Continuing Education: Practice Matters is an Architectural Record online continuing-education section built from five articles on AI, visualization engines, design competitions, mergers and acquisitions, and planning during uncertain economic conditions. The course is identified as K2506A. The publisher says that reading the articles and passing the accompanying quiz earns one AIA learning unit, with the credit automatically reported to AIA. Because course pages and availability can change, confirm that K2506A is currently open before beginning.

What Practice Matters is—and what it is not

Practice Matters is not a software review, a single lecture, or a product-training course. It is a five-article editorial continuing-education section from Architectural Record that links technology decisions with the business realities of running an architecture practice. Its stated learning objectives ask readers to think about when to enter a design competition, how to operate in an uncertain economy, what sellers and buyers should examine in a firm acquisition, and how digital tools may help architects work more effectively.

The canonical, year-free title points to course K2506A and the five articles listed below. Architectural Record also publishes a separate section titled “Continuing Education: Practice Matters 2026.” That later issue has a different set of six articles, so do not assume it is the same course when looking for the quiz or credit record.

How to complete the course and claim credit

  1. Open the official course page. Start at Architectural Record’s Continuing Education: Practice Matters page and check that the page identifies course K2506A and shows the quiz as available.
  2. Read all five linked articles. The section is designed as a set. Reading only the technology pieces will leave out the competition, transaction, and business-planning objectives.
  3. Take the online quiz. The publisher describes successful completion of the quiz, after the readings, as the condition for earning the learning unit. The accessible course information does not state a passing percentage, number of attempts, expiration date, or time limit, so use the current instructions displayed on the course page.
  4. Finish the submission process shown on the page. Complete any required identity or course fields exactly as requested. Do not treat merely opening the articles as a completed course.
  5. Check your AIA record. Architectural Record says the credit is automatically reported to AIA. Keep the completion confirmation and check the AIA transcript after the provider’s reporting process has had time to update. If the credit does not appear, compare the name and account information used for the quiz with your AIA record and follow the current support instructions on the course page.

The page does not establish that the course is permanently open, that the quiz is free in every circumstance, or that a particular membership status is required. Those details should be confirmed on the live course page rather than inferred from an older listing.

The five articles at a glance

Article Primary subject Question it helps you examine
Thought Partner: AI and Design Artificial intelligence in architectural work Where can AI support design work, and what should a practice verify before relying on it?
Game Changer: Video Game Engines for Visualization Interactive visualization, virtual reality, and augmented reality When does an interactive environment provide more value than a conventional rendered image?
No Contest: Architectural Competitions Competition strategy Does a specific competition justify the time, cost, risk, and strategic opportunity?
Sealing the Deal: Mergers and Acquisitions Buying or selling an architecture firm What benefits, liabilities, and integration questions matter to each side of a transaction?
High Anxiety: Planning in Uncertain Times Operating through economic uncertainty How can a practice plan when workload, costs, and forecasts are unstable?

AI and design: read the statistic in context

The AI article reports results from an American Institute of Architects survey released in March 2025: 53 percent of architects had experimented with AI, while 6 percent used it regularly. Architectural Record is reporting those figures from the AIA survey; they are not a 2026 adoption estimate and should not be presented as a current industry census.

The distinction between experimenting and regular use is useful for practice leaders. A team may test image generation, text drafting, precedent searches, or data organization without putting an AI system into a repeatable production workflow. A policy discussion should therefore ask what “use” means in a particular office: occasional exploration, internal research, client-facing content, code-related analysis, or a deliverable that carries professional liability.

A practical review before adopting an AI workflow

  • Define the task. Write down the design or business problem first. “Use AI” is not a measurable objective; reducing time spent on a defined repetitive task is.
  • Identify the information involved. Check whether prompts or uploaded files contain confidential client information, personal data, unpublished designs, or contractual restrictions.
  • Set a human review point. Assign a qualified person to verify dimensions, code interpretations, sources, assumptions, and any client-facing statement produced with assistance from an AI system.
  • Record the workflow. Keep enough information about inputs, revisions, and approvals that another team member can understand how the output was produced.
  • Measure usefulness honestly. Compare the time saved with the time required to check and correct the result. An impressive first draft is not automatically a productive workflow.

The course objective is to consider how digital technologies may help architects work more effectively, not to establish that AI is appropriate for every project or that the reported percentages predict your firm’s adoption path.

Game engines: why Unreal Engine and Unity appear in an architecture CE course

The visualization article describes Unreal Engine and Unity as commercially available game engines that can create interactive architectural environments. In this context, “game engine” means a real-time software environment for combining geometry, materials, lighting, cameras, user interaction, and other data into an explorable scene. The output can support project visualization as well as virtual-reality (VR) and augmented-reality (AR) applications.

Architectural Record reports several practice examples. Populous incorporated Unreal Engine into its work. HKS used game-engine-powered VR in a project exploring domestic environments for people with diabetes. Payette used Unity for VR and AR visualization and for design decisions. These are reported examples from the article, not independent performance tests or endorsements.

Nathan Tobeck, regional digital lead at Populous, explains the value this way: “Engines can help to structure this information and visualize it in intuitive and user-friendly ways.” He also says, “We were able to take enormous sets of data and complex geometries and visualize them simultaneously in high fidelity.” The practical implication is that an engine can be more than a presentation layer: it can help a team inspect relationships among complex geometry, project information, and user experience.

Choosing an engine by workflow rather than reputation

The article does not publish a formal head-to-head evaluation. A useful decision framework, inferred from the applications it describes, is to compare the tools against the job your practice actually needs to do:

Decision axis Questions for the project team
Interaction level Is the deliverable a guided walkthrough, a free-roaming environment, a simulation, or a static image sequence?
Authoring and BIM integration How will geometry and project information move from the existing building-information-model and authoring tools into the engine, and how will revisions be tracked?
Data scale Can the chosen workflow handle the project’s complex geometry and information without making review impractical?
VR and AR requirements Does the client or design team need a headset-based experience, an AR overlay, or only a desktop presentation?
Decision purpose Is the environment intended for early design exploration, client communication, stakeholder testing, or coordination among disciplines?

Start with the decision the environment must improve. A highly interactive model that does not change a design decision may be an expensive presentation. Conversely, an interactive scene can reveal scale, circulation, visibility, or user-experience issues that a sequence of still renderings leaves ambiguous.

Design competitions: decide before committing resources

“No Contest: Architectural Competitions” addresses factors to consider before entering a competition. The accessible course information does not establish a universal success rate, a standard fee, or a statistic showing that competitions produce better projects. The decision is therefore best treated as a structured go/no-go review rather than a promise of publicity or commissions.

A competition go/no-go checklist

  • Brief and eligibility: Can the team satisfy the program, jurisdictional requirements, submission format, and eligibility rules without weakening its normal project commitments?
  • Strategic fit: Does the subject, location, client type, or project scale support the firm’s intended direction and portfolio?
  • Resources: Who will lead the work, and what staff, consultants, visualization capacity, and principal time are realistically available during the submission period?
  • Compensation and exposure: What is paid, what is reimbursed, and what recognition or future opportunity is explicitly promised rather than assumed?
  • Intellectual property and reuse: What rights does the organizer receive, and can the firm retain or reuse drawings, models, images, and concepts?
  • Probability of completion: Are the deadline and review stages compatible with the firm’s current workload and cash position?
  • Risk tolerance: What happens if the competition is canceled, delayed, or awarded differently from the published brief?

Document the assumptions behind the decision. If the team proceeds, establish a capped budget, named decision-makers, internal review dates, and a stop point if the brief or workload changes. That turns enthusiasm into a manageable practice commitment.

Mergers and acquisitions: two different sets of questions

“Sealing the Deal: Mergers and Acquisitions” frames acquisitions as a matter with benefits and pitfalls for both sellers and buyers. A transaction can affect ownership, leadership, staff, clients, project obligations, culture, and the combined firm’s ability to deliver work. The course objective is to weigh those factors, not to claim that buying or selling is inherently superior to remaining independent.

For a firm considering a sale

  • Clarify the desired outcome: succession, liquidity, preservation of the practice, expanded capabilities, or relief from administrative responsibility.
  • Prepare a truthful picture of active projects, receivables, liabilities, leases, equipment, intellectual property, disputes, and contractual obligations.
  • Identify relationships and people that make the firm valuable, then assess how they would be retained after a change in ownership.
  • Define the seller’s intended role and time horizon. A transaction that depends on indefinite personal involvement is not the same as a clean handover.
  • Test cultural compatibility and decision rights before treating a headline price as the main measure of value.

For a prospective buyer

  • Examine the quality and concentration of the backlog rather than relying on a single revenue figure.
  • Review project profitability, staffing needs, pending claims, insurance, debt, leases, and obligations that may transfer with the practice.
  • Determine whether the target’s systems, documentation, and technology can be integrated without disrupting active work.
  • Interview key staff and evaluate retention risks, reporting lines, compensation expectations, and professional registrations.
  • Model several integration scenarios, including slower-than-expected revenue, delayed projects, and the cost of harmonizing systems.

Specialist legal, tax, accounting, and professional-advice requirements depend on the transaction’s jurisdiction and structure. The CE material supplies a framework for questions; it does not replace transaction-specific advice or establish a standard deal structure.

Planning when economic conditions are uncertain

“High Anxiety: Planning in Uncertain Times” adds the operating context for the other four articles. A firm deciding whether to pursue a competition, adopt a digital workflow, or acquire another practice is making that choice against a changing workload and cost environment. Planning should therefore be continuous and trigger-based rather than a single annual forecast.

A compact scenario-planning routine

  1. Set a baseline. List committed work, expected billing dates, fixed costs, variable project costs, staffing commitments, and near-term obligations.
  2. Create at least three cases. Use a base case, a slower-workload case, and a stronger-demand case. The point is to expose decisions that change across conditions, not to pretend that one forecast is certain.
  3. Choose leading indicators. Examples include signed backlog, proposal conversion, receivables aging, consultant commitments, and staff utilization. Define who reviews each indicator and how often.
  4. Attach actions to thresholds. Decide in advance what happens if backlog falls below a chosen level, receivables age beyond the firm’s tolerance, or a major project slips.
  5. Protect optionality. Stage hiring, software commitments, competition spending, and expansion decisions so that the firm can adjust without abandoning active client obligations.
  6. Communicate clearly. Explain the assumptions and decision triggers to principals and staff. Uncertainty is harder to manage when only one person knows which scenario the firm is following.

This approach does not predict the economy. It makes the firm’s responses faster and more deliberate when conditions change.

How the five subjects fit together

The value of Practice Matters is in the combination. AI and game engines concern how work is produced and communicated. Competitions concern how a firm chooses opportunities. Acquisitions concern ownership, succession, and capability. Uncertain-times planning supplies the financial and operational discipline needed to make any of those choices responsibly.

After completing the readings, write one practice question for each theme: Which AI task is safe to pilot? Which visualization decision requires interactivity? Which competition merits a go/no-go review? What would a buyer or seller need to verify? Which business indicator should trigger a change in plan? Turning the articles into those questions makes the learning unit useful beyond the quiz.

What the course information does not establish

  • It does not provide a verified 2026 estimate of AI adoption; the 53-percent and 6-percent figures come from an AIA survey released in March 2025.
  • It does not publish competition-success rates, acquisition-outcome statistics, or a universal business-planning formula.
  • It does not constitute independent testing of Unreal Engine or Unity.
  • It does not state a quiz passing score, attempt limit, expiration date, or permanent availability.
  • It does not make every recommendation suitable for every firm, project, jurisdiction, or client contract.

Use the current Architectural Record course page for enrollment and reporting instructions, and treat the articles as a prompt for disciplined professional judgment rather than as a substitute for project-specific advice.
