer each coaster: place a coaster top with a 9-inch batting square and a 9-inch backing square.
- Baste: secure the three layers using your preferred basting method.
- Quilt: quilt each layered square as desired. The project page identifies tester Martha Gamm’s quilting as diagonal lines in both directions, spaced ½ inch apart.
- Trim: bring the quilted unit to the specified finished size, taking care not to cut into the border or heart.
- Bind: use the 2½-by-30-inch binding strips to finish the edges of each coaster.
All dimensions in the pattern include ¼-inch seam allowances. Maintain that seam consistently during piecing so the heart blocks and borders finish at the stated sizes.

Fabric planning for a coordinated set
Use color roles rather than identical prints
The supported design choice is contrast between assorted white prints and assorted red prints. Varying the prints within each color group gives the four coasters a scrappy Valentine’s Day appearance while preserving the pattern’s color structure.
Check scale before cutting
The heart units use small squares and rectangles, so large motifs may disappear in the finished block. Small-scale prints, tone-on-tone textures, and clear value contrast make the pieced heart easier to read.
