Yes, a plastic pot can be modified to drain—but the right approach depends on the container and the size of opening you need. For ordinary seedlings and houseplants, the most dependable option is a pot manufactured with drainage holes. The University of Connecticut gives 3- or 4-inch pots and recycled plastic cups with holes in the bottom as examples for seedlings. If you are adapting a large plastic tote lid for a hose, grommet or other fitting, a documented hole-saw procedure is appropriate for that larger opening. It should not be treated as a universal recipe for making small holes in nursery pots.
The “shared 25,000 times” claim in the headline could not be verified, and no original post establishing one particular viral cutting trick was located. What can be established is why drainage matters, where container modification makes sense, and when buying a pot with holes avoids unnecessary risk.

Why drainage holes matter
Water that cannot leave a container collects around the root zone. Roots need moisture, but they also need air spaces in the growing medium. A container with an opening at the bottom allows excess water to escape after irrigation, reducing the chance that the medium remains saturated for long periods.
The University of Connecticut Home & Garden Education Center describes seedlings being moved into 3- or 4-inch pots, or into recycled plastic cups, with holes in the bottom. That example is practical rather than prescriptive: the article does not specify a universal hole diameter or explain how to cut the openings. Its point is that a container for young plants normally needs a route for surplus water to leave. See the UConn Home & Garden Education Center articles (content including May 25, 2025).

A hole is not an automatic requirement for every plant in every situation. An excerpt from Plant Parenting: Easy Ways to Make More Houseplants, Vegetables, and Flowers notes that some plants can be grown in solid containers when watering is carefully controlled, while many types can suffer in containers without a hole. In other words, drainage is a match between plant, medium, container and watering habits—not a rule detached from all context. Read the relevant discussion in the book excerpt.

Small openings for ordinary plant drainage
Nursery pots, seedling cups and many houseplant containers use relatively small openings distributed across the base. Their job is to let water out while retaining enough medium for the root ball. There is no evidence for one universal cutting pattern that works across every plastic thickness, shape or plant.
A large opening for a tote-lid fitting
A tote lid used in a project may need one large, accurately positioned opening for a fitting. That is a different task from drainage. The documented example from pHenohunter.org concerns large openings in plastic tote lids and uses a hole saw. The author’s dimensions and layout are specific to that build, so transfer the method only after checking that your lid, fitting and hole-saw size are compatible.

No modification at all
A pot sold with drainage holes removes uncertainty about the base design and saves time. It is the clearest choice when you are planting seedlings or a houseplant rather than building a tote-and-fitting system.
Options compared
| Approach | Best fit | What is documented | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use a ready-made pot with holes | Seedlings, houseplants and routine container growing | UConn gives 3- or 4-inch pots and recycled cups with bottom holes as seedling examples. | You must select a suitable pot; the source does not establish one ideal hole pattern for every plant. |
| Modify a plastic nursery pot | Only when a suitable container is unavailable and the plant’s drainage needs justify the change | General need for bottom drainage is supported, but the UConn article does not provide cutting instructions. | Plastic thickness, cracking, burrs and an unsuitable opening pattern can all create problems. |
| Use a hole saw on a tote lid | One or more large openings for fittings in a project tote | A March 23, 2020 pHenohunter.org project account describes a guide hole, pilot-bit alignment, pattern check and an initial reverse cut. | It is a first-person project account, not independent testing, and is not a small-pot drainage recipe. |
| Heat an ice pick | Historical reference only | A March 1, 1984 newspaper column mentioned a hot ice pick for holes in the lower third of foam or plastic pots for African violets. | The item does not establish current tool safety or modern best practice. |
If you are considering holes in a small plastic pot
Start by asking whether modification is necessary. If a pot with a factory-made drainage base is available in the required size, that option has the strongest direct support for routine planting. Modification becomes a fallback, not a default.
- Identify the plant and watering pattern. Plants that are damaged by persistently wet media need a reliable escape path for excess water. If you already know the plant tolerates a solid container and can control watering precisely, a hole may not be essential; the book excerpt cited above makes that distinction.
- Inspect the container. Check the plastic for brittleness, thin spots, seams and existing cracks. A reused cup that flexes or has become sun-damaged may fail when handled, even before planting.
- Plan the lowest drainage area. Water must be able to reach the openings when the container is sitting level. Avoid placing every opening in a raised ridge or a section that will be blocked by the surface beneath it.
- Use a method intended for that plastic. The available sources do not validate one universal drill, punch or heated-tool procedure for small pots. Follow the tool maker’s instructions, secure the container without crushing it, and wear appropriate eye protection when cutting plastic.
- Remove sharp fragments. Inspect the inside and outside of the base. Loose chips or sharp burrs can tear roots, snag fabric or cut fingers during planting. Remove fragments before adding growing medium.
- Test the result before planting. Add a small amount of water and confirm that it can leave the container. If the opening is obstructed, enlarge or reposition the design only if the container remains structurally sound; otherwise replace it.
These steps are a risk-control checklist, not a claim that one hole count or diameter is correct for every pot. The evidence supports the need for drainage in many cases, but it does not supply a tested specification for cutting small holes into arbitrary plastic.

The documented hole-saw method is for large tote-lid openings
The clearest procedural account in the available material concerns a plastic tote lid, not a seedling pot. In a March 23, 2020 forum post titled “Cutting Holes in Plastic Totes (Measuring Shortcuts),” the author describes a sequence for making a large opening that matches a fitting.
- Mark the opening and make a small guide hole. The guide establishes the center for the hole saw and helps keep the cut where the planned pattern requires it.
- Seat the hole saw’s pilot bit. The pilot bit fits into the guide hole so the saw can be aligned before the larger teeth contact the lid.
- Check the pattern before committing to the cut. Confirm the location against the tote, fitting and any neighboring openings. A misplaced large hole can make the lid unusable for its intended assembly.
- Begin in reverse if appropriate for the material and tool. The post’s author says starting the drill in reverse can reduce slipping and burrs. This is the author’s project advice, not an independently tested or official safety recommendation; use only a direction and speed permitted by your drill and hole-saw instructions.
- Cut through the lid and remove the excess carefully. Support the work so the lid does not flex unpredictably. Handle the cut-out and the newly exposed edge cautiously.
Read the complete account at pHenohunter.org. Its materials, dimensions and fitting arrangement belong to that project. Do not substitute the procedure for a general nursery-pot technique, and do not assume the reported result represents a laboratory test.
Why the hot-ice-pick tip should remain historical
A March 1, 1984 “Society” column in The Santa Anna News mentioned using a hot ice pick to add holes in the lower third of foam or plastic pots for African violets. That establishes that the suggestion appeared in a newspaper decades ago; it does not establish how the tool was heated, what ventilation or burn precautions were used, or whether the practice meets current safety expectations.

For that reason, treat the passage as historical context rather than a recommendation. Heating plastic can introduce burns, fumes, uncontrolled melting and irregular edges. Anyone considering a heated tool should first consult current manufacturer and workplace-safety guidance, and should choose a ready-made container instead when the project does not require modification. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying a pot with holes is often the better solution
For standard planting, a manufactured container with drainage holes avoids cutting errors, sharp edges and uncertainty about whether the base will crack. The UConn example specifically supports using 3- or 4-inch pots or recycled cups with bottom holes for seedlings. When shopping, match the pot’s volume to the plant and make sure the holes are open rather than sealed by a manufacturing film or debris.
A simple search phrase such as “plastic plant pots with drainage holes” describes the category without implying that one seller, size or brand is right for every plant. Availability, dimensions and prices vary by retailer and location; no single product or price is established here.

Drainage troubleshooting after planting
Water remains on the surface
First confirm that the container actually has an unobstructed opening and that the growing medium is not sealing it. A saucer, tray or shelf can also block the outlet if the pot is sitting in standing water. Empty collected water rather than leaving the base submerged.
The pot leaks soil with every watering
Large or poorly positioned openings can allow medium to escape. The fix is to change the container or use a suitable barrier that does not seal the outlet completely. Do not compensate by watering less if the plant still needs a dependable drainage path.
The plastic cracks around a cut
Stop using the container if the crack threatens the rim or base. Stress from lifting a wet pot can spread a small fracture. Transplant into an intact pot with an appropriate drainage design rather than relying on a damaged container.
The plant stays wet despite holes
Drainage holes cannot correct every watering problem. A dense or water-retentive medium, a pot that is too large, low light or frequent irrigation can keep roots wet even when water can leave. Review the entire watering routine and the plant’s tolerance for moisture instead of adding random openings.
The plant dries too quickly
More drainage is not automatically better. A small container, very open medium, warm conditions or frequent airflow can increase drying. Adjust the growing setup and watering schedule to the plant rather than sealing the holes without understanding the cause.

Safety and cleanup checklist
- Read the instructions for the drill, hole saw or other cutting tool before use.
- Wear eye protection and keep hands away from the cutting path.
- Work in a stable, well-ventilated area and keep children and pets away.
- Inspect plastic for brittle, sun-damaged sections before cutting.
- Collect chips and burrs so they cannot remain in the potting medium or work area.
- Discard a container that becomes structurally weak, sharply edged or cracked.
The practical verdict is straightforward: use a pot manufactured with drainage holes for ordinary planting whenever possible. Modify plastic only for a clearly defined need, and reserve the documented hole-saw sequence for large tote-lid openings that must accept a fitting. The historical hot-ice-pick note is evidence of an old suggestion, not proof of a safe modern technique.
