Kristi Linauer’s May 9, 2025 progress report records a bedroom-suite floor roughly halfway through sanding, with the 36-grit drum-sander work finished in the areas described and 36-grit edge sanding about halfway complete. The project was removing a dark finish from red oak so the suite could receive a lighter-looking finish.
The account is useful as a homeowner’s project record, not as a universal refinishing specification. It shows how the work was divided between a drum sander, an edge sander and hand scraping, then how repairs and a white-pigmented sealer were expected to affect the final appearance.

What the May 9, 2025 report documents
Linauer was working on the bedroom suite in her Waco-area home. Her post, “Bedroom Suite Progress Report – Sanding The Red Oak Hardwood Flooring (Plus, A Preview Of My Blue Walk-In Closet With Light Wood Floors)”, is a progress update rather than a finished-floor reveal or a complete do-it-yourself manual.
Her “about halfway” description is a personal estimate of the project’s progress. It does not measure labor hours, square footage, removal rates or an industry-standard milestone. Within the areas she described, the coarse drum-sander pass was done, while the matching edge work remained in progress.

Why the first sanding pass took the longest
The floor still contained dark finish in the wood grain. Linauer’s priority was to remove that dark material before moving to finer abrasives. That explains why the first pass was the slowest stage in her account: it was doing the heavy finish-removal work rather than merely refining an already-clean surface.
Red oak can look dramatically different as a dark coating is removed. The partially sanded boards in the report appear lighter than the untouched floor, but the post does not provide instrument readings, a controlled before-and-after photograph or a measured percentage of coating removed. The visual change should therefore be read as a project preview, not a guaranteed color result for every red-oak floor.
The planned sanding and repair sequence
| Stage | Equipment or material | Status or purpose in Linauer’s report |
|---|---|---|
| 36-grit main-floor pass | Rented drum sander | Completed in the areas described; intended to remove the dark finish from the floor and grain. |
| 36-grit perimeter pass | Rented edge sander | About halfway complete near walls and in sections the larger machine could not reach. |
| 60-grit pass | Sanding abrasive | Planned next, after the dark material was removed. |
| 80-grit pass | Sanding abrasive | Planned after 60 grit. |
| 100-grit pass | Sanding abrasive | Planned final grit in the sequence she described. |
| Corners | Floor scraper | Needed because the edge sander could not reach the corners; replacement scraper blades were planned. |
| Visible repairs | Red oak wood filler | Planned for visible areas before finishing. |
| Final sealer | Bona NaturalSeal | Planned sealer; Linauer expected its white pigment to make the floor slightly lighter than bare wood. |
This progression belongs to this particular project. Existing finish thickness, board condition, previous repairs and machine handling can change the work required on another floor, so the sequence should not be treated as a promise that every red-oak installation needs exactly the same number of passes.
How the rented sanders were assigned to each area
Drum sander for the main floor
Linauer rented a drum sander and used it across the main areas of the bedroom suite. The report identifies the machine as the tool for the broad floor sections, where a larger sanding path could cover open space more efficiently than a small hand-held tool.

Edge sander at walls and in the narrow hall
The edge sander handled the perimeter close to walls and a narrow hallway where the larger sander would not fit. Linauer also described working with the grain in that constrained section. Her progress estimate separates this work from the completed drum-sander pass, which is why the floor could be “halfway” through the overall process even though the main open-area pass was finished.
Scraper for corners
The edge sander could not reach the corners. Linauer planned to use a floor scraper there and to replace the scraper blades before continuing. That detail matters because a perimeter can look largely sanded while small corner areas still retain old coating or need manual attention.
What the lightened floor looked like in the blue walk-in closet
The blue walk-in closet served as a visual preview. In the photograph, the partially sanded wood reads much lighter than the earlier dark floor, creating a strong contrast with the blue room. The image is descriptive rather than color-calibrated: no paint-chip comparison, measured value, white-balance reference or finished-sealer sample is supplied.
Linauer’s preview answers a practical design question—whether lighter wood will change the feel of a blue closet—without claiming that the pictured tone is the final one. Sanding exposes the unfinished wood, while the planned sealer was expected to alter it again. Readers should treat the closet image as an interim appearance and a way to judge contrast, not as a guaranteed finished color.

Repairs planned before sealing
After the abrasive work, Linauer planned to fill visible areas with red oak wood filler. The report does not list the number, size or location of those defects, and it does not document the filler’s final color after sealing. The repair step is therefore part of her stated plan, not evidence that every visible mark had already been corrected.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchReplacing the floor-scraper blades was also on her list. A fresh blade was intended to support the manual corner work that the edge sander could not perform. The post does not report a blade brand, dimensions, replacement interval or a test of scraping performance.
The intended lighter finish
Linauer chose Bona NaturalSeal as the planned sealer. She wrote, “I’ll be using Bona NaturalSeal on the floors, and that sealer has a bit of white pigment added to it.” That is her description of the product in the context of her project, not an independent product test or a manufacturer specification.
Her expectation was that the white pigment would leave the finished floor slightly lighter than the unfinished red oak visible after sanding. Because the post stops at the progress stage, it does not establish the cured color, sheen, durability, application coverage or compatibility of that sealer on this particular floor. Those outcomes would require the completed installation and product instructions, neither of which is documented in the progress report.

How to interpret the “about halfway” milestone
The milestone combines several kinds of work rather than a simple percentage of floor area. Open-floor sanding with the drum machine was complete in the described areas, but edge sanding was only about halfway complete. Corner scraping, later grits, filler and sealer still remained.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction is important when reading progress updates. A room can look substantially lighter while still being far from ready for finish. Coarse removal, perimeter blending, corner work, progressively finer sanding, repairs and coating are separate tasks, and completion of one does not certify completion of the others.
A homeowner’s workflow, translated into decisions
Decide whether the existing dark material is actually gone
Linauer did not move to finer grits merely because the floor looked lighter. She wanted dark material remaining in the grain removed first. For a reader following a similar project, the decision point in this account is visual and practical: continue the coarse removal stage where the old finish remains instead of using a finer abrasive to polish over it.
Separate open-floor work from perimeter work
The report treats the drum-sander pass and edge-sander pass as distinct jobs. Planning them separately helps explain why edges can lag behind the center of a room and why a hallway may need a different tool even when it belongs to the same suite.

Allow for hand work at the boundaries
Because the edge sander could not reach corners, the workflow included a scraper. Any schedule based only on machine passes would omit that manual portion of the project.
Reserve time for visual repairs
Filler was planned for visible areas after sanding. The report gives no quantity, so the extent of that work depends on what the cleaned boards reveal.
Judge color only after the stated finish system is complete
The closet preview shows sanded wood, while the intended sealer contains white pigment according to Linauer’s description. Comparing the preview directly with a finished-floor color would confuse two different stages.
What this progress report does and does not establish
- It establishes one homeowner’s planned grit progression and division of labor between drum, edge and hand tools.
- It establishes that the 36-grit drum work was complete in the areas described and that 36-grit edge sanding was estimated at roughly halfway.
- It shows a visual contrast between a dark existing floor and lighter, partially sanded red oak in a blue closet.
- It records a plan to use red oak filler, replace scraper blades and apply Bona NaturalSeal.
- It does not establish a universal grit schedule, a measured production rate, a finished color, a durability result or a product comparison.
- It does not report final completion of the bedroom suite, final photographs after sealing or independent testing of the sealer.
Why the report is useful for planning a similar project
The value of the account is its sequencing detail. It makes clear that dark-finish removal can dominate the early work, that machine access changes from the center of a room to its edges, and that corners may require a separate manual method. It also shows why a design preview should be labeled as such when the finish has not yet been applied.
For someone evaluating a comparable red-oak floor, the report offers a checklist of questions rather than a guaranteed recipe: Which areas can the main machine reach? Where will an edge tool stop? Which corners need scraping? What visible defects may need filler? How will the planned sealer affect the lighter raw-wood appearance? Answering those questions before renting equipment can produce a more realistic schedule than treating the room as one uninterrupted sanding surface.
