You can change the look of a wallpapered bathroom without removing every square inch of paper, but the method is a controlled cover-up, not a true wallpaper-removal technique. Keep wallpaper that is firmly bonded, remove only loose sections, feather the exposed edges, skim the seams with pre-mixed drywall joint compound, sand the repairs, and then prime and paint. The result depends entirely on the existing surface and the room’s moisture level.

Use this approach only when the paper is substantially sound, smooth, and dry. Test a small, hidden area with primer first. If the paper lifts, blisters, softens, or refuses to hold the primer, stop and plan for removal or a different wall treatment.
What “remove wallpaper without removing it” actually means
The phrase describes making wallpaper visually disappear rather than stripping it from the wall. Kristi Linauer documented this approach in her February 1, 2013 bathroom-makeover post, updated December 27, 2013. She wanted to avoid the tedious stripping process and the drywall repairs that can follow it. Her solution was to leave sound paper in place and repair only the areas that were already failing.

That distinction matters. You are not sealing a damaged wall and guaranteeing a permanent paint finish. You are preparing an existing wallpaper surface to act as a paint substrate. Any weak adhesive, moisture damage, texture, or unstable seam remains a potential failure point under the new coating.
Sherwin-Williams states in its painting FAQs, “We typically do not recommend painting over wallpaper for the following reasons.” Its listed concerns include seams that do not lie down, moisture-related blistering or peeling, minimal adhesion over heavy vinyl, and texture that remains visible through paint. Its guidance allows a paint-over attempt when removal is not an option only after cleaning, light seam sanding, a small primer test, and confirmation that the surface does not lift or blister.
Decide whether your bathroom is a candidate
Inspect the entire room in daylight and with your hand. Do not judge suitability from one intact-looking wall; wallpaper often fails first around corners, plumbing penetrations, the ceiling line, and areas exposed to steam.
| Condition | Proceed? | Reason and action |
|---|---|---|
| Paper is flat, firmly attached, and smooth | Potentially | Continue with a small primer test and the repair sequence. |
| Isolated loose edge or small peeled patch | Potentially | Remove the loose material, feather the edge, and skim the transition. |
| Peeling in many locations or broad bubbles | No | The substrate is unstable. Painting can trap moisture and make the failure harder to repair. |
| Raised embossing, heavy texture, or deep pattern | Usually no | Paint may not hide the relief; sanding can damage the paper and expose more weak areas. |
| Heavy vinyl with a slick face | High risk | Primer may have little adhesion. Test an inconspicuous section before committing. |
| Visible mold, water staining, or damp drywall | No until corrected | Find and fix the moisture source, remove contaminated material as appropriate, and allow the wall to dry. |
| Powder room or well-ventilated guest bath | More favorable | Lower steam exposure gives the retained paper a better chance of remaining stable. |
| Bathroom with frequent hot showers and weak ventilation | Questionable | Persistent humidity can damage traditional wallpaper over time and can undermine a paint-over repair. |
Sherwin-Williams advises avoiding paint over wallpaper that is textured or peeling in multiple places. Treat that as a stop sign, not a challenge to add more compound. If the wall moves, feels soft, or shows recurring moisture damage, full removal and wall repair are safer than covering the symptoms.
Materials and tools
The source method uses ordinary drywall-repair supplies rather than a specialized wallpaper-coating system.
| Item | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Electric sander | Smooths seams and feathers paper edges | Use controlled pressure; aggressive sanding can tear the wallpaper face or expose drywall. |
| 150-grit sandpaper | Initial edge blending and final smoothing | Have extra sheets available because joint compound and paper dust load abrasive quickly. |
| Pre-mixed drywall joint compound | Skims shallow transitions and seams | Use a very thin coat. This is a surface-blending layer, not a thick patch. |
| 8- or 10-inch taping knife | Spreads and feathers compound | A wider blade creates a gradual transition that is less obvious after painting. |
| Primer | Seals the prepared surface and provides a paint-ready base | Linauer suggests an oil-based primer from her experience; manufacturer directions and compatibility with your wallpaper still control. |
| Bathroom-suitable paint | Finish coat | Choose a coating labeled for the room and follow its recoat and ventilation requirements. |
| Cleaning cloths, mild cleaner, and water | Removes surface soil before sanding or priming | Do not saturate the wall; allow it to dry completely. |
| Dust protection and eye protection | Controls sanding debris | Ventilate the room and protect fixtures, floors, and nearby cabinets. |
The central purchase is pre-mixed drywall joint compound. The 8- or 10-inch taping knife is the related tool that lets you feather the repair beyond the visible edge. No particular brand, price, or product has been established as superior for this method.

Prepare the room before touching the wallpaper
- Control moisture. Repair leaks, exhaust-fan problems, or plumbing issues first. Run the fan during cleaning and drying, and keep the room out of service until the wall is fully dry.
- Protect the work area. Remove switch plates and hardware where practical. Cover the floor, vanity, toilet, and fixtures so sanding dust and compound cannot settle into them.
- Clean gently. Wipe away soap film, grease, and dust with a lightly damp cloth and mild cleaner. Avoid soaking seams or repeatedly scrubbing the paper face. Let the surface dry.
- Map defects. Mark loose corners, bubbles, open seams, scratches, and areas where the pattern or texture stands proud. This prevents you from overlooking a weak spot after the first coat of primer.
The four-step cover-and-paint method
1. Remove only loose or peeling paper
Start at an already lifted edge and pull slowly. Remove material that releases without force, including loose strips around a failed seam. Stop when you reach paper that is firmly bonded. Do not strip an entire wall simply because one section came away easily; the method depends on leaving stable wallpaper in place.
If a loose flap tears into a sound area, trim the ragged edge cleanly rather than enlarging the repair. A sharp utility blade can help with a controlled cut, but avoid gouging the drywall beneath. The objective is a firm perimeter that can be feathered with compound.
2. Sand seams and feather the exposed edges
Use 150-grit paper on an electric sander to smooth raised seams and taper the boundary where wallpaper was removed. Hold the sander flat and make light passes. You are reducing a ridge, not grinding through the wallpaper.
Run your fingertips across the transition frequently. A repair that looks acceptable while dusty can still feel like a ridge once the dust is removed. Vacuum or wipe away residue before applying compound. On small areas, hand-sanding gives more control than an electric tool.
3. Skim a very thin coat of pre-mixed joint compound
Load the 8- or 10-inch taping knife with a small amount of compound. Press it over the seam or exposed edge and draw the blade outward, leaving the center just filled and the perimeter nearly transparent. Several thin applications are safer than one thick application because a heavy layer can shrink, crack, or telegraph a broad hump through the paint.
Keep compound off sound wallpaper wherever possible, but extend the feathered edge far enough to erase the step between paper and drywall. Scrape excess compound from the knife after each pass. Let the coat dry according to the compound manufacturer’s instructions; temperature and humidity affect drying time, so do not sand a cool or soft patch.

4. Sand the dry compound smooth
Once the compound is hard and dry, sand with 150-grit paper until the repair blends into the surrounding wallpaper. Use a light touch at the perimeter. Wipe away dust and inspect the wall from several angles under strong side lighting.
If you can feel a lip, pinhole, or shallow depression, apply another thin skim, allow it to dry, and sand again. Do not compensate for a deep defect by spreading a thick coat over a large area. That creates a new uneven surface and adds moisture to the wall.
Run a primer test before painting the whole bathroom
A test patch is the decision point that the shortcut cannot safely skip. Choose a small, inconspicuous area that includes an original seam or repaired edge. Clean it, sand it as planned, and apply the primer you intend to use.
- Apply a uniform test coat without flooding the seam.
- Allow it to dry fully under the room’s normal ventilation conditions.
- Look for lifting edges, bubbles, wrinkles, soft spots, discoloration, or a surface that can be scratched off easily.
- Press painter’s tape lightly onto the test area and remove it. If the coating pulls paper or primer away, adhesion is not adequate.
- Wait through the next period of normal bathroom humidity. A patch that looks sound immediately can still blister after steam reaches the adhesive.
Stop if the paper lifts, blisters, or loses adhesion. Do not try to bury the failure under extra primer or paint. That test cannot predict every long-term outcome, but it can reveal an incompatible surface before the entire room is committed.
Prime and paint after the repairs pass
Linauer personally suggests an oil-based primer before paint. That is her account of the project, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Read the primer label, confirm that it is suitable for the existing wall covering, and provide the ventilation and drying time it requires. Some primers and paints can soften wallpaper adhesives; the test patch is therefore more important than a generic product category.
- Remove dust completely. Vacuum the wall and wipe it with a dry or barely damp cloth. Residual sanding dust weakens adhesion and leaves a gritty finish.
- Prime the repaired areas first. Seal exposed compound and paper edges without creating runs. Feather the primer beyond the repair so there is no hard border.
- Prime the remaining wall. Keep the film even and avoid overworking a section as it begins to set.
- Inspect after drying. Side-light the wall. Primer often reveals seams, texture, or bubbles that were difficult to see on bare wallpaper. Correct only stable defects; stop if the paper is moving.
- Apply the finish paint. Use the number of coats and recoat interval on the paint label. Roll gently over seams and avoid saturating the wall with repeated passes.
- Ventilate while curing. Keep showers and heavy steam away from the fresh coating until it has reached the label’s stated cure time.
Paint can reduce contrast, but it cannot reliably erase deep embossing or a wallpaper pattern with strong relief. Expect the finish to look best when the original paper is smooth and the seams have been carefully feathered.

Why bathrooms require extra caution
Sherwin-Williams’ bathroom-wallpaper guidance warns that traditional wallpaper in a room containing a bath or shower may be damaged over time and recommends good ventilation or using wallpaper in a guest bathroom. That guidance concerns wallpaper generally; it is not a controlled test of this particular paint-over procedure. It does establish why a retained paper layer deserves more caution in a steamy bathroom than in a dry hallway.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A powder room with no shower, a guest bath used occasionally, or a bathroom with strong exhaust and a habit of running it during and after showers presents a more favorable environment. A small, enclosed shower room that stays humid for hours presents a higher risk. Even a sound test patch cannot eliminate the possibility that repeated vapor will eventually soften adhesive at a seam.
Full removal versus the cover-and-paint workaround
Full removal remains the manufacturer’s general preference because it exposes the wall, allows damaged drywall and adhesive residue to be corrected, and eliminates the old paper as a future failure layer. It can also create its own work: wallpaper removal may pull the drywall’s paper face or reveal areas that need skim coating.
| Decision factor | Full removal | Leave sound paper and cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Substrate condition | Lets you inspect and repair the wall directly | Requires a consistently stable wallpaper layer |
| Loose or peeling areas | Removes the underlying failure | Only works for isolated defects that can be removed and blended |
| Texture and seams | Provides the best chance of a uniformly smooth finish | May leave visible texture or seams after paint |
| Humidity exposure | Eliminates wallpaper adhesive from the finished wall | Leaves adhesive and paper vulnerable to bathroom moisture |
| Potential wall damage | May require drywall repair after stripping | Minimizes disturbance to areas that are firmly attached |
| Evidence before committing | Condition is visible after removal | Requires a primer test; stop if it lifts or blisters |
| Cost and time | No quantified comparison is established | No quantified comparison is established |
Choose removal when the wall is broadly peeling, textured, damp, mold-affected, or coated with slick vinyl that fails the test patch. Choose the workaround only when preserving a stable wall is more important than achieving a guaranteed bare substrate and you accept that future repair may still be necessary.
Troubleshoot common failure signs
The seam shows through primer
Let the primer dry, then feel the seam. If it is raised, sand lightly and apply a thin additional skim of compound. If the line is only a color change but the surface is flat, a second compatible primer coat may even the appearance. Do not keep adding paint to a physical ridge.

Bubbles appear under primer or paint
Stop coating the wall. Mark the bubbles, allow the area to dry, and determine whether steam, a leak, or weak adhesive is responsible. Cut back unstable material only after the cause is corrected. Broad or recurring bubbles favor full removal.
The paint will not adhere to a slick surface
Do not assume heavier sanding will solve it; aggressive abrasion can damage the paper. Remove the test coating, follow the primer manufacturer’s surface-preparation instructions, and repeat a small compatibility test. If adhesion remains poor, the wallpaper is not a suitable substrate.
Texture remains visible
Paint follows the contours beneath it. If the texture is pronounced, covering it with more coats will not create a flat wall. Removing the textured paper or installing a new, properly prepared surface is the reliable correction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMusty odor or mold returns
Pause the makeover and investigate moisture. Paint is not a mold-treatment system, and sealing a damp wall can conceal damage. Address ventilation, leaks, and contaminated materials before choosing any finish.
How to maintain the finished bathroom
- Run the exhaust fan during showers and for the period recommended for your room after showering.
- Wipe condensation from walls and trim instead of allowing water to sit on painted seams.
- Use a soft, damp cloth for cleaning; abrasive scrubbing can expose a seam or wear the paint film.
- Inspect corners, ceiling lines, and plumbing openings periodically for lifting or discoloration.
- Repair a small failure promptly. Once moisture reaches behind the paper, a localized touch-up may no longer be adequate.
What result should you expect?
The best-case result is a painted wall that reads as fresh at normal viewing distance, with seams and small repairs visually subdued. It is not guaranteed to look like a newly installed, bare drywall surface. Side lighting can reveal feathered transitions, and the original texture or pattern may remain perceptible.
Linauer described the process as faster than stripping in her own project, but that is personal experience rather than a measured time study. No controlled durability test, cost comparison, or quantified success rate establishes how long a painted-over wallpaper surface will last. Treat the method as a conditional way to refresh a suitable wall, not as a universal replacement for removal.
