Revenue share can be the strongest starting point for a public venue that wants paid visitor lockers but does not want to buy and operate the entire system. In a qualifying arrangement, a specialist may fund or contribute to installation, supply and own the equipment, run the software and payments, and share rental income with the venue. That is a commercial proposition, not a universal guarantee: eligibility, costs, control, and earnings depend on the site and the contract.

What a revenue-share locker system actually is
A revenue-share locker system is a partnership between a venue and a locker operator. The operator assesses the location, supplies or finances the installed locker equipment, and may take responsibility for software, payment processing, monitoring, repairs, and maintenance. The venue supplies a suitable location and the operational access agreed in the contract. When visitors rent compartments, the resulting income is divided according to the agreed formula.

Hublok describes one version this way: “For suitable sites, Hublok can fund or contribute towards the agreed locker installation and manage the core service in return for a share of the income generated.” That wording matters. “Suitable sites” and “agreed” signal a commercial assessment and a negotiated scope, not an automatic, free installation.
The provider may own the hardware during the term, or the agreement may set out a later transfer. A venue can still be responsible for floor space, power, network access, permits or enabling works, opening-hours access, cleaning around the units, and helping visitors with basic directions. The contract should identify every one of those duties before installation.
Four reasons venues consider revenue share
1. It may reduce the initial capital commitment
Buying a venue-scale locker installation requires money before the first rental is collected. A revenue-share provider may fund all or part of the equipment and installation when the site meets its commercial and technical criteria. Basecamp Lockers describes funding qualifying installations; Hublok describes funding or contributing to an agreed installation. For a venue with limited capital, that can make a paid storage service possible sooner than an outright purchase.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe qualification is essential: a proposal that says “zero upfront” for the equipment does not necessarily mean zero venue expenditure. You may still need to provide electrical work, data connectivity, construction, security changes, signage, insurance, or staff time. Ask for a line-by-line schedule showing what the provider funds, what the venue funds, and which costs are deducted from locker income.
Capital relief is also different from a lower total cost. In exchange for funding, the provider receives part of the income and may retain ownership. Compare the cash the venue avoids spending on day one with the share of future receipts it gives up over the full term.
2. A specialist can install and operate the technical system
Installed lockers combine physical equipment with payment, access control, networking, customer messaging, reporting, and security processes. Basecamp describes a model in which it funds, installs, owns, and maintains the system. Eurolockers describes handling software, payments, monitoring, and maintenance. Moving those functions to a specialist can reduce the technical burden on a venue whose core business is exhibitions, entertainment, transport, sport, or hospitality rather than locker operations.

Confirm the exact boundary of that support. “Managed” can mean remote monitoring and scheduled maintenance, while the venue still handles a jammed door, a lost code, a visitor dispute, or a damaged compartment until the provider responds. The agreement should state which party answers the public telephone number, which party controls refunds, and how an incident is escalated outside normal hours.

3. External operating support can reduce direct workload
Provider descriptions commonly include monitoring, repairs, maintenance, payment handling, and technical support. If those services are delivered as promised, venue staff do not need to reconcile every transaction, inspect every compartment, or arrange specialist repairs themselves. That can be valuable at sites with long opening hours or seasonal peaks.
Workload is reduced only when responsibilities and response standards are written down. Specify preventive-maintenance intervals, target response and repair times, spare-parts arrangements, software-update responsibility, cleaning expectations, and the process for taking a bank of lockers offline. Include a named escalation route for repeated failures and a requirement for service reports that the venue can review.
Consider the visitor-facing tasks that do not disappear: directing people to the lockers, explaining size limits, assisting visitors who are unfamiliar with self-service payment, and managing belongings left after closing. Decide whether the provider supplies scripts, signage, remote support, or on-site training.
4. The venue can add a paid visitor service while sharing income
Visitors gain a self-service place for bags, coats, or other permitted belongings. The venue receives the share specified in the agreement instead of paying for the entire operation. This can align the provider’s incentive with keeping compartments available, payments working, and the service visible.
Income is not guaranteed, and a locker installation is not automatically profitable. The result depends on demand, prices, rental duration, capacity, placement, opening schedule, operating costs, and how often each compartment turns over. Neither a high-footfall site nor a large locker bank guarantees strong utilisation.

How the money is calculated
Never evaluate a percentage without identifying its base. “Fifty percent” of gross receipts is very different from 50% of net profit after agreed operating costs, payment charges, refunds, taxes, and other deductions.
Gross receipts versus net profit
- Gross-receipts share: the percentage is applied to rental payments before the deductions listed in the contract.
- Net-profit share: agreed direct costs are removed first, then the remaining amount is divided.
- Hybrid formula: a contract may use a minimum payment, a stepped percentage, or different treatments for transaction fees and exceptional repairs.
Ask the provider to show a worked calculation using your proposed prices, expected rentals, taxes, refunds, card charges, maintenance allowance, and any minimum payment. Require regular statements that show total rentals, refunds, each deduction, the calculation base, and the amount remitted to the venue.
Basecamp’s illustrative example
Basecamp Lockers gives an illustrative 2026 example, explicitly described by the provider as neither a guaranteed offer nor an income forecast: £3,000 in gross locker income less £350 in agreed direct operating costs leaves £2,650 in net profit. A 50/50 split would pay £1,325 to each party. The example demonstrates why the deduction list matters; it does not predict what a particular venue will earn.

A vendor-reported case result
CS Storage reports more than £4,000 per month for its Squid Game Experience London case study. That is a supplier-reported result for one named installation, with no evidence here that it is typical of public venues or transferable to another city, season, capacity, or pricing model. Treat it as a case reference to investigate, not as a forecast.
What determines whether a site earns well
Eurolockers states on its official revenue-share page that “There is no single earnings figure that fits every venue.” That is the appropriate starting assumption. Build a site-specific model around the variables below rather than using a headline monthly number.
- Visitor demand: estimate how many people arrive without convenient storage and how many are willing to pay.
- Rental duration: hourly, daily, event-based, and overnight use produce different turnover patterns.
- Price and product mix: small, medium, large, accessible, and specialist compartments may have different prices and utilisation.
- Placement and visibility: a secure location on the natural visitor route generally gives the service more opportunities than a hidden room.
- Opening schedule: a bank that cannot be reached during early arrivals, late departures, or event changeovers loses potential rentals.
- Capacity and turns: revenue depends on how many compartments are available and how often each is rented, not simply on the venue’s annual footfall.
- Operating deductions: payment processing, refunds, repairs, connectivity, cleaning, insurance, and exceptional damage treatment can change net profit.
- Seasonality: festivals, school holidays, exhibitions, and weather can create peaks and quiet periods that a monthly average conceals.
Eurolockers also reports 300-plus installations, operation across Europe since 2008, and service across 13 sectors. Those are the company’s own claims about its scale and experience; they do not establish that a particular venue will qualify or achieve a particular return.

Revenue share compared with buying or financing
Hublok presents purchase, finance, and revenue share as alternative commercial routes. The right choice depends on the venue’s capital, appetite for operational work, desired control, and expected utilisation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Decision area | Revenue share | Outright purchase | Finance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial capital | Provider may fund or contribute for a qualifying site; venue contributions can still apply. | Venue pays for the equipment and installation. | Payments spread over an agreed financing term. |
| Ownership | Provider may own the system during the term; transfer terms are contract-specific. | Venue owns the system after purchase. | Ownership depends on the finance structure and end-of-term terms. |
| Income | Venue receives an agreed share of rental income. | Venue keeps rental income after its operating costs. | Venue generally keeps rental income while servicing finance payments. |
| Operating support | Provider may run software, payments, monitoring, maintenance, and support. | Venue arranges those functions itself or buys a separate service contract. | Support depends on the supplier and finance agreement. |
| Control | Pricing, promotions, data, and changes may require provider agreement. | Venue has the greatest direct control, subject to law and supplier warranties. | Control is usually greater than revenue share but remains subject to the financed system’s terms. |
| Risk profile | Lower initial capital exposure, but the venue gives up part of income and relies on contract performance. | Higher upfront exposure, with more upside if utilisation is strong. | Fixed payment obligations continue even when demand is weak. |
Use the same assumptions for all three options: compartment count, price, rental turns, seasonality, payment fees, maintenance, insurance, taxes, financing cost, and residual value. A proposal that looks attractive only because it assumes higher demand or omits deductions is not a fair comparison.
Terms to settle before signing
Request the commercial offer and operating schedule as one document set. The following checklist covers the issues most likely to change the venue’s economics or workload.
- Funding scope: list hardware, delivery, installation, civil works, power, network, signage, permits, and commissioning, with the payer for each.
- Ownership and title: state who owns lockers, payment devices, software accounts, data, and spare parts during the term and after termination.
- Share basis: define gross receipts, net profit, every permitted deduction, taxes, refunds, chargebacks, and exceptional repair treatment.
- Percentage and payment timing: specify the rate, minimums if any, statement format, payment date, audit rights, and treatment of late payments.
- Term and exit: cover start date, renewal, early termination, insolvency, removal costs, reinstatement of the site, and what happens to active rentals.
- Pricing authority: identify who can change prices, create event rates, offer discounts, and approve promotions.
- Technical scope: list the locker model, capacity mix, payment methods, connectivity, software features, accessibility provisions, and cybersecurity responsibilities.
- Service levels: set monitoring coverage, help-desk hours, response targets, repair targets, planned downtime notice, and remedies for persistent failures.
- Visitor support: allocate refunds, lost access codes, abandoned property, damaged items, complaints, safeguarding incidents, and emergency access.
- Reporting: require transaction-level or daily summaries, occupancy data, downtime records, maintenance logs, and a process to challenge figures.
- Site obligations: confirm space, floor loading, ventilation, lighting, power capacity, network, security, cleaning, accessibility routes, and staff access.
A practical due-diligence process
- Define the service. Record what visitors may store, maximum rental duration, opening hours, prohibited items, expected payment methods, and the visitor groups who need the service.
- Survey the site. Measure the proposed footprint, route to the lockers, electrical supply, network availability, lighting, camera coverage, accessibility, fire egress, and protection from weather or impact.
- Gather demand evidence. Use attendance by day and event, cloakroom queues, bag policies, arrival and departure patterns, and existing storage complaints. Separate measured data from assumptions.
- Request comparable proposals. Ask each provider to price the same capacity, operating hours, service levels, and installation conditions. Require the same gross-to-net waterfall.
- Model three cases. Build conservative, central, and high-utilisation cases with seasonal occupancy and all deductions. Show the venue’s cash receipts month by month, not only an annual total.
- Test the contract. Have finance, operations, facilities, accessibility, information-security, and legal reviewers check the obligations that affect their teams.
- Agree a pilot or review mechanism. If demand is uncertain, negotiate a staged installation, a capacity expansion trigger, or a scheduled performance review rather than assuming every compartment is needed on day one.
- Set launch controls. Confirm signage, staff briefing, payment testing, refund procedures, accessibility checks, emergency contacts, and a named owner for the first weeks of operation.
Common pitfalls and how to prevent them
“Zero upfront” is read as “no venue cost”
Prevent this by attaching a responsibility matrix to the contract. It should identify construction, power, data, permits, security, cleaning, insurance, staff time, and removal costs. Obtain a fixed price or a documented change-control process for enabling works.
The percentage hides deductions
Prevent disputes with a worked example using a real month of expected transactions. Define whether card fees, taxes, refunds, chargebacks, repairs, call-centre costs, and marketing are deducted before the split. Give the venue audit access to the underlying records.
The venue assumes the provider handles every visitor problem
Publish a simple support flow: what visitors do at the locker, which number they call, what venue staff can reset, and when the provider must attend. Include abandoned-property and emergency-access rules.

Capacity is chosen from footfall alone
Size the system from arrival patterns, bag policy, event duration, compartment mix, and observed storage demand. A venue can have high attendance but low paid-locker use, or short peaks that require more capacity than a daily average suggests.
Exit costs are ignored
Clarify who pays to disconnect, remove, transport, store, recycle, or make good the site. Cover a venue closure, refurbishment, provider failure, and early termination for repeated service-level breaches.
Accessibility is left until installation
Review accessible compartment heights, approach routes, reach ranges, payment interfaces, lighting, signage, and assistance procedures during design. Verify the arrangement against the requirements that apply in your jurisdiction and building.
When revenue share is likely to fit
The model is most compelling when the venue has a credible paid-storage need, limited appetite for capital expenditure, and a preference for outsourced technical operations. It is less attractive when the venue can fund the system comfortably, expects very high utilisation, needs unrestricted control over pricing and data, or cannot accept a multi-year commitment and provider dependency.
Use revenue share as the leading option only after the provider’s proposal survives a like-for-like comparison with purchase and finance. The decision should rest on the venue’s forecasted cash outcome, service obligations, ownership position, and exit rights—not on a headline percentage or a case study from another site.
Questions to ask every provider
- What site, demand, and technical criteria determine eligibility?
- Exactly which installation and enabling costs will you fund?
- Who owns the hardware, software account, transaction data, and customer-support relationship?
- Is the venue’s share calculated from gross receipts or net profit, and what deductions are allowed?
- How often will the venue be paid, and what reports and audit rights accompany each payment?
- Who controls prices, discounts, promotions, capacity changes, and event overrides?
- What are the monitoring hours, response targets, repair targets, and remedies for downtime?
- Who handles refunds, chargebacks, abandoned property, damaged belongings, and emergency opening?
- What power, network, floor, accessibility, security, and staff requirements must the venue provide?
- What happens to the lockers, the site, and active customer rentals if either party exits?
Verdict
Revenue share is often the best option for a public venue that wants lockers without committing all of the purchase price and technical workload upfront. Its advantages are conditional: a suitable provider may fund and manage the system, while the venue gains a visitor service and an agreed income share. The trade-offs are equally real—less control, shared revenue, provider dependency, and possible venue obligations.
Approve the model only when the contract makes the economics auditable: installation responsibilities, ownership, deductions, service levels, pricing control, reporting, accessibility, and exit costs must all be explicit. A site-specific forecast, not a promised percentage or isolated case result, is the basis for deciding whether the partnership works.
