Plum Noir is not one universal wall-paint formula. The name describes a family of very dark plum shades, and different makers use it for different points between cool purple, red wine and brown-black. Pinterest’s 2026 palette assigns Plum Noir the value #351E28, while Prateek Paints lists its own Plum Noir as #2E1438. Those values are visibly different, so a color name alone cannot establish a cross-brand match.

For alternatives, start with the direction you want: the secondary Muro guide suggests Benjamin Moore Black Raspberry 2072-20, Chambourd AF-645 and Farrow & Ball Plummy; Prateek’s own nearby palette includes Royal Plum, Velvet Violet, Deep Orchid, Midnight Mauve, Dark Lavender and Wine Red. Treat all of these as comparison points, not guaranteed formulas. Order or mix a physical sample from the manufacturer you intend to use, then judge it on the actual wall in changing light.

What “Plum Noir” means in paint
“Plum Noir” sounds like a precise specification, but paint names are created independently by each manufacturer. In the sources available for this color, the same name points to at least two different digital values:
| Source and context | Published value | What the description suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Pinterest 2026 palette | #351E28 |
A deep shade combining burnt-burgundy notes with velvet-brown influence. |
| Prateek Paints online palette | #2E1438 |
A darker, more violet-leaning plum in that manufacturer’s range. |
A screen value is only a reference. Real paint changes with sheen, substrate, application thickness and lighting, and a printed or displayed color chip cannot reproduce every one of those variables. James Alexander Specialty Paints also sells an interior product called Plum Noir, but its indexed product page does not publish a hex value. Its description calls the paint a saturated purple with cool undertones, which puts it in a different visual direction from a warmer burgundy-brown interpretation.
That is why “closest” should mean closest for your room and your intended mood, not closest by name. A dark plum can read almost black in a north-facing room, distinctly purple in bright daylight or wine-red beside warm wood. Compare actual samples rather than assuming that two products with Plum Noir on the label will match.
Two useful Plum Noir reference points
The Pinterest and Prateek values are useful anchors when you are discussing the color with a designer or paint counter, but they are not interchangeable formulas. The first step is deciding which visual family you want to follow.
Burnt burgundy and velvet brown
Pinterest describes its 2026 shade as “Deep and decadent, this shade of rich, deep purple mixes notes of burnt burgundy with a swirl of velvet brown.” This version sits close to wine, aubergine and brown-black. It can feel enveloping in a dining room, study or bedroom, especially where warm timber, brass or cream upholstery already exists.

Saturated cool purple
James Alexander’s description points toward a saturated purple with cool undertones. A cool plum can look clearer and more violet in daylight and can sit comfortably with blue-gray, crisp white or cool stone finishes. In a low-light room it may lose some visible color and appear nearly black.
Deep violet
Prateek’s #2E1438 reference is another reminder that “plum” can move toward violet. If you want the purple to remain apparent after the paint is on the wall, compare this type of sample with the warmer burgundy-brown options under both daylight and evening lamps.

Named alternatives and close comparisons
The following colors are useful starting points, but the available comparisons do not establish exact cross-brand matches. Different binders, bases and sheen levels can make two similarly named shades look unrelated once applied.
Black Raspberry 2072-20
The Muro guide names Benjamin Moore Black Raspberry 2072-20 as a close paint comparison. The name suggests a red-fruit direction within the dark-plum family. Sample it beside your chosen Plum Noir reference if you want a warmer, more berry-like result rather than a blue-violet wall.
Chambourd AF-645
Muro also lists Chambourd AF-645. Use it as another dark, wine-leaning comparison, not as a verified conversion of either #351E28 or #2E1438. The guide is a secondary source, and its suggestion should be checked against the manufacturer’s current chip or sample.

Plummy
Farrow & Ball Plummy is the third comparison named by Muro. It gives you a branded plum option to test against the two darker reference directions. Keep the sample in the room for a full day before deciding; a color that looks richly purple in a showroom can appear brown, gray or nearly black at home.
Prateek’s nearby palette
Prateek Paints lists Royal Plum, Velvet Violet, Deep Orchid, Midnight Mauve, Dark Lavender and Wine Red alongside its own Plum Noir. These names are useful for narrowing hue and mood:
- Royal Plum: a natural comparison when you want to stay in the classic plum family.
- Velvet Violet: points toward a more visibly violet interpretation.
- Deep Orchid: suggests a stronger, more saturated purple direction.
- Midnight Mauve: offers a muted, duskier route within the dark-purple family.
- Dark Lavender: is the lavender-leaning option, though its appearance still needs an in-room sample.
- Wine Red: shifts the choice toward red and burgundy rather than blue-violet.
Prateek is an India-focused paint maker, so do not assume that these exact products are stocked in every country. Ask the local manufacturer or retailer for a current physical card and confirm the product line and sheen before ordering.
How to compare alternatives without chasing a false match
Put every candidate on the same three axes. This makes a long list of names easier to reduce to two or three samples.
| Axis | Question to ask | What to observe on the wall |
|---|---|---|
| Hue | Does it lean cool violet, red wine, burnt burgundy or brown? | Look at the sample beside white trim and warm wood; the undertone becomes easier to see at the edges. |
| Darkness | Is it near-black, or does it remain visibly purple? | Check the same sample in direct daylight, shade and artificial light. Very dark colors can lose chroma in shadow. |
| Product context | Is this a wall paint, a palette color or a coating reference? | Use wall-paint samples for a wall decision. Do not treat a digital trend swatch or industrial coating as a ready-to-buy interior formula. |
Do not rank the alternatives as exact matches when the published information does not provide a common color standard or independent side-by-side test. The practical goal is a shade that produces the desired hue and depth in your own room.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
Sample the actual paint: a reliable process
Sampling is the most important step because the evidence for these names is not a shared formula. Use this sequence before buying enough paint for the project.
- Choose two or three candidates. Select one warmer wine or burgundy option, one cool violet option and, if needed, one near-black plum. Too many swatches at once make small differences difficult to see.
- Confirm the exact product. Record the manufacturer, product line, sheen and color name. A color name may be reused in different ranges, and a digital palette value is not a can of paint.
- Buy a physical sample. James Alexander lists a 4 oz sample jar for its Plum Noir Thrive Natural Interior Paint. Other makers may use different sample sizes or formats. Availability and pricing can change, so verify the current listing before purchase.
- Prepare the test area. Clean a section of wall and let it dry. If the existing wall is strongly colored, prime or use a large white sample board so the old color does not bias your judgment.
- Apply a generous patch. Brush or roll an area large enough to read from across the room, following the product’s application instructions. A tiny dab hides undertones and makes dark shades seem more similar than they are.
- Place samples near decisions. Test beside trim, flooring, cabinets, upholstery and the largest permanent furnishings. A plum that works against a white card may clash with yellowed cream or red-toned timber.
- Watch the patch through a full light cycle. Inspect it in morning daylight, midday light, overcast conditions and the evening lamps you actually use. Note when it looks purple, wine, brown or black.
- Leave the samples in place. Live with them for at least a day before choosing. Dark colors can feel dramatically different after your eyes adjust and after the room is lit normally.
- Buy the final paint only after the comparison. Keep the label and batch information. If you need more than one can, ask the retailer whether the cans should be boxed together or mixed to minimize batch variation.
Coverage, sample size and quantity planning
James Alexander’s Plum Noir Thrive Natural Interior Paint page states an average coverage of 360 square feet per gallon. That is the manufacturer’s figure, not an independent test, and actual coverage varies with surface porosity, texture, color underneath, application method and the number of coats. Use the figure as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee.
The same product is listed with a 4 oz sample jar. That small container is intended for evaluating the color, not for calculating a full-room quantity. Measure the wall area, subtract large openings if appropriate, and follow the chosen manufacturer’s stated spread rate and coat guidance for the final order. Dark color over a light or strongly contrasting wall may require more preparation or coats than a similar color over a compatible base.

These are design decisions rather than universal color rules, but they help you choose the right sample set.
For a warm, cocooning room
Begin with the Pinterest-style burnt-burgundy and velvet-brown direction, or test Wine Red and Black Raspberry as warmer comparisons. Check the sample against the room’s wood, leather, brass and warm-white lighting. If the wall becomes too red or brown at night, move back toward a cooler violet candidate.

For a clearly purple room
Start with the cool saturated-purple direction described by James Alexander, then compare Velvet Violet, Deep Orchid or the Prateek #2E1438 reference where available. Use a large sample: highly saturated purple can look much stronger when it covers an entire wall than it does on a small chip.
For a restrained near-black accent
Choose the darkest candidate only after testing it in the room’s least favorable light. A deep plum that looks luxurious in daylight may read black in a hallway or north-facing corner. Check whether you still see the purple or wine note from the room’s normal viewing distance.
For a muted, softer result
Midnight Mauve and Dark Lavender are useful Prateek comparison directions. They may suit a room where full-strength wine or violet feels too intense, but rely on the physical swatch to determine whether the result is actually muted in your lighting.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming the name is a standard. The two published values,
#351E28and#2E1438, prove that the label does not identify one universal color. - Choosing from a phone or monitor. Displays vary by calibration and brightness. Use the screen only to shortlist candidates.
- Comparing different sheens. A higher-sheen surface reflects more light and can make a dark color appear different from a flat or low-sheen sample. Compare like with like where possible.
- Testing a tiny spot. Small marks do not show how the undertone behaves across a wall. Use a broad patch or a movable sample board.
- Ignoring the existing wall. Strong yellow, red or blue underneath can influence the first coat. Prepare the surface consistently before judging the final color.
- Buying by a secondary guide alone. Muro’s Black Raspberry 2072-20, Chambourd AF-645 and Plummy are suggested comparisons, not independently verified conversions.
- Confusing a coating color with interior paint. TIGER’s Plum Noir page concerns a powder-coating trend color. Powder coating is an industrial finish, not a ready-to-roll wall paint, so it should not be used as a wall-paint specification.
- Ordering before checking availability. Product ranges, sample sizes and stock change. Confirm the current manufacturer, market, finish and size at the time of purchase.
What the current trend data does—and does not—tell you
Pinterest’s 2026 palette page reports rising interest in the broader dark-plum family. Its global English-language search analysis compares September 2024–August 2025 with September 2023–August 2024 and reports increases of 220% for “dark plum” searches, 60% for “plum living room ideas” and 40% for “dark purple shades.” Those figures describe search behavior, not paint sales or a guarantee that a particular shade will suit your home.
The page also reports increases of 335%, 240% and 480% in color-related saves across its stated August 2023–July 2025 analysis windows, but the published material does not clearly map each percentage to a named color. They should not be presented as Plum Noir-specific results.
Pinterest’s line “Plum Noir is for the plot” is publisher-written palette language, not a quotation from a named designer. Use the trend as inspiration, then make the decision from the sample in your own light.
A practical decision framework
- Set the mood first. Choose warm wine, cool violet, brown-black or muted mauve before comparing brand names.
- Pick a primary reference. Use Pinterest’s
#351E28if you want the burgundy-brown direction, or Prateek’s#2E1438if you want a more violet reference. Treat both as visual anchors, not formulas. - Add one or two named comparisons. Muro’s Black Raspberry 2072-20, Chambourd AF-645 and Plummy, or Prateek’s Royal Plum, Velvet Violet, Deep Orchid, Midnight Mauve, Dark Lavender and Wine Red, can help you move warmer, cooler, brighter or softer.
- Test in context. Apply physical samples beside the room’s fixed finishes and observe them throughout the day.
- Confirm the product details. Check market, finish, sample availability, coverage guidance and current stock with the intended manufacturer.
- Commit only when the undertone works at night. Evening lighting is often where a near-black plum reveals whether it is truly purple, wine or brown enough for the room.
The safest Plum Noir alternative is therefore not a single universally correct code. It is the manufacturer’s physical sample that matches your preferred hue, darkness and room lighting after an in-place test.
