An empty Pringles tube can become a useful countertop organizer in about the time it takes to choose a paint color. Cut the can to the height your items need, decorate the outside, and leave it as a single holder or glue several cans to a shared board for extra stability. Use the finished containers for dry storage. Examples include wooden or metal cooking utensils, pencils, pens, paintbrushes, rulers, and makeup brushes. A decorated cardboard-and-paper tube is not watertight, and adding paint, trim, or adhesive does not turn it into a food-safe vessel. Do not fill it with water, use it as a vase, or store unpackaged food inside it.
Gather materials and prepare the can
A documented version of this craft uses the following materials:
- One or more empty Pringles cans
- A round piece of wood or a small cutting board, if you want a shared base
- Optional small glass bowl for a separate accent or insert
- Spray paint
- Burlap lace and artificial flowers for the pictured rustic finish
- Scissors
- Craft knife
- Hot-glue gun and glue sticks
Those decorative items are examples, not requirements. Substitute wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, fabric, ribbon, washi tape, twine, stickers, acrylic paint, or leftover wallpaper. Choose materials that tolerate the location: paper can work well on a dry desk, while a wipeable painted finish is more practical near cooking splashes.

Clean and dry the tube first
Remove the plastic lid and inner seal, shake out every crumb, and wipe the inside and outside. Let the can become completely dry before painting or gluing. Plan the contents before cutting
Stand the items you want to store next to the can. Mark a cut line at a height that keeps the contents upright while leaving enough of each item visible to grab easily. Short holders suit compact desk supplies; taller cuts are more useful for long utensils, brushes, or tools. If you are making a set, decide whether all cans should match or whether different heights would make the group easier to use.

Step-by-step: make the basic holder
- Measure and mark. Use a ruler or a straight edge to draw a level line around the tube. Check the line from several angles so the finished rim will not look slanted.
- Cut slowly. Use a sharp craft knife to score the cardboard along the mark, then deepen the cut with controlled passes. Scissors can help finish a lightly scored edge, but forcing a knife through the tube can crush it. Keep fingers away from the blade path and cut on a stable, protected surface.
- Inspect the rim. Trim loose fibers and check for a sharp or ragged edge. A narrow strip of paper, fabric, ribbon, or tape around the rim can hide minor unevenness and make the holder more comfortable to handle.
- Paint the exterior. In a well-ventilated area, apply spray paint in light coats rather than one heavy coat. Keep the can upright, follow the paint label’s distance and drying directions, and avoid spraying the inside if the stored items will rub against a soft or tacky surface.
- Let it dry fully. The tutorial that documents this project estimates 20 minutes of active work plus 15 minutes of additional time; those are the publisher’s estimates, not an independent test or a guarantee. Your paint, humidity, number of coats, and decorations can extend the schedule.
- Add the trim. Wrap burlap lace, ribbon, paper, or fabric around the can and attach it with small dots of hot glue. Work in short sections so the material stays straight. If you are using paper, overlap the seam on the least visible side.
- Finish the details. Glue on artificial flowers, a label, a painted stripe, or another accent only after the main wrap is secure. Keep embellishments clear of the opening so they do not catch on brushes or utensils.
- Test the holder. Put in a few intended items and place the can on its final surface. If it rocks, add a flat, non-slip pad underneath or move the heaviest items to a wider base.
Safety while cutting and gluing
A craft knife and hot-glue gun are part of the documented materials, so treat this as an adult-supervised craft when children are involved. Children can help measure, choose colors, or arrange decorations, while an adult handles the blade, hot glue, and spray paint. Let glue cool before touching a bead or pressing the finished piece into service.
Build a stable multi-can caddy
A shared board is optional, but it is useful when several tubes need to stay together or when the contents are tall and top-heavy. A round piece of wood or a small cutting board can serve as the platform.
- Arrange before gluing. Place the finished cans on the board and experiment with a line, triangle, or tight cluster. Leave enough room to reach into each opening and to lift the board by its edges.
- Check balance. Put the heaviest planned items in the cans temporarily. Shift the tubes until the loaded group feels centered rather than weighted toward one side.
- Mark positions. Trace around each can lightly or place small pencil marks so you can return every tube to the chosen location after applying glue.
- Attach with hot glue. Run a continuous bead around the bottom edge of a can, set it on its mark, and hold it still while the glue sets. Repeat for the remaining cans. Avoid flooding the joint; excess glue can create an uneven base.
- Reinforce if needed. Add a second bead around the outside of a joint after the first layer cools. This is helpful for a taller can, but do not lift the caddy until all joints are firm.
- Protect the board. Add felt pads or rubber feet underneath if the caddy will move across a finished counter. Keep the board dry and wipe spills promptly.
Skip the base when you want one can that can move from room to room, when counter space is tight, or when the contents are short and light. The base is a stability choice, not a required step.

Customize the look without buying a full craft kit
Paint-only finish
A single color makes the tube read as a simple container rather than reused packaging. Two thin colors can create a banded effect: paint the body first, mask a stripe after it dries, and apply the second color. Matte paint gives a quiet, chalky appearance; gloss makes wiping dust easier but can highlight dents in the cardboard.
Paper or fabric wrap
Measure the tube’s circumference, cut a strip with a small overlap, and smooth it from one side to the other. A thin paper wrap is easiest on a straight, undamaged tube. Fabric and burlap disguise small imperfections, but seal or glue the cut edge so threads do not unravel.
Trim and label system
Use one trim color for all cans and different labels for their contents, such as “pens,” “brushes,” or “spoons.” Labels are especially useful when several cans share a board. Keep the lettering on a dry exterior surface; condensation and repeated splashes can loosen paper labels.

The documented example uses burlap lace and artificial flowers over spray paint. To adapt that look, place one or two flowers near the upper side rather than across the opening. The arrangement stays decorative without blocking access or catching on long utensils.

Where to use the finished containers
- Kitchen: Keep dry spatulas, wooden spoons, whisks, or measuring tools within reach. Place the caddy away from the sink and stovetop so steam, splashes, and heat do not soften or stain the cardboard.
- Desk: Separate pens, pencils, scissors, rulers, and markers by type. A short cut makes small supplies visible instead of burying them at the bottom.
- Craft station: Store paintbrushes, knitting needles, glue tools, or rolls of washi tape. Grouping cans by task can make a small work surface easier to reset.
- Bathroom: A dry shelf can hold makeup brushes, combs, or hair tools that are completely cool and dry. Keep the tube away from shower spray and standing water.
- Entryway: Use a single can for sunglasses, dog-leash accessories, or spare pens, provided the contents are dry and not excessively heavy.
Common problems and practical fixes
The cut edge is uneven
Do not try to correct a large wobble by shaving aggressively with the knife; that can collapse the tube. Trim only loose fibers, then cover the rim with ribbon, paper, or a narrow fabric band. On a grouped caddy, orient the least even side toward the neighboring can.
Paint remains tacky
Leave the tube in a ventilated, dust-free area for longer and avoid adding glue while the surface is soft. Thick coats, cool temperatures, and high humidity commonly increase drying time. Follow the paint manufacturer’s cure guidance rather than relying on the project’s estimated schedule.
The decoration peels
Remove dust before gluing, use small overlapping sections, and press the seam until the adhesive cools. If the tube will be handled often, add a narrow top and bottom border to capture the wrap’s edges.
The can tips over
Reduce the load, move heavy items to a lower or wider container, add a non-slip pad, or attach the tube to a board. A taller cut increases capacity but also raises the center of gravity, so the base becomes more valuable as the contents get longer or heavier.

The board joint loosens
Empty the cans before attempting a repair. Scrape away loose glue, make sure both surfaces are clean and dry, then reapply hot glue around the bottom edge. Do not use the caddy until the joint has cooled and the cans remain upright under a light test load.
Cleaning and long-term care
Dust the outside with a dry or barely damp cloth and dry it immediately. Do not submerge the tube or scrub it under running water. If a spill reaches the cardboard, empty the holder, blot the moisture, and let it dry completely before reloading. Replace a can that has become soft, swollen, moldy, or structurally crushed; the cardboard is inexpensive to renew, and a weakened tube can dump its contents.
Disposal and recycling vary by location
Packaging rules depend on the country, local collection program, and the specific parts of the package. Pringles UK’s recycling guidance says the majority of the tube’s paper content can be recycled, while giving separate directions for the tube, plastic cap, and seal and asking people to check local instructions. That guidance is UK-specific and should not be treated as a universal rule. Before discarding a worn organizer, separate components only as your local program requests and check whether painted, glued, or heavily decorated cardboard is accepted.
Make the project fit your routine
The most useful version is the one sized for the objects you actually reach for. Start with one clean tube, test the height with your contents, and decorate only after the proportion feels right. Add a board when stability matters; leave it off when flexibility matters more. Paint, paper, trim, and flowers can all be swapped for leftovers, so the project stays a reuse exercise rather than a shopping list.
The finished result
With a controlled cut, a dry surface, and a finish suited to its location, an empty Pringles can becomes a lightweight organizer that costs little beyond optional craft supplies. Its limits are clear—dry storage only and no promise of water resistance—but its height and appearance are easy to tailor.
