Qurban is the Eid al-Adha animal sacrifice offered as an act of worship and devotion to God. It is also called kurban, udhiyah, or Qurbani in different languages and communities. Its religious status, eligible animals, timing, and meat-distribution rules depend on the authority or school a person follows, so no single set of details should be treated as universal.
What does Qurban mean?
Qurban refers to an animal sacrifice made as worship in connection with Eid al-Adha. Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) describes its purpose as drawing closer to Allah; Indonesia’s South Sulawesi Council of Ulama (MUI) likewise connects the term with drawing near to God. The observance is associated with Eid al-Adha, the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, and the following Tashriq days.

Is Qurban obligatory or recommended?
The cited authorities do not give one uniform ruling. JAKIM describes Qurban as sunat muakkadah, a strongly emphasized Sunnah, and says that leaving it is discouraged for those able to afford it. The office of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani describes the Eid sacrifice as an emphasized recommended act for those who can afford it. By contrast, Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) says sacrifice is binding for a Muslim who meets its stated conditions, including sound mind, maturity, sufficient wealth beyond basic needs and debts, and residence rather than travel.

Which animals qualify, and what age must they be?
Animal eligibility and minimum ages are also authority-specific. The examples below reflect what the named sources state; they should not be combined into a universal rule.

Age is only one part of eligibility. Check the authority you follow for the applicable animal condition and other requirements as well as the age threshold.

The observance is tied to Eid al-Adha and the Tashriq days, but the precise start and end of the valid period vary among the cited guidance. Diyanet says slaughter begins after the Eid prayer and continues until sunset on the third day of Eid; it notes that the Shafi‘i school permits sacrifice until sunset on the fourth day. JAKIM and MUI describe the period as Eid al-Adha and the three Tashriq days. Sistani’s guidance distinguishes between four days for those in Mina and three days elsewhere, with a recommended precaution favoring earlier performance.
The lunar date and Eid prayer time are local and change from year to year. Confirm the date and permitted slaughter window with a local religious authority rather than relying on a fixed Gregorian date.
Can someone appoint an organization to perform Qurban?
Delegation can be arranged, but it should be explicit. Diyanet says the person offering the sacrifice must authorize the agent and that the animal should be sacrificed with that person’s intention. Where an organization acts as an intermediary, Diyanet advises that its authorization cover the agreed tasks—such as purchase, slaughter, and distribution—and that the organization stay within the consent it was given. JAKIM recognizes agency-managed arrangements, including online services, while emphasizing attention to religious requirements and the organizer’s duty to act as a trustee rather than prioritize profit alone.

Checks to make before authorizing a service
- Confirm what you are authorizing: purchase of the animal, the sacrifice, meat distribution, or all of these.
- Ask how the service will meet the animal, timing, and intention requirements of the authority you follow.
- Check where the meat will go and whether that matches the arrangement you agreed to.
- Under Diyanet’s guidance, operational fees should be paid separately rather than deducted from the animal’s meat, hide, or offal.
How should Qurban meat be distributed?
Distribution guidance differs, so a division into thirds should not be presented as a universal requirement. Sistani says it is permissible to keep a third for oneself or one’s family and give another third as a gift, with a recommended precaution to give the remaining third to poor Muslims. Jordan’s General Iftaa Department, in a ruling dated 30 March 2026, says a portion of voluntary sacrifice meat should go to poor people and recommends dividing it into thirds: one-third for the household, one-third as charity to the poor, and one-third as gifts to friends and neighbors, including those who are wealthy. That is the Department’s ruling, not a statement of universal agreement.
