Red Hat Coloring Books: All 3 is an illustrated educational PDF with two coloring-book sections—one about SELinux and one about containers—followed by a superhero-style introduction to container tools. The PDF hosted on the Linux Foundation event website credits Dan Walsh as writer and Máirín Duffy as illustrator for the SELinux and container sections.
What are the three sections about?
- SELinux: An illustrated explanation of access controls, using cats, dogs and food labels to introduce security policy and labeling.
- Containers: A housing analogy for understanding how applications can run on physical machines, virtual machines and containers, including services that share a host.
- Container tools: Superhero-style profiles that introduce five projects and tools: Podman, Buildah, Skopeo, CRI-O and OpenShift.
The PDF presents these topics as an educational illustration, not as a current product comparison or a set of measured performance or security results.
What does the SELinux coloring book explain?
Policy and type enforcement
The section introduces SELinux policy and type enforcement through labeled examples. In its scenarios, access is denied unless the applicable policy and labels allow it.
MCS categories and MLS levels
It then distinguishes two additional ways of describing access. Multi Category Security (MCS) adds category matching: in the examples, access is further constrained by whether the relevant categories match. Multi Level Security (MLS) is introduced separately, using security levels to model access.

How does the container section compare deployment approaches?
Rather than presenting benchmark results, the illustrations use housing as a way to think about trade-offs between physical machines, virtual machines, containers and co-located services. The comparison is qualitative; the PDF gives no measured startup times, resource figures or security statistics.
| Question | What the PDF uses the analogy to explain |
|---|---|
| How separated are workloads? | Different approaches provide different degrees and forms of separation. |
| How are resources shared? | The examples contrast dedicated environments with arrangements in which workloads share a host or resources. |
| How quickly can an application start? | Startup speed is presented as a trade-off among deployment approaches, not quantified. |
| What does maintenance involve? | The analogy draws attention to differing maintenance burdens. |
| What support model applies? | Support is another point of contrast in the illustrations; the PDF does not establish current support terms for products or projects. |
The section organizes its discussion around six topics: namespaces, resource control, security, images, community standards and management. These headings help frame the concepts, but the document should not be treated as an up-to-date comparison of container platforms.

Which container tools appear in the final section?
The character profiles introduce the tools in the terms used by the PDF:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Podman: described as a daemonless tool for developing and running containers.
- Buildah: described as a container-image builder.
- Skopeo: described as a tool for inspecting and copying images.
- CRI-O: described as a runtime for Kubernetes.
- OpenShift: described as a container application platform.
These are the PDF’s concise introductions, not a complete account of current capabilities. For present-day details, consult each project’s current documentation.
