A Pongal pot is the vessel used to cook the rice dish Pongal during the Tamil harvest festival. Traditionally, sources describe clay and brass pots. Letting the pot’s contents boil over is part of the observance: the overflow symbolizes prosperity and abundance.
What is a Pongal pot used for?
It is used to prepare Pongal, a rice dish whose name is associated with boiling over. Pongal is also the name of the Tamil harvest festival. The Indian Heritage Centre describes the festival as a four-day observance celebrating thanks to the Sun, Mother Nature and farm animals, and marking the beginning of Thai. Its overview explains the overflow as a symbol of prosperity and abundance: Indian Heritage Centre: “What is Pongal?”.
On Surya Pongal, the central day for the cooking ritual in the cited descriptions, milk rice is allowed to boil freely. Family members may call out “Pongalo Pongal!” as it rises over the rim. The call and the overflow express hopes for good fortune and a good harvest; they are not simply signs that the pot is too full. The Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav description and Singapore National Heritage Board’s account describe this observance.

What is traditionally cooked in it?
The dish may be sweet or savory. The Indian Heritage Centre identifies sakkarai Pongal as the sweet version and venn Pongal as the savory one. Its list of common ingredients includes rice, raisins, cardamom, dal, ghee, milk, jaggery and cashew nuts. Ingredients vary by preparation; the list is not a requirement for every pot of Pongal. See “What’s in the Pot?”.
Clay or brass: which kind of pot should you choose?
Both clay and brass are documented traditional materials. The Indian Heritage Centre states, “Pongal is traditionally cooked in a clay pot or brass pot.” Government descriptions also specifically mention cooking in a clay pot. These sources establish traditional choices, not that one material is required in every home or suitable for every modern cooking surface.

| Material | What the sources establish | What to check on an individual pot |
|---|---|---|
| Clay | Traditional material; government descriptions mention clay-pot cooking for the ritual. | Whether the vessel is intended for cooking, its capacity, care instructions and compatibility with your heat source. |
| Brass | Identified as another traditional material by the Indian Heritage Centre. | Whether the specific vessel is intended for cooking, its capacity, care instructions and compatibility with your heat source. |
For either material, verify the maker’s directions and product details before using the pot. The heritage descriptions do not establish the food-contact status, stove compatibility or safety testing of any particular product.

The heritage and government accounts describe a significant festival observance, not a rule followed identically by every household. A contemporary example illustrates the distinction: Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that its Chennai mission prepared Pongal in a clay pot on 14 January 2026. That event report documents one celebration, rather than measuring how often households use clay or brass.
