The three common portable gas-heater styles for outdoor spaces are mushroom or dome patio heaters, pyramid patio heaters, and tabletop heaters. A gas fire pit or fire table is a related choice for gathering around a flame, but it is not the same as a directional patio heater.
Choose among them by the space available, documented heat output, fuel-cylinder and regulator requirements, mobility, stability, and the safety clearances in the specific model’s manual. No shape is a universal winner for coverage, efficiency, or value. Every gas-burning outdoor heater must remain outside in a well-ventilated area; never use one indoors, in a tent, camper, vehicle, or another enclosed space.

Mushroom or dome patio heaters
A mushroom heater is the familiar tall patio unit with a broad reflector at the top. The burner sits below the dome, which directs radiant heat down and around the appliance. ELGAS identifies this as a common outdoor gas-heater style.
Its vertical form keeps the base footprint relatively compact compared with the height, making it practical beside seating, dining areas, or a circulation path on a terrace. The wide reflector is also a strong visual element: it can read as a focal object in an outdoor room, so allow for its scale when laying out furniture and lighting.

Do not infer a particular heating range from the mushroom shape alone. Output, fuel consumption, reflector design, and the manufacturer’s stated coverage vary by model. Check the rating and coverage information for the exact heater you are considering.
Pyramid patio heaters
A pyramid heater is a tall, tapered unit that displays its flame inside a vertical glass enclosure. The visible flame gives it a stronger architectural presence than a conventional dome heater, which can make it attractive where ambience matters as much as warmth.

Planika’s Pyramid is a documented example. That model is powered by LPG or propane and is specified for outdoor use only. Planika lists a thermocouple and tilt or fall sensors that shut off the gas on that product. Those are model-specific features, not evidence that every pyramid heater uses the same construction or shutoffs.
The glass column and tall profile require careful positioning. Keep the heater on stable, level ground, preserve the side and overhead clearances in its manual, and avoid locations where people could collide with it. A tall design can be more visually prominent and potentially more vulnerable to being knocked if it is placed in a busy walkway.
Tabletop patio heaters
Tabletop heaters are compact units intended to sit on a suitable table or other approved raised surface. They suit balconies, small patios, and dining arrangements where a full-size freestanding heater would consume too much floor area.

ELGAS notes that fuel arrangements for tabletop versions vary. Some models use a separate portable cylinder and hose; others use a connection specified by the manufacturer. Never assume that a cylinder, regulator, or connector from another heater will fit. Use only the fuel arrangement and components listed in the particular model’s manual.
The table itself becomes part of the safety system. It must be stable, level, able to support the heater, and positioned so the appliance cannot be tipped by a person, pet, wind, or a snagged hose. Confirm the manual’s required clearances above and around the unit before setting it beside an umbrella, canopy, wall, or combustible decoration.
How a gas fire pit differs
A gas fire pit or fire table is an adjacent category rather than a fourth patio-heater shape. ELGAS describes bowl and rectangular forms with a burner covered by media such as glass beads or stones. The design is centered on an open flame and group gathering, not on distributing radiant heat from a raised reflector.
Fire pits can define a seating circle or become the visual centerpiece of an outdoor room. They still require outdoor-only operation, stable placement, ventilation, and the exact clearances and fuel connections stated by the manufacturer. Do not present a fire table as equivalent to a directional patio heater when comparing how it warms people or how it fits a circulation plan.
What to compare instead of relying on appearance
Product shape tells you how an appliance looks and roughly how it occupies space, but it does not establish performance. Compare the specifications for the exact model and market.

| Decision factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint and placement | Freestanding or tabletop dimensions, approved surface, and exact side and overhead clearances in the manual | Determines whether the heater fits without crowding furniture, walls, coverings, or walkways |
| Heat information | Manufacturer-stated heat output and intended coverage, where provided | There is no reliable universal coverage ranking for mushroom, pyramid, and tabletop styles |
| Fuel and connection | Approved LPG or propane arrangement, cylinder type, regulator, hose, and connector for your local market | Incompatible components can create leaks or prevent correct operation |
| Mobility | Weight, wheels, stability requirements, and whether the unit must cool before movement | A heater should not be dragged or carried while operating or hot |
| Safety shutoffs | Flame-failure, tilt, or tip-over protection listed for that model | Features on one product cannot be assumed on another |
| Surface and surroundings | Level, stable ground; distance from combustibles, overhead coverings, exits, and foot traffic | Placement controls fire, tip-over, and carbon-monoxide risks |
The reviewed sources do not establish category-wide statistics or comparative laboratory tests. Treat a manufacturer’s output or coverage figure as a specification for that model, not a promise that every heater of the same shape performs identically.
How to choose a style for an outdoor room
- Measure the usable area. Record the clear floor area, ceiling or canopy height, nearby walls, furniture, doors, and the route people use to enter and leave. A compact tabletop unit may suit a small dining setting, while a freestanding heater needs room around its base and reflector.
- Decide whether warmth or a flame-centered focal point is the goal. A patio heater is intended to provide radiant warmth; a gas fire pit is designed around an open flame and shared seating. Keep those functions separate when planning the space.
- Shortlist models with published specifications. Look for the fuel type, output, dimensions, weight, approved cylinder and regulator, safety shutoffs, and coverage statement. If a specification is missing, treat it as not stated rather than guessing from the product’s appearance.
- Read the installation and operating manual before buying. Verify every clearance, surface requirement, wind or weather limitation, and movement instruction. Local fire rules may impose additional requirements.
- Confirm the fuel connection for your region. Portable LPG or propane cylinders, regulators, and hose fittings are not automatically interchangeable across models or markets. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified local supplier if the documentation is unclear.
- Plan a safe location. Choose well-ventilated outdoor space on stable, level ground, away from exits, foot traffic, overhead coverings, and combustible materials. Keep the cylinder and hose arranged exactly as the manual shows.
- Test the layout without the heater running. Check that chairs, doors, umbrellas, planting, and lighting do not intrude into the required clearance zone. Make sure people will not need to pass close to the appliance or hose.
Outdoor-only safety requirements
Never use a gas heater in an enclosed space
The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) says portable propane heaters must be used outdoors and never indoors or in enclosed spaces. Fire and Rescue NSW likewise emphasizes well-ventilated outdoor use. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns against using fuel-burning portable heaters while sleeping in enclosed spaces such as tents, campers, or vehicles.
Carbon monoxide can accumulate where fresh air is restricted, even if a door, window, or tent flap is partly open. A patio, balcony, porch, or terrace is suitable only when the appliance’s instructions and local rules permit it and the area remains genuinely open and ventilated.
Use a stable, level surface
Set the heater on the surface specified by its manufacturer. Fire and Rescue NSW recommends stable, level ground. Do not compensate for an uneven base with loose blocks, improvised wedges, or furniture that the manual does not approve. A tabletop model needs a table that will not wobble or overturn under the heater’s weight.

Maintain clearances
Keep the appliance away from combustible furniture, curtains, umbrellas, plants, decorations, stored materials, and building elements. Avoid overhead coverings unless the manual specifically allows the arrangement and gives a clearance. The required distances are model-specific, so use the manual’s dimensions rather than a generic rule.

Keep it out of traffic
PERC advises positioning a heater away from foot traffic and exits. Place it where people will not brush against the cylinder, reflector, glass tube, hose, or controls. Do not block a doorway or the route to a fire exit. Children and pets should not be able to pull on the appliance or climb onto its support.
Shut down before moving
Turn the heater off and allow it to cool before relocating it. PERC specifically advises shutting off a heater before moving it. Wheels do not make it safe to reposition an operating appliance; hot surfaces, an open flame, and a connected cylinder remain hazards.
Store cylinders correctly
Store propane cylinders upright outdoors in a ventilated area, following the cylinder and heater instructions. Keep cylinders away from heat sources, ignition sources, and combustible storage. Close the appliance control and cylinder valve as directed when the heater is not in use.

Portable heaters commonly use LPG or propane, but the approved cylinder size, valve, regulator pressure, hose, and connector depend on the model and local market. Planika documents LPG or propane for its Pyramid example; ELGAS notes that tabletop fuel arrangements vary.
- Match the cylinder and regulator to the exact model documentation.
- Use only approved hoses, connectors, and replacement parts.
- Do not modify fittings to make an incompatible cylinder fit.
- Position the cylinder as shown in the manual, upright and protected from impact.
- If you smell gas, see damaged tubing, or cannot make a secure connection, turn off the supply, keep ignition sources away, leave the area, and contact a qualified professional or the supplier.
Local regulations can differ from the instructions supplied with a product sold elsewhere. Confirm requirements with the manufacturer and the relevant fire authority before installation.

Safety features: useful, but never assumed
Look for explicit statements about flame-failure protection and tilt or tip-over shutoffs. Planika lists a thermocouple and tilt or fall sensors for its Pyramid model. Those controls can stop gas flow in specific conditions, but they do not replace correct placement, clearances, supervision, or manual instructions.
If a safety shutoff activates repeatedly, do not bypass it or hold a control open to keep the burner lit. Turn the heater off, let it cool, and use the troubleshooting and service procedure for that model. A recurring shutdown may indicate an installation, fuel, ventilation, or appliance fault that requires qualified service.

This table identifies products to investigate, not universal recommendations. Wind exposure, furniture arrangement, fuel availability, and the manufacturer’s specifications can change the practical choice.
Before each use
- Confirm the heater is outdoors in a well-ventilated location.
- Check that the base is level and stable and that required clearances remain unobstructed.
- Inspect the cylinder, regulator, hose, connector, glass, reflector, and controls for visible damage.
- Keep combustibles, umbrellas, curtains, packaging, and stored materials outside the clearance zone.
- Verify that doors, exits, and walking routes remain clear.
- Follow the model’s lighting and shutdown sequence exactly.
- Stay present while the appliance is operating; never leave it running while people sleep.
Bottom line for selecting a portable gas heater
Mushroom or dome, pyramid, and tabletop heaters are the three common portable gas-heater formats for outdoor spaces. Select by measured footprint, documented output, fuel compatibility, mobility, stability, and manual-specified clearances—not by shape alone. A fire pit is a separate, flame-centered option.
The non-negotiable requirement is outdoor use in a ventilated area. Keep the appliance stable and away from combustibles, overhead coverings, traffic, and exits; shut it off before moving; store cylinders upright outdoors; and treat every safety feature and connection as model-specific.
