A true pour-in-place concrete countertop is cast directly on the cabinets or other installed base, so you do not have to lift and flip a heavy cured slab. The trade-off is that your form must be rigid, accurately level, perfectly sealed and accessible for screeding, consolidation and finishing in its final position. This guide covers the complete sequence, explains how it differs from the more common cast-and-flip method, and shows how to time curing and sealing for a kitchen surface.
What “pour in place” means
Concrete countertops are commonly made face-down in a melamine form, cured, removed and then flipped into position. Fine Homebuilding describes that face-down approach as the usual method. A pour-in-place counter reverses the setup: the form is supported on the installed cabinet base and the concrete is placed, consolidated, screeded and finished where the counter will remain. That eliminates the riskiest handling step, but it leaves less freedom to work on the underside or correct a form that is out of level.

Do not confuse a project that merely pours concrete into a removable mold with a cabinet-top installation. The QUIKRETE project page demonstrates forming a piece that is removed and flipped; it is useful for form-building and finishing techniques, but it is not a complete cast-in-place cabinet procedure. For the method comparison, see Fine Homebuilding’s pour-in-place guide.
| Decision | Pour in place | Cast and flip |
|---|---|---|
| Form location | On the installed base, at the final elevation | On a separate work surface, usually face down |
| Heavy handling | Avoids lifting and flipping the cured slab | Requires the cured piece to be lifted and flipped |
| Access while placing | Must reach every corner and opening in the room | Usually offers easier access around the mold |
| Surface result | Depends on in-place screeding, vibration and finishing | Depends on the mold face and the finishing after the flip |
| Evidence for labor or finish advantage | No controlled comparison establishes a universal time or quality advantage; the result is project-dependent. | |
Plan the counter before building the form
Measure the installed base
Check cabinet runs, wall irregularities, finished thickness, backsplash clearances and every overhang. The form must be supported continuously and remain immobile while wet concrete is being placed. Dry-fit the form materials and verify the finished elevation before mixing anything. A pour-in-place slab is not forgiving of a cabinet that moves or a wall that is out of square.

Lay out sink and appliance openings
Use the sink, cooktop or other appliance manufacturer’s current template. Build the knockout or opening into the form before the pour, including any required radius corners and clearance for the fixture. Recheck the opening against the actual fixture, not only a drawing. Once concrete has hardened, changing an opening is a cutting and dust-producing operation rather than a simple form adjustment.
Decide how the form will come apart
Plan access to screws, braces and temporary supports before pouring. Melamine is a common form material because its smooth face can release cleanly. Seal every inside seam with silicone caulk so cement paste cannot escape and create fins or voids. Let the caulk cure according to its label, then inspect the bead for gaps, bubbles or breaks.
Materials, tools and protective equipment
Gather everything before water is added. A delayed placement can create a cold joint or leave a batch in the mixer while the first batch begins to stiffen.
| Category | Items supported by the project guidance |
|---|---|
| Concrete and finish | Countertop-specific concrete mix; optional compatible liquid color; sealer; grout for remaining bug holes; sanding or polishing pads |
| Forming | Melamine; silicone caulk; sink or appliance knockout materials; bracing and fasteners |
| Mixing and placement | Drill with mixer blade or paddle; mixing containers; shovel or scoop; wire mesh or rebar if appropriate for the design |
| Consolidation and screeding | Straight 2×4 or other straightedge; rubber mallet; vibrating palm sander used without a pad where the relevant instructions permit |
| Curing and safety | Plastic sheeting; waterproof gloves; eye protection; dust mask or respirator for dusty operations |
QUIKRETE’s safety instruction is explicit: When working with cement-based products, always wear eye protection and waterproof gloves.
Follow the current label and safety data sheet for the mix, colorant, sealer and any dust-producing work. Concrete Network also lists a dust mask or respirator for its process. Keep wash water and cement residue out of drains.
Step-by-step: build and pour the countertop
1. Make and brace the form
- Transfer the verified counter dimensions and opening templates to the melamine.
- Fasten the form to a stable, level support on the installed base. Add bracing so the walls cannot bow when concrete is packed against them.
- Install the sink or appliance knockout and check its position from above and below.
- Run a continuous silicone bead along every inside joint. Tool the bead smooth, remove excess and allow it to cure.
- Inspect the entire cavity for debris, loose screws, unsealed corners and anything that could become embedded.
For a true pour-in-place installation, the form stays supported on the base. Do not switch to the cast-and-flip sequence simply because a removable mold is easier to access.

- Dry powder polycarboxylate superplasticizer makes your concrete more fluid without adding water
- Increases compressive strength and flexural strength
- Allows you to mix faster due to faster wetting out of cement & pigment; Improves color dispersion
- Use with any concrete countertop mix; GFRC, ECC, UHPC, SCC; Use with Portland or CSA cement
- Highly effective at tiny dosages: 0.375% to 1.5% of total cementitious weight (cement + pozzolan)
2. Select and batch a countertop mix
Use a mix intended for countertops and follow that product’s current bag or technical-sheet directions. Water demand, workable time, placement method and cure instructions vary by product; there is no reliable universal water-to-mix ratio to substitute for the manufacturer’s number. Measure water accurately for every batch so color and strength remain consistent.
If the product allows liquid color, add it only in the manner specified by the manufacturer. Concrete Network advises counting liquid color as part of the batch’s water measurement. Record the amount used in the first batch and repeat it for subsequent batches to avoid visible color bands.
3. Place reinforcement and concrete
Reinforcement must be planned before concrete enters the form. The project guidance identifies wire mesh or rebar as options, but it does not provide a structural design for a particular cabinet span, thin edge, sink cutout or overhang. Those conditions can change the required reinforcement and support. Obtain project-specific engineering or qualified concrete advice rather than guessing bar size, spacing or cover.
- Mix only the quantity you can place within the selected product’s workable time.
- Place concrete evenly, working it into corners and around the opening. Where the instructions call for lifts, fill in lifts rather than creating a large unworked mound.
- Keep reinforcement in its intended position as material is placed; do not allow mesh or bar to settle against the form face.
- Maintain a wet edge between batches when the product instructions require continuous placement.
4. Consolidate to remove trapped air
Concrete that is merely shoveled into a form can leave honeycombs and pinholes, especially along edges and around a sink knockout. Work the mix into all corners, then consolidate it. QUIKRETE describes tapping or vibrating the form; TCC Materials calls vibration a crucial step for minimizing pinholes in its instructions.
Use a rubber mallet to tap the outside of the form, or use a palm sander without a sanding pad if that technique is allowed by the applicable guide and can be done without loosening the form. Move methodically around the perimeter and opening. Excessive vibration can segregate a mix or move reinforcement, so stop when the surface settles and large air bubbles stop appearing.

- Combine 1 bag of CX Pro-Formula with 120 lbs of 5,000 PSI concrete to produce roughly 1 cubic foot (enough for 7 square feet at a 1-1/2 inch thickness).
- Available in 16 rich colors, all can be polished to expose aggregates within the concrete.
- Color reproduction may vary depending upon your browser, monitor, and software settings. Your local cement sources, aggregate condition, and other variables will impact the final color of concrete. The colors shown here are representational only and should not be used as a basis for exact color matching. We recommend casting samples prior to casting any project.
- CX Pro-Formula Precast Concrete Countertop Mix should NOT be used with bagged concrete mixes that contain air entrainment admixtures or water-reducers.
5. Screed the top
Run a straight 2×4 or other verified straightedge across the form in a sawing motion. Keep both ends riding on the form walls and fill low areas as you go. Screed in more than one direction if the layout allows, then check the finished elevation against the planned thickness. Do not add unmeasured water to make the surface easier to strike off; extra water changes the product’s designed performance.
6. Protect the fresh surface
Cover the countertop with plastic sheeting as directed by the mix manufacturer. Protect it from foot traffic, vibration, direct sun, wind and rapid drying. Keep the cover from imprinting the surface or touching decorative edges. Leave the form and its braces undisturbed for the product’s specified period.
Curing and form removal: why the dates differ
Cure and stripping instructions are product-specific. TCC Materials’ Tech-Mix Premium Concrete Countertop Mix installation sheet dated September 23, 2024, says to cover the mix and cure it for 18–24 hours in dry conditions before its form-removal guidance. That is an instruction for that product and condition, not a universal concrete rule.
Sealing is a separate decision. Concrete Network describes approximately 28 days for full cure before sealer application. QUIKRETE’s outdoor bar instructions likewise say to wait for its countertop mix to cure the full 28 days before sealing. Follow the selected mix’s label first, then the sealer manufacturer’s surface-preparation and cure requirements. A short strip time does not automatically mean the slab is ready for sealer or kitchen service.

- Confirm that the mix’s form-removal time and conditions have been met.
- Remove braces and fasteners without prying against a fragile edge.
- Separate melamine gradually. If a piece resists, work around the joint rather than levering against the countertop.
- Inspect edges, corners, the sink opening and the underside support before applying loads.
Finish defects before sealing
Pinholes and bug holes
Small voids are commonly related to trapped air or insufficient consolidation. After the concrete has hardened enough for the selected finishing process, clean the surface and fill remaining bug holes with a compatible grout or cementitious filler. Sand or polish only as far as the desired aggregate exposure and the product instructions allow.

Rough edges
Use the specified sanding or polishing pads with dust control and respiratory protection. Work evenly so one edge does not become thinner or more rounded than its neighbors. Do not grind through a reinforcement layer or alter a sink opening without understanding the structural and fixture consequences.
Cracks, movement or a shifted opening
A crack, loose cabinet, bowed form or misaligned knockout is not a cosmetic defect to hide with sealer. Stop, document the condition and obtain advice from a qualified concrete professional or engineer before loading the counter or modifying it.
Choose a kitchen-appropriate sealer
The best sealer is not a universal brand or chemistry; it is a product whose label explicitly permits use on concrete countertops and suits the expected food, moisture, heat and cleaning exposure. Before purchase, verify:
- Required cure age and moisture condition of the concrete
- Surface preparation, sanding or cleaning instructions
- Number of coats, recoat window and final cure time
- Whether the finish is suitable for a kitchen countertop and the intended contact with food or food residues
- Resistance and limitations for acids, oils, hot cookware, abrasion and household cleaners
Apply only after the slab has reached the mix’s required cure. Ventilate the work area, keep people and pets away during application and cure, and use the sealer’s own safety data sheet. A sealer reduces staining and simplifies cleaning; it does not make the concrete impervious to every chemical or eliminate the need for cutting boards and trivets.
Common failure points and fixes
| Symptom | Likely process issue | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Paste leaks from a seam | Incomplete silicone bead or a form joint that moved | Stop the pour if possible, stabilize the form and seal the joint; do not rely on surface sealer to repair a moving form. |
| Pinholes along the edges | Air trapped because corners were not worked or the form was not consolidated | Improve corner placement and controlled tapping or vibration on the next section; fill permitted cosmetic voids after cure. |
| Color variation | Different water or color amounts between batches, or batches placed at different stages | Measure every ingredient consistently and follow the colorant instructions; accept that an existing variation may remain visible. |
| Form will not release | Concrete locked around an unsealed seam, fastener or undercut | Remove hardware methodically and separate the melamine without levering against the slab edge. |
| Sealer remains soft or cloudy | Concrete was too young, damp or outside the sealer’s application conditions | Stop use, check the sealer label and contact its manufacturer for remediation; do not add another coat blindly. |
