Plum Noir vs. Burgundy: What’s the Difference in Decorating?

Plum Noir and burgundy overlap, but Plum Noir generally reads purple-first while burgundy reads red-first. Learn how undertones, lighting, room size and surrounding colors change the result—and how to test samples before painting.

Plum Noir is purple-first; burgundy is usually red-first. Plum Noir’s dark, purple-led character can include burnt-burgundy and brown notes, while burgundy generally reads as a deep wine red with brown, purple or sometimes blue undertones. The names overlap across paint ranges, so the exact formula, room lighting and surrounding colors matter more than the label.

For walls, compare real samples in the room where they will be used. A screen image or color name cannot show reliably how a deep shade will react to daylight, artificial light, flooring, trim and furnishings.

The short answer: purple-first versus red-first

When people ask about plum versus burgundy, the most useful distinction is the direction of the hue:

  • Plum Noir/plum: usually begins with a deep purple impression. It may shift toward indigo, red or brown depending on the formula.
  • Burgundy: usually begins with a deep red, wine-like impression. Brown, purple and blue undertones are all possible.

That distinction is a decorating guide, not a universal technical standard. Paint companies use “plum” and “burgundy” as broad color families, and two shades with the same name can look noticeably different. Compare the specific paint chip or sample, then judge it in the intended room.

What Plum Noir means in decorating

It is a named palette shade, not a universal paint specification

Pinterest’s 2026 Palette lists Plum Noir as a rich, deep purple and says the color can span a spectrum. Its published digital values are Hex #351E28, RGB 53, 30, 40, and CMYK 0, 43, 25, 79. Those numbers identify the palette color in digital formats; they do not guarantee that every paint labeled Plum Noir will match a wall under every light source. See the official palette details at Pinterest’s 2026 Palette PDF.

Pinterest describes the shade as “deep and decadent,” combining rich purple with notes of burnt burgundy and velvet brown. In a room, that combination can make Plum Noir feel less like a bright violet and more like a dark, enveloping neutral with a purple bias.

How paint makers describe plum

PPG’s Plum Shade is described as “a deep, shaded, monarch purple with an indigo undertone.” That example shows why a plum wall can appear cooler or bluer than a burgundy wall even when both are equally dark. PPG suggests the shade for a dining room or a bedroom accent wall and shows it with dusty pinks and creamy tans. The description and swatch option are on the PPG Plum Shade color page.

Other plum formulas may pull warmer, with more red or brown. Treat PPG’s indigo description as an example of one plum direction rather than a rule for every product in the category.

What burgundy means in decorating

A red-led family with several undertone directions

Benjamin Moore describes New London Burgundy HC-61 as “a distinguished deep red with brown undertones.” That is the classic burgundy impression: wine-red depth softened by brown rather than driven by pure purple. The exact color is shown on the New London Burgundy HC-61 page.

Burgundy is not limited to warm brown-reds. Benjamin Moore’s broader burgundy color collection demonstrates warmer and cooler directions, including shades that can show purple or blue notes. A cool burgundy may sit closer to plum; a warm burgundy may look closer to oxblood, brick or red wine.

That overlap explains why a color can be called burgundy by one range and plum by another. The undertone of the individual shade is the deciding information for a decorating scheme.

Plum Noir and burgundy compared

Comparison Plum Noir or plum Burgundy
First visual impression Purple-forward, deep and dramatic; Plum Noir’s palette description adds burnt-burgundy and velvet-brown notes. Red-forward and wine-like, often deep and warm, with possible brown or purple notes.
Typical undertones May lean indigo, red or brown. PPG’s Plum Shade is indigo-undertoned. May lean brown, purple or blue. New London Burgundy is described as red with brown undertones.
Common decorating role Moody full walls, a dining room, or a bedroom accent wall when the room can support a dark color. Rich focal walls, built-ins, furniture or textiles that create an intimate, substantial feel.
Helpful balancing colors Dusty pinks, creamy tans, light neutrals and white can clarify the purple depth. Lighter nearby surfaces can prevent the room from becoming visually heavy; the best warm or cool partner depends on the burgundy’s undertone.
Most reliable selection method Test a physical sample in the actual room and its lighting. Use the same sample-based process; the name alone is not enough.

These are broad comparisons across the cited paint-maker examples, not fixed rules for every brand or collection. Benjamin Moore also maintains a separate plum color collection, which illustrates how many directions can exist inside the word “plum.”

Which is more purple?

Plum Noir is generally the more purple-looking choice because purple is its starting point. A strongly indigo plum will look cooler and bluer beside warm cream or tan. A redder plum may move toward burgundy, especially in warm evening light.

Burgundy is generally more red-looking, but a cool burgundy with purple or blue undertones can approach plum. Put the two samples next to one another rather than judging them separately: the red bias of burgundy and the purple bias of plum become easier to see through direct comparison.

How the colors look on walls

Daylight

North-facing or otherwise cool daylight can emphasize the blue or indigo component of a plum or cool burgundy. Warm, low-angle daylight can bring out red and brown, making either color feel richer and less blue. The same sample can therefore appear more purple in one room and more wine-red in another.

Artificial light

Warm bulbs tend to make red and brown notes more apparent. Cooler lamps can preserve a blue or indigo cast. If a room uses several lamp types, check the sample under each one instead of relying on a single daytime observation.

Surrounding finishes

White trim creates a sharp value contrast and can make a dark shade look more saturated. Cream, beige and wood tones soften the transition and can pull out brown or red notes. Gray or blue-gray surroundings may make an indigo plum or cool burgundy read cooler. These effects are why a digital hex value cannot predict the final wall appearance.

Choosing between them by room

Dining rooms

A deep shade can support the intimate, evening-oriented mood many dining rooms already have. PPG specifically names its Plum Shade for dining rooms. Plum Noir works when you want a purple-led, enveloping backdrop; a red-led burgundy creates a more wine-cellar or traditional impression. Keep the ceiling, trim and major furniture light enough that the dark walls remain intentional rather than oppressive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bedrooms

Plum Noir can create a cocooning accent wall behind a bed, especially when paired with dusty pink, cream or soft tan. A burgundy accent can feel warmer and more traditional. Test the color beside bedding, curtains and flooring, because those large surfaces can shift the perceived undertone more than a small chip suggests.

Living rooms and studies

Use the room’s existing palette to choose the direction. Purple-leaning Plum Noir suits schemes that already contain mauve, dusty rose, indigo or warm neutrals. Burgundy suits leather, walnut, terracotta or other red-brown elements when the specific shade shares those undertones. If the furniture is already visually heavy, a single accent wall may be more balanced than four dark walls.

Small or low-light rooms

Deep colors absorb visual light and can make a small room feel closer. Nerolac’s guidance for deep shades emphasizes lighter surrounding surfaces and good lighting to balance the depth. Its Deep Plum and Burgundy pages show those shades in a broader decorating context. Use a lighter ceiling, reflective or pale furnishings, and layered lighting if you want the dark color without losing definition.

Pairing palettes for Plum Noir

Dusty pink and blush

PPG recommends dusty pinks with its Plum Shade. Muted pink repeats the red component without competing with the purple depth, producing a softer, layered scheme than bright pink would.

Creamy tan and warm neutrals

Creamy tans provide value contrast while preserving warmth. They are useful when Plum Noir feels too cold beside stark white, or when you want the room to connect with wood, natural fibers or beige upholstery.

White and pale neutrals

White trim or pale neutral furniture makes the dark wall legible and gives the eye a visual rest. Compare the white in your room with the sample: a very cool white can emphasize indigo, while a warm white can bring forward brown and red notes.

Pairing palettes for burgundy

Light surfaces for balance

Lighter walls, ceilings, upholstery or rugs keep a burgundy focal area from dominating. The best light neutral depends on the undertone: warm burgundy often sits comfortably with cream and tan, while a cooler burgundy may need a cleaner white or a gray with a compatible temperature.

Warm materials

Brown-undertoned burgundy can connect naturally with walnut, leather, brass and other warm materials. Confirm the relationship with a sample; a purple or blue-leaning burgundy may look disconnected from strongly orange woods.

Cool companions

A cool burgundy can work with navy, blue-gray or muted purple when the values are controlled. Keep at least one lighter element in the composition so several dark colors do not merge into one indistinct mass.

How to compare paint samples correctly

  1. Choose named samples, not just digital swatches. Get a Plum Noir or plum sample and a burgundy sample from the exact paint ranges you are considering. A free swatch is available through the PPG Plum Shade page, while Benjamin Moore cautions that screen and printed representations can differ from actual paint.
  2. Place each sample in the room. Put large sample boards or swatches beside trim, flooring, countertops and the main furniture. A color that looks balanced in isolation may clash with a fixed finish.
  3. Check multiple walls. Look at the samples on the wall that receives the most daylight, the wall in shadow and the wall seen from the room entrance. This reveals whether the shade changes from purple to red or from warm to cool.
  4. Observe the room at different times. Check morning, midday, evening and the artificial lighting used after dark. Record which undertone is most visible rather than deciding from one glance.
  5. Compare the two samples side by side. Ask which one looks more purple, which one looks more red, and whether either becomes unexpectedly brown or blue against your finishes.
  6. Evaluate the whole palette. Hold fabric, rug or art samples next to the paint. Choose the color whose undertone supports the largest, least-changeable elements in the room.
  7. Decide only after the sample has dried as directed. Wet paint can look different from the finished surface. Follow the product label for application and drying instructions.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by the name

“Plum” does not guarantee a cool purple, and “burgundy” does not guarantee a warm red. Correct this by reading the maker’s undertone description and checking the actual chip.

Trusting a phone or monitor

Display settings, room light and the device itself change perceived color. Benjamin Moore explicitly warns that on-screen and printed representations may vary from actual paint. Use a physical sample for the final decision.

Ignoring the room’s fixed colors

Flooring, stone, cabinetry and upholstery can reflect into a dark wall and alter its apparent temperature. Place the sample beside those materials before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using several equally dark colors

Plum Noir or burgundy can be a focal color, but pairing it with multiple dark walls, dark furniture and a dark ceiling may erase visual boundaries. Add lighter surfaces or reserve the deepest shade for one wall, built-in or major furnishing.

Treating trend data as proof of performance

Search and save activity can show interest in a color family, but it cannot tell you how a particular paint will look in your room or predict sales.

What the current trend data says about dark plum

Pinterest’s 2026 palette materials report rising interest in dark purple themes. In global English-language searches during September 2023–August 2025, “dark plum” searches increased 220%, “plum living room ideas” increased 60%, and “dark purple shades” increased 40%. Each comparison measures September 2024–August 2025 against September 2023–August 2024.

The same Pinterest report lists save increases of 335%, 240% and 480% for three color swatches during August 2023–July 2025, comparing August 2024–July 2025 with the prior year. Its table labels those results by swatch rather than by named search, so the percentages cannot be assigned to Plum Noir, burgundy or another specific query. These figures indicate platform interest, not a guarantee that a paint color will suit a room or a forecast of paint sales.

A practical decision guide

  • Choose Plum Noir or another purple-led plum when you want the wall to read distinctly purple, especially alongside dusty pink, cream, tan or other soft neutrals.
  • Choose burgundy when you want a redder, wine-like focal color that can connect with brown, leather, wood or traditional warm materials.
  • Choose a cool burgundy when you like burgundy’s red depth but need it to relate to blue-gray, navy or purple elements.
  • Choose a warmer plum when you like plum’s depth but want more red or brown and less indigo.
  • If the samples look nearly identical, select by undertone compatibility with your fixed finishes, not by the label or trend status.

Final verdict

In decorating terms, Plum Noir is best understood as a deep purple family with possible burnt-burgundy and brown character; burgundy is a deep red family that may carry brown, purple or blue. Neither name is a universal paint standard. The reliable choice comes from comparing the exact samples in your room, under its real lighting, against its permanent colors.
