The flagship Procreate app runs on iPad; there is no official Android, Windows, or Mac version. iPhone users can use the separate app Procreate Pocket, but it is not simply the iPad app on a smaller screen. If you do not want an iPad, choose a drawing app made for your device rather than relying on an unofficial Procreate download.
Which Procreate app works on which device?
“Procreate” refers to a small family of Apple apps, not one universal application. Procreate is the main raster illustration and painting app for iPad; Procreate Pocket is a separate drawing app for iPhone; and Procreate Dreams is a separate animation and motion-creation app for iPad. Dreams is not a desktop edition of Procreate.
| Device | Official Procreate option | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| iPad | Procreate | Check that the iPad supports the required iPadOS version. |
| iPhone | Procreate Pocket | Use Pocket for mobile sketches and illustrations; check that its separate workflow suits the work. |
| Android phone or tablet | No official Procreate app | Choose a native Android drawing app such as Clip Studio Paint, or evaluate other apps for your needs. |
| Windows PC or tablet | No native Procreate app | Consider Adobe Fresco, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, or desktop software paired with a pen display. |
| Mac | No native macOS edition of the flagship app | Use Mac-native art software or pair the Mac with an iPad. |
Procreate’s official product page presents the flagship as Procreate for iPad, and its App Store listing is for iPad. Its product lineup and support material do not list Android, Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS editions. Apple silicon does not turn the iPad app into a Mac app: app availability is determined by the developer and App Store listing.
What iPad do you need to run Procreate?
Procreate’s official FAQ listed version 5.4.12 and a minimum requirement of iPadOS 16.3 or newer when checked in August 2026. Requirements can change with app updates, so check the current Procreate FAQ and App Store compatibility information for your specific iPad before buying or updating.

Meeting the operating-system requirement only means the app can run; it does not mean every iPad handles every project equally well. Procreate says canvas limits depend on the iPad model and its total supported pixel capacity. Larger dimensions, more layers, complex brushes, animation frames, and 3D assets all demand more resources. The official canvas-size guidance explains why there is no universal maximum canvas or layer count. A modest iPad can suit sketches and moderate illustrations, while large print documents and many-layer projects call for more capable hardware. For screen-first work such as social posts, a smaller canvas may be entirely appropriate.
Before choosing hardware, match the iPad’s supported operating system, memory, display size, storage, and Apple Pencil compatibility to your work. Do not buy by model name alone or assume that a published layer count applies to your canvas, color settings, and app version.
Do you need an Apple Pencil?
No. Procreate can be used with touch input, but a compatible stylus is a more practical choice for sustained illustration. Pressure sensitivity, tilt, hover, double-tap, and other Pencil features depend on the specific Pencil and iPad pairing; verify compatibility for both devices rather than assuming every Pencil works with every iPad. Finger input may be enough for occasional marks or simple sketches, but serious illustration is easier with a compatible pressure-sensitive stylus.

Is Procreate Pocket the same as Procreate?
No. Pocket is a separate app designed for iPhone, with an interface and working area shaped around the smaller display. Its official page describes a mobile drawing and painting app, and its App Store listing includes features such as brushes, layers, masks, animation, time-lapse, and PSD import and export. That does not establish feature-for-feature parity with the iPad app. Check a particular brush, document, canvas, or production workflow before depending on Pocket as your primary tool.
Pocket makes sense for quick studies, small illustrations, concept sketches, social artwork, and animation tests when you already have an iPhone. It is less suited to work that depends on a large drawing surface, extensive interface space, or a particular iPad-only workflow.
How much does Procreate cost?
The U.S. App Store listings showed the following one-time app prices when checked in August 2026. Prices vary by country, currency, taxes, storefront, and promotions; check your own App Store before purchase.
| App | U.S. price seen | Platform and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Procreate | $12.99 | One-time purchase for iPad. |
| Procreate Pocket | $5.99 | One-time purchase for iPhone. |

What can Procreate do?
Procreate is built for raster illustration: its core strengths include sketching and painting with customizable brushes, layers, selections, masks, blend modes, and color adjustments. The iPad app also offers Animation Assist, Page Assist, time-lapse recording, PDF import, PSD export, and 3D painting on compatible devices. It can be used for concept art, lettering, hand-painted design, comics planning, and finished illustrations, depending on the needs of the job.
The app listing identifies a range of import and export formats, including PSD, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, PDF, GIF, MP4, OBJ, and USDZ. Availability and behavior depend on the feature and workflow; confirm a format against your intended handoff rather than treating every export as interchangeable. Procreate Dreams is the separate product to consider for animation and motion creation on iPad, not a desktop upgrade to Procreate.
Is Procreate worth buying an iPad for?
It can be, if you want portable, pen-first raster painting and prefer Procreate’s touch-oriented workflow and one-time app purchase. It is not a sound reason by itself to buy an iPad if your work depends on a desktop pipeline, vectors, or hardware you already own.

| You want to draw directly on a portable screen with Apple Pencil. | You already have a capable Windows pen display or tablet that suits your work. |
| Your work is mainly raster illustration, painting, lettering, sketching, or concept art. | You need Android support or want to avoid Apple hardware. |
| You value a streamlined touch interface and a one-time Procreate app purchase. | You rely on desktop multitasking, plug-ins, extensive keyboard-and-mouse workflows, or a specific desktop application. |
| You can hand work off through suitable exchange formats. | Your primary deliverables are vector logos, technical diagrams, page-layout documents, or production files requiring specialized desktop tools. |
Procreate can be part of professional work, but suitability depends on the deliverable and the client, printer, publisher, or studio pipeline. It supports layered files and common exchange formats, yet it is not a native desktop app, a full vector-design suite, a page-layout tool, or a general-purpose 3D modeler. Large canvases can sharply reduce available layers, and imported files may not preserve every feature or effect as expected. Test the actual handoff requirements before committing a production workflow.

Which alternatives make sense without an iPad?
Choose by platform and type of work, not by a generic “Procreate alternative” ranking. Verify current device availability, feature limits, and licensing before committing: prices and plans vary by region, device, edition, and storefront.
For Windows, Mac, Android, and cross-platform projects: Clip Studio Paint
Clip Studio Paint officially supports Windows, macOS, iPad, Android, and iPhone, making it one of the clearest options when work needs to move across those platforms. It is particularly relevant for comics, manga, webtoons, multi-page projects, and animation. Its official materials distinguish PRO and EX, with EX offering more advanced multi-page and animation capabilities; licensing options vary by grade and device. See platform and product information, PRO and EX differences, and current purchase options.
For Windows or iPad with Adobe-oriented workflows: Adobe Fresco
Adobe Fresco is worth considering if you want drawing on Windows as well as iPad or iPhone, or value Adobe-connected workflows. Adobe’s requirements page lists Windows support and identifies Windows 11 version 22000 or later in its current requirements information. Check Adobe’s current product information for device support, features, and account terms before choosing it. Adobe Fresco system requirements.
For free, open-source desktop painting: Krita
Krita is a desktop-oriented option for people prioritizing free, open-source painting software on Windows, macOS, or Linux. Its interface and workflow are not designed as a drop-in copy of Procreate’s iPad experience. Check Krita’s official site for current downloads and platform details: krita.org.

- A10 Fusion chip.
- Touch ID fingerprint sensor,

For logos and scalable artwork: choose vector-first software
If the goal is logos, scalable icons, technical graphics, or precise shape editing, use a vector-design application rather than choosing a raster painting app. Procreate can make clean lines and high-resolution images, but that does not make its artwork equivalent to editable vector geometry.
How should you move Procreate work to another app?
The native .procreate document is not a universal interchange format. Exporting a PSD, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, or PDF can make work usable elsewhere, but another app may not reproduce every layer effect, mask, font, brush, or blend mode exactly. For a desktop handoff, preserve the original and make a separate exchange copy.
- Keep the original
.procreatefile as your editable source. - Export a working PSD or TIFF when the next app needs layered editing; check that layers and effects survived the transfer.
- Save a flattened PNG or TIFF proof as a visual reference, especially when transparency or color matters.
- Back up important work outside the iPad rather than relying on a single device copy.
- Test fonts, masks, blend modes, imported brushes, animation, and any other production-critical feature before using the workflow for a deadline.
For a simple flattened image, PNG or JPEG may be enough; PDF can suit documents and proofs, while GIF or MP4 serves some animation exports. OBJ and USDZ relate to 3D workflows. Pick the format for the receiving application and intended output, not merely because it appears in an export menu.
Common compatibility problems
Procreate will not download on an iPad
- Confirm the exact iPad model and the iPadOS version it supports.
- Check the current App Store compatibility listing and whether the installed system meets the app’s requirement.
- Confirm that the App Store is using the intended Apple ID and storefront, and check available storage.
- Install a newer iPadOS release only if the iPad supports it; use the current FAQ for requirements rather than relying on an old compatibility claim.
An older iPad runs Procreate but struggles with large files
Compatibility is a lower bar than comfortable performance. Canvas dimensions, total pixels, layer count, brush complexity, animation frames, and 3D assets affect resource use. Reduce canvas dimensions or simplify the project when that suits the final output; otherwise, choose hardware with the workload in mind.
Can Procreate run on a Chromebook or emulator?
ChromeOS is not listed as a supported platform, and an emulator or remote-desktop workaround is not an official, reliable way to use Procreate. Input, performance, security, licensing, and file handling may all become obstacles. A native app for the device is the more dependable choice.
Can you use Procreate artwork commercially?
Commercial use of artwork you create is a legitimate use case, but do not infer that every included or imported element carries the same rights. Check the applicable license for brushes, fonts, model packs, stock material, and other third-party content you use. Procreate’s official FAQ is a starting point for the app’s commercial-use information; it does not replace the terms for individual assets.
