There is no single “economical” or universally lightweight Pryda truss. The practical choice depends on the span, design load, truss depth, timber grade, support layout, service penetrations, roof geometry and the current engineered drawings for your project. Pryda’s Longreach, Pryda Span and SpaceJoist systems can provide open floor zones and made-to-order roof solutions, but a span shown in an old guide or a product-page description is not a safe limit for a new build.

What Pryda floor and rafter truss systems do
Pryda supplies engineered timber-truss systems for floors and roofs. A floor truss uses top and bottom chords joined by webs, creating a deeper structural member than a conventional solid joist. The open-web geometry can leave routes for pipes, cables and ductwork inside the floor zone. Roof versions can be arranged as purlin trusses running parallel with the ridge or as rafter trusses, depending on the roof form and support conditions.
“Economical” normally means that the whole design uses material, labour, floor depth and support points efficiently; it does not mean the lightest member or the lowest purchase price in every situation. “Lightweight” can refer to timber construction and handling, but the actual mass changes with span, depth, chord size, timber grade, web arrangement, bracing and connection hardware. No independent comparison in the available technical material establishes that Pryda systems cost less or weigh less than every alternative.
Which Pryda system is being specified?
The names in Pryda literature are related but are not interchangeable product designs. The 2015 installation and specification guide covers Longreach and Pryda Span floor trusses and also discusses roof use. Current product pages describe Longreach and SpaceJoist as current floor solutions. Confirm the exact system, revision and availability with the project fabricator.

|---|---|---|
| Longreach | A fully engineered open-web timber floor-truss system with timber webs, configured for project loading, services and setdowns. | The layout must be engineered for the actual span, supports, wet areas, floor levels and service plan. |
| Pryda Span | Covered with Longreach in the historical installation/specification guide for floor truss and roof applications. | Use the current product and producer documentation rather than assuming the 2015 tables describe a current standard member. |
| SpaceJoist | A current project-fabricated floor solution with finished-height options including 360 mm and 400 mm; the page also lists other model/height combinations. | Designs can accommodate project-specific wet areas, setdowns, varying floor levels and different end types, subject to current specifications. |
Pryda’s Longreach page describes its system as having “exceptional structural capacity compared to other flooring systems” and says it can support higher loads without intermediate supports. That is Pryda’s product statement, not an independent comparative test, so the engineer’s calculations remain the authority.

How far can a Pryda floor truss span?
Span is a design result, not a product-wide promise. It is affected by truss depth, chord section and grade, spacing, imposed and dead loads, bearing details, openings, vibration criteria and the way the floor is restrained. A truss that works in one room may not work in another with the same nominal distance.
The historical Pryda installation/specification guide (October 2015) gives an example for residential floor loading shown as 1.5 kPa/1.8 kN at 450 mm truss centres. Its figures below are useful for understanding how depth and chord selection change the result; they are not current universal design limits.
| Chord specification | 250 mm depth | 300 mm depth | 350 mm depth | 400 mm depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 × 35 mm MGP10 top and bottom chords | 4,400 mm | 5,000 mm | 5,400 mm | 5,800 mm |
| 90 × 35 mm MGP10 top and bottom chords | 5,000 mm | 5,500 mm | 6,000 mm | 6,400 mm |
| 90 × 45 mm F17 hardwood top and bottom chords | 5,700 mm | 6,300 mm | 6,900 mm | 7,400 mm |
In other words, the guide lists 4,400–5,800 mm across the listed 250–400 mm depths for 70 × 35 mm MGP10 chords at 450 mm centres under the guide’s stated residential loading — Pryda Australia, 2015. For 90 × 35 mm MGP10 chords it lists 5,000–6,400 mm, and for 90 × 45 mm F17 hardwood chords 5,700–7,400 mm, under the same stated example conditions. These historical values must not be used to order members without a current design check.
The guide notes that increasing truss depth can improve span or stiffness at little extra cost and may allow lower chord-timber performance requirements. “Little extra cost” is a design observation, not an independent market price comparison; fabrication, transport, bracing, floor build-up and labour can change the total.

Why open webs help with plumbing and ductwork
An open-web floor truss creates planned voids through which services can pass, reducing the need to lower ceilings or build deep bulkheads. That can be particularly useful for bathrooms, kitchens, mechanical ventilation and long cable runs. SpaceJoist and Longreach documentation also allows project-specific wet areas, setdowns and varying floor levels when those requirements are included in the design.
Design the openings before fabrication
Large ducts, concentrated pipes, fire-rated penetrations and unusual routes may require a special web pattern, increased depth or a local support detail. Give the fabricator and engineer the reflected ceiling plan, plumbing layout, duct sizes, penetration locations, wet-area setdowns and any future service allowance before manufacture.
Do not cut or drill a delivered truss
Removing a web, notching a chord or enlarging an opening on site changes the engineered load path. Do not cut, drill, splice or relocate members unless the truss designer issues a written, project-specific repair or redesign. A small-looking alteration can affect strength, vibration, bearing and fire or acoustic details.
Pryda roof trusses: purlins and rafters
Pryda’s roof Longreach and Span products can be used as purlins or rafters. A purlin truss generally runs parallel to the ridge and supports rafters or roof sheeting; a rafter truss follows the roof slope and transfers loads to its bearings. The appropriate arrangement depends on roof pitch, support lines, purlins or battens, sheeting type, ceiling loads and the intended load path.

Roof products are generally made to order. The guide highlights stability and wind-uplift tie-down requirements, which can govern bracing and connections even when gravity loads appear modest. Confirm temporary erection bracing, permanent restraint, bearing lengths, tie-down anchors and the roof-sheeting arrangement in the producer documentation. A floor-truss detail cannot simply be reused as a roof detail.
How to specify a system for a real project
- Define the geometry. Record clear span, bearing locations, overall floor or roof dimensions, level changes, cantilevers, stair openings and penetrations.
- State the loads. Identify occupancy, partitions, finishes, wet-area build-ups, ceilings, storage, mechanical equipment, roof coverings, snow or wind actions where applicable, and any point loads.
- Coordinate services. Supply plumbing, electrical, duct and fire-service routes before the truss layout is finalised. Mark oversized or concentrated services that cannot use a standard web opening.
- Select depth and material through engineering. The designer balances stiffness, vibration, strength, available headroom, chord section, timber grade, spacing and connection requirements. Do not choose a depth from the historical table alone.
- Check supports and connections. Verify bearings, walls, beams, lintels, hangers, blocking, lateral restraint and uplift ties. Pryda joist hangers are documented for floor or roof truss support connections, but the correct hanger and its design capacity must be taken from the current technical data and project drawings.
- Review the issued package. Before fabrication, check truss marks, orientation, setdowns, service openings, end types, bracing notes, fixing schedules and installation tolerances against the architectural and engineering drawings.
- Install to the producer’s instructions. Protect members during handling, provide specified temporary and permanent bracing, seat every bearing correctly and obtain approval before any field change.
Installation details that affect performance
Trusses are efficient only when the load reaches the supports as designed. Bearing walls or beams must be straight, level and in the specified locations. Missing blocking, inadequate lateral restraint, incorrectly positioned hangers or an omitted tie-down can invalidate the design even if every timber member is the correct size.
Use the supplied layout and producer documentation for truss spacing, orientation, blocking, strongbacks, bracing, fasteners and sequencing. Keep members dry and avoid dragging them across edges or stacking them where they can bow. For roof work, follow the erection sequence so unrestrained trusses are not exposed to wind before permanent bracing and sheeting are installed.

Pryda’s FastFix page calls its screw-based system “a safer, faster, easier and fully compliant screw-based solution.” That is vendor language. Fastener type, spacing, edge distances and substrate still have to match the current project design; a branded screw system is not a substitute for the connection schedule.

What “economical” should mean in a quote
Ask for a whole-project comparison, not only a per-truss price. A useful quotation separates fabrication, delivery, unloading, cranage or manual handling, temporary and permanent bracing, hangers and other connectors, installation labour, floor or roof sheeting, and any redesign caused by late service changes.
Deeper trusses can sometimes span farther or reduce intermediate supports, which may simplify the plan below. They can also increase floor-zone depth, affect stairs and door heights, require longer bracing or alter the amount of ceiling space. A shallower option may cost more in beams, posts or transfer details. The economical answer is the option with the best compliant outcome for the complete structure, not automatically the member with the smallest timber volume.
Where to obtain a Pryda quote and design
Pryda’s guide and Longreach product information direct project enquiries to a preferred Pryda fabricator. The fabricator needs the project location, drawings, clear spans, support plan, loads, floor or roof build-up, service requirements, desired finished levels and construction schedule. Ask which current system, specification revision and producer statement will accompany the quote.
Request written confirmation of inclusions and exclusions: engineering, shop drawings, revisions, delivery, site measures, bracing, hangers, fasteners, crane access and any allowance for wet-area setdowns or special openings. Availability and lead times vary by fabricator and region, so treat a verbal indication as provisional until the issued quotation and design are reviewed.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using the 2015 span table as a span certificate: have the current engineer check loads, deflection, vibration, supports and code requirements.
- Calling a system lightweight without a mass schedule: ask for member weights and handling requirements for the actual design if lifting or labour is critical.
- Adding a duct after fabrication: return the revised route to the designer; never cut a chord or web on site.
- Ignoring point loads: roof beams, masonry partitions, baths, tanks and plant may need special trusses or support details.
- Choosing hangers by name only: match the hanger model, fasteners, substrate and capacity to the connection schedule.
- Underestimating roof uplift: confirm tie-down and bracing for the site’s wind classification and roof geometry.
- Comparing only purchase prices: include supports, labour, service coordination, transport, temporary works and rework in the economic assessment.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the project using Longreach, Pryda Span, SpaceJoist or another current Pryda configuration?
- Are span, loads, support lines, truss depth and spacing stated on current engineered drawings?
- Are wet areas, setdowns, floor-level changes, stairs and large service routes coordinated before fabrication?
- Does the package specify bearings, hangers, bracing, restraint, fasteners and roof uplift ties?
- Has the fabricator confirmed the current specification, availability, delivery scope and quotation inclusions?
- Is every proposed site change referred back to the truss designer in writing?
