On a Handi Quilter Moxie, ruler work starts with a stable ruler base, a suitable ruler foot and a ruler made for longarm quilting. Use only 1/4-inch-thick machine-quilting rulers: the Moxie manual warns that thinner rotary-cutting rulers can slip under the hopping foot. Keep the ruler flat and securely controlled as you stitch.

Install the ruler base
Use the Moxie Steady-Fit Ruler Base to give the ruler a stable surface to rest on. The Moxie manual describes the base as a place to support rulers and templates; do not attempt ruler work without it.

Choose the ruler foot
The lesson recommends the Handi Quilter Sure Foot for ruler work. Its higher profile provides a bumper along the ruler edge, helping keep the ruler from slipping beneath the foot. The presenter explains that the standard foot has a lower profile and could potentially slip under a ruler. Check that the foot is compatible with your particular Moxie setup.

Choose a machine-quilting ruler
Use a ruler that is 1/4 inch thick. The manual specifically warns against rotary-cutting rulers, which are too thin and may slip under the hopping foot. Choose a straight-edge ruler for guided straight lines or a stitch-in-the-ditch ruler whose tabs can align against a seam.
How to stitch a straight line with a ruler
- Prepare the machine. Fit the Steady-Fit Ruler Base and Sure Foot, and place a compatible 1/4-inch-thick quilting ruler on the base.
- Position the ruler. Align its straight edge with the path you want to quilt. Keep it flat against the base and within comfortable reach.
- Establish control before stitching. Use gentle three-point pressure between the foot, machine, ruler and ruler base. Quilt only along the portion of the ruler you can hold securely.
- Guide the machine along the edge. Keep the ruler steady against the foot as you move the machine to stitch the line. Maintain control of both the ruler and the machine throughout the stitch path.
- Reposition as needed. If the ruler is no longer securely held or the next section is out of reach, stop and move your hand or reposition the ruler before continuing.
How to stitch in the ditch
For a seam-following path, use a stitch-in-the-ditch ruler with tabs designed to line up against the seam. Set the tabs against the seam, then guide the ruler so the machine follows the intended path. In the April 20, 2021 tutorial, presenter Beth explains that the needle sits 1/4 inch from the edge of the foot; aligning the ruler tabs to the seam helps position the stitching in the ditch. That measurement is the presenter’s explanation of the demonstrated setup, not an independent measurement.

Safety and control checks
- Use only rulers that are 1/4 inch thick; do not substitute thin rotary-cutting rulers.
- Keep the ruler flat on the ruler base and securely controlled. Do not quilt a section that you cannot hold securely.
- Apply gentle three-point pressure among the foot, machine, ruler and ruler base; reposition your hand or the ruler when needed to maintain control.
- Check the compatibility of the ruler base and foot with your specific Moxie configuration before buying or installing them.
