The 2017 list behind “9 ripper roses to revamp your garden” does not deliver nine fully described rose choices. It contains eight entries with usable descriptions, while a separate “Jude Obscure” heading has no descriptive copy. This guide keeps the evidence intact: it compares the eight documented entries, identifies Jude the Obscure accurately from the breeder’s current listing, and does not invent a ninth cultivar.

Use the comparison to match flower colour, form, fragrance, growth habit and known size to your planting plan. Where the source gives no characteristic, the honest answer is “not stated”—so check a current plant label or nursery listing before you buy.

The matching Better Homes & Gardens Australia article was published on 9 June 2017. Its headline promises nine roses, but the material that can be described reliably amounts to eight entries: two collection headings and six named roses, with one additional Jude Obscure heading that has no descriptive text. The old purchase offers are historical and should not be treated as current prices, stock notices or recommendations.

The two collection headings are not named cultivars. “Fragrant roses collection” identifies a fragrance-led collection but supplies no individual rose names. “David Austin collection” refers to a shrub-rose collection without naming the varieties in that particular article. Treat both as broad categories rather than as single plants.
The table separates what is actually stated from what remains unknown. That distinction matters when planning a border: only First Crush has a published approximate footprint, and several entries have no recorded colour, fragrance or habit beyond the wording below.
At-a-glance comparison of the documented entries

The eight entries, explained
Fragrant roses collection
This heading is useful only as a buying direction: fragrance is the organising idea. It does not identify a cultivar, bloom colour, flower shape, mature size or pruning habit. If you are considering a collection pack, ask the seller for the exact cultivar names and their individual dimensions. Without that information, you cannot safely plan spacing or predict how the flowers will look together.

David Austin collection
The article presents this as a collection of shrub roses. “Shrub” describes the collection’s broad growth category, but no cultivar names or measurements are given. Before planting, obtain the current label for each rose; a collection name alone is not enough to determine colour, eventual height or width.

Dark Desire
Dark Desire is the colour-focused choice in the list. Its flowers open violet-red, then move through red into violet-purple hues as they mature. That colour shift gives a bed visual change over the life of each bloom rather than a single fixed shade. The article does not state its fragrance, mature dimensions, flower form or growth habit, so those details should not be assumed from the name.
First Crush
First Crush has the clearest combination of appearance, scent and scale. Fruity-scented flowers begin as high-centred buds and open into white cups. The plant is described as bushy and vigorous, and the article gives an average size of about 1 metre tall by 80 centimetres wide. That figure is the only explicit plant dimension in the source and should be treated as an approximate report from 2017, not a guaranteed size for every site or season.
Among these entries, First Crush is therefore the easiest to place when you need a known footprint. The white flowers can sit against darker foliage, while the fruity scent gives you a reason to place it where visitors pass close by.

Golden Celebration is defined by large, deeply cupped flowers in golden yellow. The combination of saturated colour and pronounced cup shape makes it the most obvious warm-toned focal point in the documented group. No fragrance, growth habit or mature dimensions are supplied, so use the current nursery label to determine how much room it needs.

Ice Girl
Ice Girl is described as robust, with fragrant white blooms. “Robust” is the only habit-related wording supplied; it is not a quantified size or a promise of performance in every climate. The white flowers and stated fragrance make it a candidate for a pale, scent-led area, but the article does not specify flower form, height or width.
Perfume Passion
Perfume Passion carries abundant pink blooms on long, almost thornless stems. The long stems may be visually important when you are choosing a position where the plant can be seen from several angles, while the near-thornless description is a practical feature for handling. Despite the name, the article does not provide a fragrance description. Mature dimensions and the plant’s broader habit are also not stated.
Summer Romance
Summer Romance is the entry with the most distinctive scent language: spicy-apple and liquorice notes. It is also described as having dense, dark-green foliage. Those are the only reported traits; the source does not give bloom colour, flower shape, height or width. If foliage texture and unusual fragrance are priorities, this is the documented match, but confirm the plant’s eventual scale before deciding where it goes.
Where Jude the Obscure fits—and why it is not a ninth documented pick
The old article includes a “Jude Obscure” heading but provides no descriptive copy beneath it. That means there is no defensible colour, form, scent, habit or size profile to extract from that page. It should not be counted as a fully described ninth recommendation.

David Austin’s current listing identifies Jude the Obscure, cultivar name Ausjo, as an English shrub rose. The spelling and cultivar identification resolve the old heading, but they do not recreate the missing description from the 2017 article. Treat the official listing as the authoritative identity and obtain current label information for dimensions and care before planting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by the trait your garden needs
The entries do not share a complete scorecard, so choose in the order that reflects your real constraint rather than ranking them as if they had been tested under identical conditions.
If colour is the main design decision
- Choose Dark Desire for a bloom that moves from violet-red toward red and violet-purple.
- Choose Golden Celebration for large, golden-yellow, deeply cupped flowers.
- Choose First Crush or Ice Girl when white flowers are the documented requirement.
- Choose Perfume Passion when abundant pink blooms are the priority.
If scent is the reason you are planting roses
- First Crush is described as fruity-scented.
- Ice Girl is explicitly described as fragrant.
- Summer Romance has spicy-apple and liquorice notes.
- The fragrant collection is a category rather than a named plant, so request the cultivar list before buying.
If you need a known approximate footprint
First Crush is the only entry with a stated size: about 1 m high by 80 cm wide. For every other rose, leave the planting decision open until a current label or nursery specification supplies mature dimensions. Do not copy First Crush’s measurements onto another cultivar.
If stems or foliage matter more than bloom colour
Perfume Passion is described with long, almost thornless stems. Summer Romance is described with dense, dark-green foliage. Those are the only entries for which those structural traits are reported.

Planting-site requirements supported by current guidance
David Austin’s planting guidance gives one clear light requirement: “Roses thrive in sunlight, so choose a location with at least four hours of direct sun each day.” Measure direct exposure at the proposed bed rather than relying on a general assumption that the garden is sunny.
The same guidance advises preparing the soil thoroughly with a garden fork. Use the fork to work the planting area before setting out the rose, then follow the plant’s current label for any additional soil, watering, feeding or pruning instructions. The available material does not establish a universal soil recipe or a single maintenance schedule for all eight entries.
- Mark a position that receives at least four hours of direct sun.
- Check the current label for the exact cultivar name, mature height and width, because most entries in the old list have no dimensions.
- Prepare the soil thoroughly with a garden fork, as advised in the official planting guidance.
- Set out plants only after comparing their documented or labelled footprints with the space available.
- Keep the label with the plant so the cultivar identity is not lost, especially when buying a collection pack.
How to use this list without being misled by its age
The article’s retail offers date from 2017. They are not current deals, and the old page does not establish present-day Australian stock for any named rose. Availability, seller quality and pricing must be checked independently at the time you buy.

For collection headings, insist on the individual cultivar names before paying.
A practical layout using only the documented traits
Start with the one measured plant. If you want a compact, clearly bounded white-flowering feature, place First Crush where its approximate 1 m by 80 cm footprint can be accommodated. Build colour around it with Dark Desire’s shifting violet-red tones, Golden Celebration’s yellow cups or Perfume Passion’s pink abundance. Add Ice Girl where a fragrant white bloom is useful, and reserve Summer Romance for a position where its unusual scent and dense dark-green foliage can be noticed.
This is a trait-based arrangement, not a claim that the roses bloom at the same time or perform identically. The source does not provide flowering calendars, regional trials or comparative disease results, so those decisions require current local information.
The honest verdict on the title
There are not nine fully described rose recommendations to reproduce from the 2017 page. There are eight usable entries, one unelaborated Jude Obscure heading, and a current identification of Jude the Obscure (Ausjo) as an English shrub rose. The strongest way to revamp a garden with this material is to select by the traits actually documented, verify missing dimensions on current labels, and treat every old offer as expired.
