Richard Rogers’ Drawing Gallery at Château La Coste in Provence appears to float above the trees because its gallery box projects outward as a 27-metre cantilever, anchored at one end rather than supported beneath its full length. The orange steel frame makes that structure visible; the room’s glazing at both ends draws the eye through the building and out to the landscape.
What is the Richard Rogers Drawing Gallery?
The gallery is part of Château La Coste, an estate in Provence, France, where contemporary art and architecture sit alongside wine production. Rogers chose the remote, wooded site in 2017 after visiting it with the estate’s owner. The project record gives the dates as 2017–2020 and identifies Château La Coste as the client. RSHP calls it Rogers’ final work begun before he retired from practice in June 2020. RSHP’s project record
It is a 120 m² open-plan gallery intended for temporary exhibitions, not a room literally suspended without support. Visitors cross a lightweight bridge to reach it, moving from the solid ground into the projecting structure. The building is included on the estate’s Architectural & Art Walk.

The gallery’s long, rectangular volume extends above a wooded slope as a cantilever: its structural support is concentrated at one end, leaving the projecting portion without columns beneath it. RSHP’s 15 February 2021 completion announcement describes a 27 m cantilever reaching a point 18 m above the wooded site. Those are the architect’s reported project measurements. The effect depends on the contrast between the exposed orange steel frame and the satin-finished steel cladding around the gallery box. The frame tapers as it reaches outward, visibly tracing the structure that enables the projection; the cladding reflects the surrounding landscape. Together, they make the gallery read as both a crafted room and a piece of engineering.
How is the room designed to frame the landscape?
RSHP describes a simple orthogonal rectangle, 4 m high and 5 m wide, with an interior area of 120 m². It is opaque apart from floor-to-ceiling glazing at either end. This restrained arrangement focuses attention on the view through the gallery; at the far end, a large opening frames the landscape and leads onto an exterior terrace. RSHP’s project record

The approach is part of that experience. The bridge provides a transition to the cantilever, while the room’s end-to-end glazing keeps the surrounding woods and distant landscape in view. The result is not simply a gallery placed in the forest: the path, structure and framed outlook shape how visitors encounter the site.

In an account of the project published by ArchDaily on 20 December 2021 with text supplied by RSHP, the architects describe the cantilever and the region’s seismic activity as reasons for bridge-type engineering and flexible construction. The entrance uses tension cables that contract and expand as temperatures change, and the poured resin floor flexes with the structure. ArchDaily’s project account
