Yes—you can turn a salvaged porch post or railing spindle into a candle-holder form by cutting it into sections, adding a stable wood base, and choosing either a measured opening for a taper candle or a small glass dish for a pillar candle. That idea is described in a House Digest project article, but the article does not publish cut lengths, drill diameters, joinery details, finish specifications, or a stability test. Treat the project as a customizable craft plan, not as a tested fire-safe product. Because the finished body is wood, a battery-operated flameless candle is the lowest-risk way to use the painted or stained piece.
What the porch-post project actually involves
A porch railing baluster (often called a spindle) already has turned or shaped sections that can look like a candlestick when shortened. The reported approach is straightforward: cut the salvaged piece into candle-holder sections, finish the wood with paint or stain, and attach each section to a square MDF block or a wood round. The article does not state the post diameter, section length, base dimensions, opening diameter, adhesive, fastener, or drying time. Those details must be established from the particular piece of reclaimed wood and the candle or dish you actually have.
Choose the top design before cutting

Also decide how much of the original profile you want to preserve. A turned spindle can be attractive as one tall holder, while a long baluster may yield several coordinated pieces. Do not choose a cut line until you have checked for cracks, rot, old nails, screws, and sections that are too narrow to support a base.

Inspect and prepare reclaimed porch wood
Check condition before bringing it indoors
- Reject pieces with soft or crumbling wood, active insect damage, deep structural cracks, or water-soaked areas.
- Remove every nail, screw, staple, bracket, and paint flake that could interfere with a saw, drill, or sanding block.
- Brush off dirt outdoors. If the piece has an unknown coating, avoid creating airborne dust until you know how it will be handled safely.
- Let damp wood dry fully in a ventilated, sheltered place before measuring or finishing. The project article does not specify a drying period, so use the moisture condition of the actual stock rather than a guessed schedule.
Look for a stable footprint
Stand the uncut piece on a flat surface and identify a section that can be cut squarely enough to meet an MDF block or wood round. A decorative profile is not a substitute for a level base. If the lower end is badly angled or hollowed by rot, cut back to sound wood or choose another segment.
Measure the candle, dish, and base
Measure before selecting a drill bit or cutting the post. The published project gives no universal dimensions, and porch spindles vary widely.

- Measure the outside diameter of the taper candle at the point that will enter the holder. Record the measurement rather than relying on the label.
- For a pillar design, measure the outside diameter and height of the glass dish, plus the diameter of the dish’s contact area.
- Place the salvaged section on a flat surface and mark the intended finished height. Leave enough solid wood above the base for a clean attachment.
- Set the post on the proposed MDF block or wood round and check that the base is visibly wider than the post. A narrow base can tip even when the joint is strong.
- Mark the center of the top face with a ruler and straightedge. On a turned profile, use the true center of the cut face, not the visual center of the ornament.
Use the measured candle diameter to select a bit and test the fit on a scrap of similar wood first. The opening should hold the candle upright without splitting the post; there is no single drill size that can be stated safely for every candle or spindle.
Cut the porch post into holder sections
Make a square, sound cut
Clamp the post securely and cut on a marked line with a saw appropriate to the stock. Keep hands clear of the blade and support the offcut so it cannot pinch the saw. After cutting, check the bottom with a straightedge. A small high spot can make the finished holder rock, so correct it with controlled sanding or a fresh cut rather than relying on adhesive to bridge a gap.

Sand without erasing the profile
Sand the cut faces and sharp edges until they are smooth to the touch. Preserve the turned details that make a spindle distinctive, but remove loose fibers and flaking old finish. Vacuum dust and wipe the piece with a clean, compatible cloth before painting or staining.
Build the drilled-opening version
- Transfer the center mark to the top face and secure the piece in a clamp or drilling fixture.
- Drill straight down, using the measured candle diameter and a depth that supports the candle without breaking through the bottom or weakening a narrow section.
- Stop and clear chips frequently. If the wood begins to split, stop; a smaller or more fragile section is not a safe place to force the bit.
- Test the unlit candle for vertical alignment and a firm, removable fit. Do not hammer a candle into a tight hole.
- Seal or finish the surrounding wood only after all drilling and sanding are complete.
This is a craft procedure for fit and appearance, not a fire rating. The reported design idea does not establish that a flame in a drilled wooden opening is safe, and neither USFA nor NFPA guidance approves this specific assembly.
Build the glass-dish version
- Choose a small, heat-resistant glass dish whose underside sits flat on the post. Confirm that the dish is not chipped or cracked.
- Center the dish on the top face and mark its footprint. If the top is irregular, create a level transition surface rather than allowing the dish to rock.
- Use an adhesive or mechanical attachment only if its instructions are compatible with the wood, glass, temperature, and intended indoor use. The project article does not name a product or test a joint.
- Allow the attachment to cure for the full time stated by that adhesive’s manufacturer before handling or placing anything in the dish.
- Check the dish from several angles. It should not wobble when the base is gently nudged.
The dish separates the candle from the top surface, but it does not make the wooden post noncombustible. Keep the complete assembly away from anything that can burn, or use a flameless candle.
Attach an MDF block or wood-round base
The described project uses 1-inch MDF blocks or wood rounds as bases, but it does not specify their width, shape, adhesive, or fasteners. Select a base broad enough for the holder’s height and weight, and verify that both mating surfaces are flat, clean, and dry.

- Center the cut post on the base and trace its footprint.
- Dry-fit the parts and check for rocking before applying anything.
- Apply a wood-compatible adhesive according to its label, or use a suitable fastener if the post and base thickness allow one without splitting.
- Clamp or weight the joint without shifting the center mark. Remove squeeze-out before it hardens.
- Do not use the holder until the adhesive has reached its stated cure time; an article about the design provides no tested curing schedule.
After curing, place the holder on the surface where it will live and perform a gentle stability check. If it tips under a light sideways touch, enlarge the base, shorten the holder, or reserve it for flameless use.
Paint or stain the finished holder
Complete structural work before applying color. Sand between compatible coats as directed by the product label, and let each coat dry or cure according to that product’s instructions. A painted surface can hide hairline cracks, so inspect the wood before priming and again after the first coat. Keep paint, stain, and solvent-soaked rags away from ignition sources and dispose of them according to local requirements.

Open-flame safety is separate from the craft design
Wood is combustible. Neither the reported project article nor the official guidance below says that a wooden post, a drilled wooden opening, or a wood-and-glass assembly has been tested or approved for burning candles.

- The National Fire Protection Association recommends sturdy candleholders that will not tip easily and at least 1 foot (30 centimeters) between a candle and anything that can burn.
- USFA reports an average of 20 home candle fires each day, attributing that figure to NFPA; the USFA page does not state a period for that daily average.
- NFPA estimates an annual average of 5,894 U.S. home structure fires whose heat source was candles in 2020–2024. In that same period, candles were the heat source for 2% of reported home fires, 2% of home fire deaths, 5% of home fire injuries, and 3% of direct property damage in home fires.
If you use a real candle despite the combustible construction, keep the entire holder on a level, nonflammable surface, maintain the one-foot clearance in every direction, keep it out of drafts and reach of children or pets, and extinguish it before leaving the room or going to bed. A flameless candle removes the open flame and is the safer recommendation for a painted-wood project.

The project article points to construction salvage yards and craft marketplaces as possible sources for porch spindles. Availability, dimensions, seller quality, and condition vary, so inspect any listing or in-person piece rather than assuming it matches a photograph. Search terms such as “wood porch baluster” may help locate the right category, but they do not verify a particular seller or product.
Bring your planned base width and candle or dish measurements when shopping. A spindle that looks substantial online may have a narrow waist, hidden damage, or a profile that leaves too little sound wood for drilling and attachment.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The candle wobbles
Do not compensate with paper, loose scraps, or an oversized flame guard. Recheck the measured diameter and alignment. If the opening is too large or the wood is splitting, convert the piece to flameless use or remake the top from sound stock.

The holder rocks
Check the cut face and base for high spots, then inspect the joint for gaps. A wider base or a shorter holder may be necessary; more adhesive alone does not correct an unstable footprint.
The glass dish shifts
Remove it and reassess the top surface, dish contact area, and adhesive cure. Do not use the assembly until the dish remains level under a gentle nudge.

Stop sanding, clean the surface, and identify whether the existing coating is sound and compatible with the new finish. Loose or unknown coatings should not be burned, heated, or aggressively disturbed indoors.
When this project makes sense
This reuse project works best when you have sound reclaimed wood, a clear plan for a broad stable base, and time to measure and finish each piece. The safest finished object is a decorative holder for a battery-operated candle. If the goal is a lit candle, treat the woodwork as an untested combustible surround, follow the one-foot clearance and supervision rules from USFA and NFPA, and do not assume that a glass dish or painted surface makes the design fire-safe.
