A Ramadan lantern, known in Arabic as a fanous (plural: fawanis), is a lantern associated with Ramadan celebrations, especially in Egypt. It has shifted from a practical night light to a festive object and, today, a familiar seasonal decoration. Traditional stories connect it to Fatimid-era Cairo, but accounts differ, so no single origin story should be treated as settled history.
What is a Ramadan lantern?
A fanous is a lantern used to mark Ramadan. The Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mediterranean Countries describes the tradition as significant in Egypt and traces a change in its role: it was carried as a light in the streets at night, became a festive object for children, and is now widely used as decoration in homes, hotels, and workplaces.
The object’s materials and lighting changed too. Historical examples are described as engraved copper lanterns lit by candles. Tin later replaced copper in part because it was lighter and less expensive. Modern decorative versions may use electric bulbs or batteries, including battery-powered LEDs.

What is the history of the Ramadan lantern?
Accounts connect the custom to Fatimid-era Cairo, but they do not establish one definitive origin. Egypt’s General Organization for Cultural Palaces recounts several explanations: one popular tradition says children carried lanterns when the Fatimid caliph went out to sight the Ramadan crescent; another links lanterns to the ruler’s arrival in Cairo. Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf accounts also present multiple narratives and discuss earlier uses and practices. These are best understood as traditions and historical explanations, not as a proven single starting point.
What is clearer in the heritage register is how the lantern’s use developed: from a source of light carried outdoors, to a children’s festive object, and then to a widely used Ramadan decoration. Its current decorative role is not limited to homes; the register also names hotels and firms.

How do traditional and modern fanous lanterns differ?
- Traditional forms: Historical descriptions emphasize engraved copper, later lighter and less expensive tin, and candlelight.
- Modern decorative forms: Electric bulbs and batteries are common lighting options. Contemporary examples include metal-and-glass LED lanterns as well as metal candle lanterns; a retail catalog illustrates these styles, but does not establish their availability or quality elsewhere.
- Purpose: Some lanterns are intended as stationary seasonal decorations; others are designed to be carried. A decorative lantern should not automatically be assumed suitable for a child to carry or for use with an open flame.
How do I choose a Ramadan lantern?
Start with how and where it will be used. For a tabletop or floor decoration, prioritize stable placement and a light source suited to the room. For a lantern a child may carry, check its age guidance, construction, and whether it uses a real flame. The phrase “Ramadan lantern” is the most direct product search; “fanous lantern” is a useful alternative.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Light source | Battery LED or other electric lighting avoids an open flame. If the lantern uses a real candle, confirm it is designed for candle use and can hold the candle securely. |
| Materials and workmanship | Look at whether the lantern is made from metal, colored glass, plastic, or a mix, and inspect joins and finish. Treat “handmade” or artisan-made claims as unverified unless the seller documents them. |
| Size and purpose | Choose a scale and handle suitable for its intended place: tabletop, floor, gift, or child-carried use. A display lantern and a portable lantern may have different handling needs. |
| Safety and handling | Check stability, sharp edges, small detachable parts, battery access, and the product’s age suitability. Follow the maker’s instructions and local product-safety rules. |
How can you use a lantern safely?
For candle-like light without a flame, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service recommends battery-operated LED candles as the safest option and advises keeping batteries inaccessible to children and pets. If using a real candle, use a suitable holder, keep it away from flammable items, and extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep.
