Principles of Design: Contrast in Art and Design

Contrast uses differences in value, color, shape, texture, size, and position to distinguish forms and guide attention in a composition.

Contrast is the use of perceptible differences to distinguish parts of a composition and guide the viewer’s attention. In a painting, that might mean a bright shape against a dark field, a rough passage beside a smooth one, or an organic form among geometric shapes. Color is only one way to create contrast.

What contrast means in a composition

Contrast occurs when unlike qualities are placed in relation so their differences become visible. Adobe Education defines it as “the difference in quality between two instances of an art element, or using opposing qualities next to each other” (Adobe Education). Oklahoma State University Extension notes that contrast can make elements easier to understand and distinguish, using qualities such as size, texture, shape, number, color, and position (Oklahoma State University Extension).

The practical question is not simply whether two things differ, but what that difference helps the viewer see. Contrast can separate forms, establish a focal point, or make one element more prominent than its surroundings. It is one way to organize a visual reading order: decide what should attract attention first, then use differences to make supporting elements feel secondary.

Ways to create contrast in art

Contrast can come from a single quality or from several working together. These examples show how the method and its effect can vary:

What differs Example What the contrast can do
Value A small light shape against a large dark field Separate the shape from its surroundings and draw attention to it
Color Warm hues beside cool hues, or strongly different hues placed together Make color relationships more noticeable; color contrast alone does not guarantee readable text
Shape An irregular organic form beside a precise geometric form Emphasize the character of one or both forms
Texture A rough, broken surface beside a smooth passage Make surface quality and material differences easier to perceive
Size or number One large form among several small forms, or a single object beside a group Establish difference in scale or make an individual element stand out
Position An element placed apart from a cluster, or off-center against a more regular arrangement Set it apart spatially and influence where the eye moves
Line or form Heavy lines beside delicate ones, or a solid form beside an open one Distinguish visual weight or structure

These approaches can be combined, but they do not all do the same job. A difference in value may separate a subject clearly, while a difference in texture may call attention to how a surface is painted. Choose the quality that supports the intended effect rather than adding contrast indiscriminately.

How to use contrast without making everything compete

  1. Choose the first point of attention. Identify the subject or passage the viewer should notice first.
  2. Name the difference that will emphasize it. Decide whether value, color, scale, shape, texture, line, or position best supports that focus.
  3. Keep other contrasts in supporting roles. If every region has equally strong differences, the viewer may have no clear priority. Let secondary areas provide visual information without competing at the same level.
  4. Check the result from a distance. See whether the main forms separate and whether the intended focal point reads clearly. If not, adjust the relevant difference rather than increasing every kind of contrast at once.

This is a compositional guide, not a rule that every painting must have one dominant focal point. A quieter or more evenly weighted arrangement may be intentional; the contrasts should still serve that choice.

Color contrast is not the whole principle

Color-specific teaching often distinguishes hue, value (light and dark), warm and cool relationships, saturation, complementary colors, simultaneous contrast, and color quantity. Adobe discusses these as color-contrast concepts, while also noting that contrast can come from size, position, typographic weight, and spacing (Adobe’s guide to color contrast). Those color categories are one framework within the broader design principle, not an exhaustive list of ways to create contrast.

Most importantly, a difference in hue is not necessarily a strong difference in value. Two vivid colors can look striking together yet have similar lightness. In a painting, checking the composition in grayscale can help reveal whether light and dark values still distinguish the important forms. This is a useful visual check, not a substitute for the more specific measurement required for digital text.

Contrast and accessibility in digital work

For digital text, aesthetic contrast and accessibility conformance are related but distinct questions. WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.3 measures contrast using relative luminance—the light emitted or reflected by the foreground and background—so hue or saturation difference alone does not establish a sufficient ratio. The criterion requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text, with exceptions that include inactive interface components, pure decoration, and logotypes. See the W3C explanation of WCAG 2.1 SC 1.4.3 for the criterion’s scope and exceptions.

Do not apply the text threshold automatically to every icon, graphic, or control. Non-text interface elements have separate guidance under WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.11; consult the W3C explanation of non-text contrast. For a text check, identify the actual foreground-and-background pair and evaluate its luminance contrast against the applicable criterion; a vivid complementary pairing is not proof that the text meets the threshold.
