Powder-coating labels are not interchangeable quality grades. AAMA 2603, 2604 and 2605 identify different performance requirements; QUALICOAT is a separate certification scheme; and a warranty is a conditional contract whose coverage depends on the product, substrate, applicator, location and written exclusions. The reliable way to specify an architectural finish is to name the governing standard and edition, substrate and pretreatment, exact product, appearance, approved applicator, maintenance duties and warranty terms together.

What AAMA 2603, 2604 and 2605 actually tell you
In North American architectural work, AAMA designations (now maintained within the FGIA standards system) describe minimum performance requirements for organic coatings on architectural products. They are specification benchmarks, not product brands and not a universal ranking of every finish on the market. A label alone does not select the right coating for a coastal façade, a shaded interior frame or a high-rise exposed to intense ultraviolet radiation.
The current edition cited in the project documents matters. Ask the manufacturer or architect to identify the edition, then verify that the product’s technical data sheet and test evidence correspond to that edition and to the intended substrate and exposure.
| Designation | What it is used to establish | Example product mapping | Example film-thickness range |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAMA 2603 | Basic performance requirements for architectural organic coatings; typically selected where the exposure and color-retention demands are moderate. | Sherwin-Williams lists Powdura 3000 as meeting AAMA 2603. | 1.8–3.0 mil for Powdura 3000, according to the manufacturer’s product selector. |
| AAMA 2604 | More demanding performance than 2603, including stronger expectations for weathering and durability. | Sherwin-Williams lists Powdura 4000 and its Anodite Series as AAMA 2604. | 2.0–3.0 mil for Powdura 4000 and Anodite, according to the product selector. |
| AAMA 2605 | The most demanding of these three AAMA architectural coating specifications, used when long-term exterior color and gloss retention are critical. | Sherwin-Williams lists Powdura 5000 as AAMA 2605. | 1.8–3.0 mil for Powdura 5000, according to the product selector. |
The thickness figures above are manufacturer-specific ranges, not universal limits for every product carrying an AAMA designation. A thicker film does not automatically make a coating compliant: pretreatment, cure, adhesion, color, gloss, chalk, fading and other required properties also have to meet the applicable specification.
Do not treat the numbers as a simple “good, better, best” ladder
AAMA 2605 may be unnecessary for a sheltered application, while a nominally lower designation may be unsuitable for a severe marine or high-UV exposure. Conversely, choosing 2605 without confirming approved colors, substrate preparation and applicator capability can create a paper specification that the project cannot deliver. Select the standard from the exposure and design-life requirement, then select a product that has documented compliance.

What QUALICOAT powder coating means
QUALICOAT is a separate quality-label scheme for architectural coatings. Its specifications address the coating plant and equipment, coating materials and finished products. A plant receives the label only after the applicable requirements are met, with licenses, product approvals, inspections and testing by recognized inspectors and ISO 17025-accredited laboratories.
That process is different from simply stating that a product meets AAMA 2603, 2604 or 2605. AAMA is a performance specification; QUALICOAT is a certification and licensing scheme built around controlled production and ongoing conformity checks. A product or applicator may reference both, but one should never be presented as a translation of the other.
QUALICOAT publishes specifications and states that every requirement must be satisfied before a quality label is granted. Its English specification is the official version and authoritative in case of doubt. Confirm the relevant QUALICOAT class, approved product and licensed plant for the market where the work will be performed; classes and national implementation details can differ.

1. Start with exposure, substrate and design life
- Exposure: Record direct sun, shade, rainfall, humidity, industrial pollutants, salt spray, freeze-thaw cycles and expected cleaning chemicals. A coastal elevation and an indoor lobby should not inherit the same default.
- Substrate: Identify the aluminum alloy or other approved substrate, cast or extruded form, and any dissimilar-metal contact. The pretreatment and cure schedule must be compatible with that substrate.
- Design life and appearance: Establish how long color, gloss, adhesion and film integrity must remain acceptable, and define the permitted change in appearance.
PPG describes architectural offerings that include durable polyester, ultra-durable polyester and FEVE formulations, with products tested against FGIA/AAMA 2603, 2604 and 2605 and QUALICOAT Class 1 and 2 standards. Those categories illustrate that resin chemistry and certification references are separate selection axes; they do not create a universal ranking. Verify the exact formulation, approved colors and test data for the product being bid.

2. Define the appearance before requesting samples
Write the color reference, gloss level, texture, metallic or pearlescent effect, edge and corner appearance, and acceptable batch variation into the submittal requirements. Metallic finishes can show orientation or application differences that are less visible on solid colors. A sample panel should be approved under the project lighting and viewed at realistic distances; a small chip cannot demonstrate every large-panel effect.
3. Check application capability
Ask whether the proposed applicator is approved for the selected product and warranty. Confirm line pretreatment, oven controls, cure verification, masking, racking, handling and packaging. For a QUALICOAT project, verify the plant’s current license and the status of the specific coating material. For an AAMA project, obtain the manufacturer’s documentation showing that the product and process meet the required designation.
What to put in the written specification
A short phrase such as “powder coat to AAMA 2605” leaves too many decisions open. A practical architectural specification should identify:
- The governing AAMA/FGIA standard and edition, or the applicable QUALICOAT specification and class.
- The substrate, alloy, pretreatment system and any project-specific primer or conversion coating.
- The powder manufacturer, manufacturing address and exact product code or series.
- Color, gloss, texture, metallic requirements, sample-panel approval and allowable visual variation.
- Application parameters, including the specified dry-film range, cure requirements and areas that must remain uncoated.
- Cleaning and maintenance recommendations, including prohibited solvents or abrasive methods.
- Protection during fabrication, transport and installation, plus the method and timing for removing protective film.
- The approved applicator, plant location, inspection records and submittals required at tender.
- Warranty duration, covered properties, geographic limits, exclusions, maintenance obligations and the procedure for making a claim.
TCI’s AAMA user guide similarly recommends naming the required AAMA standard, aluminum alloy, powder manufacturer and address, product code, maintenance recommendations, installation protection and tender information identifying the powder product and approved applicator. Treat that guide as manufacturer guidance and adapt it to the project’s governing documents.

How powder-coating warranties really work
A warranty is a conditional written promise, not a guarantee that a finish will look new forever. Read the actual warranty certificate, not just a sales headline. Coverage may depend on the building’s location, selected product, color, substrate, applicator, pretreatment, film thickness, cure, installation, cleaning and the time limit for notifying the warrantor.
| Published example | Headline term | What must be verified |
|---|---|---|
| Interpon D1000 | Up to 10 years | Regional warranty document, approved applicator, product/color eligibility, exposure and all exclusions. |
| Interpon D2000 | Up to 20 years | The same project-specific conditions; “up to” is not an automatic term for every installation. |
| Interpon D3000 | Up to 30 years | Confirm that the building location, finish and application qualify for the advertised duration. |
| TCI AAMA 2605 warranty example | Coverage for named coating properties under stated conditions | Approved aluminum substrate, proper application, purchase and handling requirements, maintenance and the precise list of covered properties. |
AkzoNobel’s Interpon D color card presents the 10-, 20- and 30-year figures above when the coating is applied by an Interpon D Approved Applicator. The wording “up to” means the figure is a product-family maximum, not a promise that every color, project or exposure receives it. Sherwin-Williams likewise states that project-specific warranty terms and limitations vary with building location, selected powder and applicator.
Properties commonly limited by the warranty
Some documents cover color change, gloss retention, chalking, adhesion or film integrity separately, with different thresholds and remedies. A warranty may repair or replace defective coated parts rather than pay all removal, access, labor or consequential costs. It may exclude damage from construction handling, harsh cleaners, standing water, galvanic contact, cutting or drilling after coating, improper storage, unusual pollutants and failure to follow the maintenance schedule.

Questions to ask before accepting a warranty
- Which legal entity issues it, and in which country or state is it enforceable?
- Is the term measured from application, shipment or substantial completion?
- Does the exact color, gloss, texture and product code qualify?
- Must the work be performed by a named approved applicator?
- What substrate, pretreatment and dry-film range are mandatory?
- What cleaning records, inspections, photographs or test reports must the owner retain?
- What remedy is offered, and are labor, access, freight and re-coating included?
- What is the claim deadline and required notice procedure?
Film-thickness measurement: useful check, incomplete proof
A coating-thickness gauge can confirm one measurable characteristic, but a reading alone cannot prove that the entire system complies with an architectural specification. The cited Sherwin-Williams product selector references ASTM D7091 for film-thickness measurement and lists the product-specific ranges shown earlier.

- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
For meaningful acceptance, the project must define the gauge type, calibration method, measurement locations, number of readings, substrate condition and statistical rule for passing. Calibrate on a smooth reference or approved shims as required by the instrument and method, then record readings across representative faces, edges and parts. Investigate low or high readings rather than averaging away a localized defect. Pair thickness records with cure verification, adhesion or other tests required by the governing standard and warranty.
A step-by-step specification and approval workflow
- Set the performance target. Document exposure, design life, appearance retention and the current AAMA/FGIA or QUALICOAT requirement.
- Confirm the substrate system. Identify alloy, pretreatment, primer if any, masking and repair limitations with the fabricator and applicator.
- Shortlist compliant products. Request technical data, compliance statements, approved-color lists, safety information and regional warranty forms for the exact product codes.
- Prequalify the applicator. Verify equipment, pretreatment controls, oven uniformity, inspection records, approved status and capacity for the part sizes and finish effects.
- Approve appearance samples. Review full-size panels under project lighting, record the accepted color and gloss, and define how batch variation will be judged.
- Write installation and maintenance controls. Specify packaging, handling, protective-film removal, touch-up limits, cleaning agents and inspection points.
- Review the warranty before tender. Attach the actual terms or identify them by revision, and make eligibility a contract requirement rather than a post-award assumption.
- Document production acceptance. Retain batch numbers, pretreatment and cure records, thickness readings, inspection reports, delivery condition and photographs before concealment.
Common specification mistakes and practical fixes
- Mistake: using “2605” as a synonym for premium. Fix: Tie the designation to exposure, current edition, product data and required properties.
- Mistake: calling QUALICOAT a higher AAMA class. Fix: Identify it as a separate certification scheme and state the exact class, licensed plant and approved material.
- Mistake: accepting a generic color-card warranty. Fix: Obtain the region-specific certificate for the product, color, location and applicator.
- Mistake: specifying thickness without a measurement plan. Fix: Name ASTM D7091 or the governing method, gauge calibration, sampling and acceptance criteria.
- Mistake: ignoring installation damage. Fix: Define racking, packaging, protective film, field cutting, touch-up limits and who pays for rejected parts.
- Mistake: assuming a resin name proves durability. Fix: Require documented compliance and exposure suitability for the exact formulation and finish.
A compact decision framework
Choose the standard first, then the chemistry, then the applicator and warranty. For moderate exposure with controlled appearance expectations, an AAMA 2603 product may be appropriate. Where exterior weathering demands are higher, evaluate AAMA 2604 products and ultra-durable formulations. For severe, highly visible or long-life façades, investigate AAMA 2605 or an appropriate QUALICOAT-certified route, but still verify color eligibility, plant controls and the written warranty. No designation removes the need for compatible substrate preparation, correct cure and documented maintenance.
The strongest submittal is therefore a matched package: standard and edition, substrate and pretreatment, exact product and finish, approved applicator, inspection plan and warranty certificate. If one element is missing, the apparent rating may not translate into the performance the project owner expects.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is QUALICOAT equivalent to AAMA 2605?
No. AAMA 2605 is a performance specification, while QUALICOAT is a certification scheme covering approved materials, licensed plants, inspections and testing. A project can reference both, but one does not convert into the other.
Can a coating meet an AAMA designation at any film thickness?
The designation does not set one universal thickness for every product. Use the exact manufacturer range and the project’s measurement method; thickness is only one part of compliance.
Does an approved applicator automatically provide the longest warranty?
No. Approved application may be a condition of eligibility, but duration still depends on product, color, location, substrate, exposure and the warranty’s exclusions and procedures.
What documents should an owner keep after installation?
Retain the approved product and color records, warranty certificate, applicator information, batch and cure records, thickness and inspection reports, delivery photographs and maintenance instructions.
