RawTherapee 5.11, released August 25, 2024, was a substantial compatibility and workflow update—not a complete reinvention of RAW editing. Its most consequential change was adding LibRaw as an alternative RAW decoder, alongside broader camera support, JPEG XL opening, improved Selective Editing, XMP synchronization, and better lens-correction handling. Because newer releases now exist, use the official RawTherapee download page to choose the current recommended build rather than treating 5.11 as the latest version.
What RawTherapee 5.11 changed
RawTherapee is a free, open-source RAW developer for Windows, macOS, and Linux, released under the GPLv3. It specializes in non-destructive RAW processing—demosaicing, exposure, tone, color, sharpening, noise reduction, and export—rather than serving as a Photoshop-style raster editor or a Lightroom-style cloud catalog.
Version 5.11 launched on August 25, 2024. RawTherapee 5.12 followed on May 28, 2025, and the project’s GitHub currently displays a 5.13 artifact dated July 26, 2026. Check the main project site and official releases page before installing.

Starting with 5.11, RawTherapee can use LibRaw to read RAW files. Official packages include an enhanced LibRaw build, while RawTherapee can fall back to its enhanced dcraw-based reader when LibRaw cannot read a file.

This primarily improves compatibility with some newer cameras and formats, including Sony lossless-compressed RAW. It does not guarantee better image quality. The decoder can influence initial color, white balance, highlight recovery, noise, demosaicing, and embedded profiles. The project warns that some files may render more successfully with the older path. You can disable LibRaw in Preferences when troubleshooting, and unofficial packages may bundle a different LibRaw version.
Expanded camera and format support
Release notes list support or improvements for cameras including:
- Fujifilm: GFX 100, GFX 100S, GFX 100 II, and X-H2S
- Nikon: Z8, Z9, and Z f
- OM Digital Solutions: TG-7
- Panasonic: G9 II, GH5 II, GH6, S5 II, and S5 IIX
- Sony: A1, A6700, A7CR, A7R IV, A7R V, and A9 III
There is also support for Panasonic 12-bit v6 and v8 RAW files, Fujifilm lossy-compressed RAW, JPEG XL images, and additional camera-specific profiles and corrections. A camera listed in release notes is not a promise that every bit depth, compression mode, firmware version, or third-party package will behave identically. Test original files from your own camera.
Selective Editing becomes more capable
RawTherapee renamed Local Adjustments to Selective Editing. Version 5.11 adds a global mode for applying adjustments uniformly, ΔE preview buttons for most sub-tools, per-tool graduated-filter feathering, a simpler basic mode, additional CAM16 tone mappers, black-and-white mode, and highlight attenuation. These changes make localized color, tone, and contrast work more controllable, although the interface remains aimed at photographers who want detailed manual control rather than one-click results.
Metadata, lens corrections, and browsing
- XMP synchronization: Ratings and color labels can be synchronized with XMP sidecars, and saved images receive an EXIF modified date-time.
- Embedded lens corrections: Compatible Fujifilm, Olympus/OM Digital Solutions, Sony, and DNG files can use corrections stored in metadata. OM files specifically provide distortion and chromatic-aberration corrections.
- File browser: An option shows images in subfolders.
- Export: More path-template specifiers and a preview of the selected image’s export path.
- Display: Configurable maximum editor zoom and real HiDPI support replace pseudo-HiDPI.
- Other: A wider white-balance Tint range and JPEG XL opening support.
XMP support improves mixed-application workflows, but it is not full Lightroom or Capture One catalog compatibility. RawTherapee processing settings remain its own workflow data.
Installation and upgrade guidance
Windows
- Download the official 64-bit installer.
- Compare its SHA-256 checksum with the value published on the 5.11 release page if security or deployment matters.
- Install over the existing copy or alongside it according to your workflow.
- Back up profiles and sidecars, then open representative files from every camera before removing the older build.
Linux
Use your distribution’s package manager when it provides a suitable build. If not, the official AppImage can be launched with:

./RawTherapee_5.11.AppImage
If it fails, verify the executable bit, try the distribution package, and check GTK, libraries, GPU/display configuration, and bundled dependencies. Package sources may contain different LibRaw versions.

The 5.11 build requires macOS Monterey 12.3 or newer. Unzip the archive, open the DMG, and drag RawTherapee.app to /Applications. The project says it may refuse to start elsewhere. Keep the app name unchanged. If you use the optional command-line interface, place rawtherapee-cli somewhere in your PATH.
What to back up—and what can change
Before a major upgrade, copy your .pp3 processing profiles, XMP sidecars, custom presets, camera and lens profiles, export settings, and configuration or theme files. Do not assume every setting migrates perfectly.
Different decoder defaults can make an existing RAW look different after upgrading. Compare the same file with the same processing profile, check whether LibRaw is enabled, and retain the previous installation until your important jobs are verified.
Is RawTherapee a Lightroom alternative?
| Need | RawTherapee 5.11 | Lightroom |
|---|---|---|
| Cost and licensing | Free, open source, local-first | Subscription; Adobe’s US 1TB plan is listed at $14.99/month annual-billed monthly, $149.99/year prepaid, or $22.49 month-to-month (pricing varies by country) |
| RAW control | Very deep manual controls | Broad, streamlined tools and automation |
| Catalog and sync | Browsing, ratings, labels, queues; no equivalent cloud catalog | Mature catalog, cloud synchronization, and mobile workflow |
| Operating systems | Windows, macOS, Linux | Commercial desktop, mobile, and web ecosystem |
| Learning curve | Steep but highly configurable | Generally easier for beginners |
RawTherapee is a strong choice if you want open-source software, no subscription, Linux support, local files, and granular control. It is a weaker fit if you need cloud synchronization, a polished library-first workflow, integrated AI masking or generative tools, or seamless commercial support.

darktable is the closest open-source comparison: it emphasizes a database-oriented management workflow, while RawTherapee leans toward a detailed file-browser and processing-queue model. Neither should be declared universally superior without controlled testing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should install it?
Install or evaluate 5.11 when you need its specific camera or decoder improvements, especially on an older system or in a controlled legacy workflow. For a new installation in 2026, start with the current official release and consult 5.11’s notes if you are diagnosing decoder behavior or maintaining an older project.
Commercial alternatives address different gaps: Lightroom for cataloging and synchronization, DxO PhotoLab 9 for lens modules, denoising, and a perpetual-license model, and ON1 Photo RAW for an all-in-one editor with management, effects, and AI tools. Paid does not automatically mean better; it means a different workflow and support model.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is RawTherapee 5.11 still the latest version?
No. It launched on August 25, 2024. RawTherapee’s website lists 5.12, and GitHub displays a 5.13 artifact dated July 26, 2026. Check the official download page for the build currently recommended.
Does LibRaw guarantee better RAW image quality?
No. LibRaw mainly changes file compatibility and decoding. Rendering can differ by camera, RAW mode, package, and decoder; some files may work better with RawTherapee’s enhanced dcraw path.
Will RawTherapee replace Lightroom completely?
It can replace Lightroom for many RAW-development tasks, especially when local processing and zero subscription cost matter. It does not reproduce Lightroom’s full cloud catalog, synchronization, mobile ecosystem, or commercial support.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: RawTherapee 5.11 was a meaningful compatibility milestone, chiefly because of LibRaw and expanded camera support. Treat it as an earlier release, test your own RAW files and decoder behavior, and download the current official version unless you specifically need 5.11.
