A Roman Square quilt block can be sewn from strip sets or built from rectangular units around a center square. The name is not used consistently: one tutorial calls a related block Beggar’s Block, Roman Square, or Cats and Mice. The two methods below are separate patterns with different cutting plans, so choose one rather than combining their pieces.

Choose a construction method

Method Finished block size covered Construction Useful when
Strip sets 9 inches Sew three-color strip sets, then subcut them into segments. You want to make repeated segments from long, consistent strips.
Center square and rectangles 9, 13½, or 18 inches Make eight striped rectangular units and arrange them around a center square. You want a center square or a block size beyond 9 inches.

The measurements below are cut sizes unless noted otherwise. A finished block measurement is its size after it is sewn into a quilt; the unfinished block must include seam allowances.

Method 1: Sew the 9-inch strip-set block

American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ pattern uses three prints—white, light pink, and dark pink—and yields a 9-inch finished block. Its cutting plan is:

Sew and subcut the strip sets

  1. Pair one strip of each print, aligning long edges. Sew the three strips together lengthwise to make a strip set. Repeat with the remaining strips to make three sets.
  2. Cut each set across its width into three 3½-inch segments. You will have nine segments altogether.
  3. Arrange the nine segments in three rows. Rotate or position them to match the intended color arrangement before sewing; the pattern’s diagram shows the layout.
  4. Sew the segments together to form each row, then join the three rows to complete the block.

Press the seam allowances toward the segments that run vertically, then press the seams joining the rows in one direction. Consistent pressing helps the seams lie flat at the intersections.

Method 2: Build a block around a center square

Elaine Huff’s related tutorial uses the names Beggar’s Block, Roman Square, and Cats and Mice. It gives three finished sizes. The cut plan for each is distinct; use only the column for your chosen size.

Finished block size Center square Light rectangles Dark rectangles
9 inches 1 light square, 3½ inches 8 light rectangles, 1½ by 3½ inches 16 dark rectangles, 1½ by 3½ inches
13½ inches 1 light square, 5 inches 8 light rectangles, 2 by 5 inches 16 dark rectangles, 2 by 5 inches
18 inches 1 light square, 6½ inches 8 light rectangles, 2½ by 6½ inches 16 dark rectangles, 2½ by 6½ inches

Make the striped units and assemble

  1. For each of eight units, sew one light rectangle between two dark rectangles, matching their long edges. Make eight Roman Stripe units.
  2. Arrange the units around the center square in a three-by-three layout, following the tutorial’s diagram for orientation.
  3. Sew the pieces into rows, then join the rows to complete the block.

Plan a quilt layout

A single block can be repeated in a regular grid, but orientation changes the larger pattern. Huff demonstrates a four-by-four arrangement with every other block rotated, as well as scrappy versions, sashing with cornerstones, and on-point settings. These are layout choices shown in that tutorial, not requirements of the block.

Which version should you sew?

  • Choose strip sets if you want the 9-inch pattern that cuts nine segments from three long, three-color strip sets.
  • Choose the center-square method if you want a visible center square, prefer making separate rectangular units, or need the 13½- or 18-inch size options.
  • Plan from the layout outward if you intend to rotate blocks, use sashing, or set blocks on point; those choices affect how the finished quilt reads, even though they do not change the block’s basic construction.

The two tutorials offer different construction plans, not a tested ranking. They do not establish that one method is universally easier or better. The name variations also should not be treated as proof that every block called Roman Square has the same pattern.

What is known about the block’s name?

Huff recounts a story about the “Beggar’s” name and notes that the version shown is not quite a true charm quilt, but the tutorial does not provide historical documentation for that account. The available instructions establish how these versions are sewn; they do not establish when “Roman Square” originated or whether the names have always referred to the same construction. Treat the naming as tutorial-specific rather than settled quilt history.
