At Pulteney Grammar School’s middle-school redevelopment in Adelaide, South Australia, automated louvres occupy most of the western facade. Opening the motorized blades provides a controllable route for outside air while the clear sections preserve views across the quadrangle.

The installation is a custom architectural facade rather than a standard residential window package. Safetyline Jalousie reports 44 large louvre units using 6.38 mm clear laminate louvres and LDF100 drives, combined with custom flat-blade aluminium elements in blue and green finishes. The project’s documented purpose is functional and visual; no published study establishes a measured energy, indoor-air-quality or learning benefit for this particular school.

What project do the automated louvres belong to?

The facade is part of Pulteney Grammar School’s middle-school redevelopment in Adelaide. RCP’s December 2018 newsletter says the practice managed the $8.3 million redevelopment from concept design through construction completion. RCP describes the completed middle-school facilities as light, airy and colourful, with flexible classrooms and informal settings for social interaction. It also reports that the work finished on time and well under budget.

The newsletter does not establish a separate construction completion date; December 2018 is the issue date, not necessarily the handover date. The $8.3 million figure applies to the broader middle-school facilities redevelopment, not to the louvre package alone.

RCP identifies the western elevation as being largely made up of automated louvres. Safetyline Jalousie’s project description, published by SPEC-NET, gives the component and construction information for that facade. Those details are supplier-reported specifications, so they should not be read as independent measurements or as a performance test.

How louvres create both ventilation and views

A louvre facade uses a series of blades that pivot about their frames. When the blades open, gaps between them create a large ventilation path; when they close, the blades reduce the opening and provide a more weather-protective screen. A motorized drive allows the opening position to be changed without manually reaching each high-level panel.

At Pulteney, the clear laminate elements maintain a visual connection to the quadrangle even though the facade is divided into many blades. The project descriptions associate the automated operation with ventilation and the outward view, but they do not publish the control sequence, opening angles, sensor package, airflow rate or indoor-air-quality readings. It is therefore accurate to describe the facade as enabling those functions, not to promise a quantified ventilation improvement.

“The majority of the western façade is made up of automated louvres allowing for ventilation and views over the scenic quadrangle.”

In practical use, a school operator could open blades to admit air during suitable conditions and close them when the space needs a tighter enclosure. The available project material does not say whether staff, a building-management system, timers or local switches issue those commands. Any description of automatic scheduling or sensor-based control would go beyond the documented evidence.

Published dimensions and components

Safetyline Jalousie reports the following system characteristics for the Pulteney facade:

Item Reported specification What the figure represents
Number of units 44 Units supplied for the project, according to the supplier
Listed unit height 3090 mm Supplier-reported dimension
Listed unit width 1218 mm Supplier-reported dimension
Clear louvre material 6.38 mm clear laminate Glazed louvre elements described by the supplier
Drive LDF100 Motorized drive identified in the project description

The description does not state whether the listed height and width apply identically to every one of the 44 units or whether they are nominal dimensions for the supplied module. It also does not provide drive torque, speed, electrical data, control voltage, acoustic ratings, wind-load limits or replacement intervals. Those items would need to be confirmed in construction or operations documentation before a similar facade is specified.

A mixed glass-and-aluminium pattern, not a uniform window wall

The facade was designed as a visual composition. Safetyline describes randomly placed clear glass louvres alongside custom flat-blade aluminium louvres. The aluminium blades were powder-coated in blue and green hues. Together, the clear and opaque pieces create a varied pattern rather than a repetitive bank of identical windows.

The supplier says that this arrangement filters natural light into a second-floor lounge. “Filters” here describes the visual and daylight effect of the pattern; no illuminance measurements or glare study for the installed lounge are published in the reviewed project material. The colour treatment also ties the facade to the school’s brief for colourful learning environments without requiring every opening to be transparent.

Because clear and aluminium blades behave differently, the composition also gives designers several ways to balance outlook, privacy and solar exposure. The sources do not document the percentage of clear area, blade spacing, glass tint, coating colour codes or the orientation of individual blades, so those cannot be inferred from the photographs or the general project description.

What the facade contributes to the school redevelopment

RCP presents the louvre elevation as one part of a broader middle-school strategy. The redevelopment included flexible classrooms and informal social settings, with an overall aim of making the learning spaces feel light, airy and colourful. The western facade’s visual connection to the quadrangle supports that spatial brief: students and staff can remain aware of the outdoor setting while using an enclosed school building.

The louvres should not be treated as the sole source of the project’s reported success. RCP’s statements about on-time, well-under-budget delivery and the quality of the learning spaces refer to the redevelopment as a whole. No separate evaluation attributes attendance, concentration, health, comfort or educational outcomes to the automated facade.

Safety issues that must be resolved on a school facade

High-level moving blades introduce safety questions that are less prominent in a conventional fixed window. Safetyline’s project description says fall-prevention and impact concerns were considered for the Pulteney installation. It does not publish the selected barriers, interlocks, impact classification, testing regime or maintenance access method.

For a new school project, the design team would normally document at least these decisions before fabrication:

  • How the glazing and aluminium blades resist foreseeable impact in a busy student environment.
  • Where motors, linkages and control panels can be reached safely for inspection.
  • How movement is stopped if a person, object or maintenance tool enters the blade path.
  • Which manual override is available during a power failure, fire event or control-system fault.
  • How cleaning, replacement and inspection can occur without exposing workers or students to an unprotected edge.

The Pulteney sources confirm that these concerns were part of the design conversation, but they do not establish compliance with a particular Australian standard. A project team should obtain the applicable code and certification documents for its own site rather than assume that the Pulteney solution transfers unchanged.

What is known—and not known—about performance

The documented evidence supports a functional description: the western facade uses motorized louvres, and the project sources connect them with ventilation and quadrangle views. It supports the reported dimensions, materials, finish and drive identification listed above.

It does not support numerical claims about:

  • air changes per hour or measured cross-ventilation;
  • energy use, cooling-load reduction or greenhouse-gas savings;
  • indoor temperature, humidity or carbon-dioxide levels;
  • daylight autonomy, glare reduction or acoustic performance;
  • student health, concentration or learning outcomes;
  • wind, rain or smoke-exhaust performance at this installation.

No named study or independent test for those outcomes appears in the cited project material. Treating the louvres as an enabling design feature, rather than as proof of a particular performance result, keeps the description within the evidence.

How this custom facade differs from other automated louvre products

Automated louvres are a product category, not a single standardized system. The Pulteney installation combines a bespoke facade pattern with specific drives and materials. A separate manufacturer example, Breezway’s Powerlouvre system, describes integration with automated building-management systems. That category-level claim does not show that Pulteney used Breezway products or that the LDF100 drives at the school had building-management integration.

Comparison point Pulteney Grammar facade Separate automated window category example
Primary setting Custom institutional facade on a school redevelopment Window-system product described for broader building applications
Documented purpose Ventilation and views over the quadrangle Automated ventilation and potential control-system integration, as stated by that manufacturer
Drive information LDF100 drives reported by Safetyline Jalousie Different product-specific hardware; not evidence about Pulteney
Facade appearance Random clear laminate and coloured flat-blade aluminium elements Product configuration depends on the selected window system
Building-management connection Not stated in the Pulteney project description Described by the separate manufacturer for its own system
Safety details Fall-prevention and impact concerns reported as considered; detailed provisions not stated Must be checked in that product’s own documentation

This distinction matters during procurement. A control feature advertised for one window system cannot be assumed to exist in a custom facade simply because both use motors.

Checklist for specifying a similar school installation

Teams planning a comparable project can turn the Pulteney example into a disciplined specification process:

  1. Set the room objective. Decide whether the facade is primarily for fresh-air ventilation, visual connection, daylight modulation, smoke control or a combination. Record which outcomes will be measured.
  2. Map the facade conditions. Document orientation, prevailing winds, adjacent buildings, quadrangle use, solar exposure and the height of every opening.
  3. Choose the blade mix. Establish the proportion of clear, translucent and opaque elements, the desired view lines and the colour or finish schedule.
  4. Define the operating envelope. State when blades may open, what weather conditions require closure and who can override automatic commands.
  5. Coordinate structure and services. Confirm module sizes, loads, drainage, electrical supplies, access panels and interfaces with the building-management system, if one is intended.
  6. Design for student safety. Resolve fall protection, impact resistance, pinch points, emergency stopping and maintenance access before approving shop drawings.
  7. Commission and record. Test every unit, label drives and controls, document fault responses and give facilities staff a maintenance schedule.
  8. Verify the claimed benefit. If ventilation or daylight is a project objective, collect post-occupancy readings rather than relying on the presence of automation as proof.

Cost and procurement context

The only published cost in the project material is RCP’s $8.3 million value for the complete middle-school redevelopment. Neither the louvre package price nor a per-unit cost is stated. The 44-unit count and the 3090 mm by 1218 mm listed dimensions are useful for early scope discussions, but they are not a quotation.

A current tender would also need updated pricing for glazing, aluminium fabrication, powder coating, motors, controls, access equipment, electrical work, commissioning and long-term maintenance. Availability, code requirements and supplier details can change after the 2018 RCP newsletter and the supplier’s undated project description, so a new project should request current technical and commercial schedules.

Maintenance questions facilities teams should ask

Moving facade components need a maintenance plan that a fixed window may not. Before handover, facilities staff should obtain the drive manual, lubrication or inspection requirements, replacement-part information, control-system backup procedure and safe cleaning method. They should also know how to identify a failed unit without leaving a blade in an unsafe position.

The project description names the LDF100 drive but does not state service intervals or expected life. Those values must come from the equipment documentation supplied for the installed system. Keeping a register of the 44 units, their locations and fault history will make future repairs more predictable, especially where clear and coloured blades have different replacement specifications.

Bottom line on the Pulteney approach

Pulteney Grammar’s western facade demonstrates how a school can make ventilation and an outdoor outlook part of one architectural element. Its documented recipe is specific: a custom mix of clear laminate and coloured aluminium louvres, motorized by LDF100 drives, arranged across 44 reported units. The evidence supports the design intent and supplied specifications, while leaving control logic and measured building performance unstated. For other schools, the transferable lesson is to pair the visual ambition with explicit safety, controls, commissioning and post-occupancy verification.
