A preserved Rosso Francia marble floor is the starting point for Valencia Biscottini’s renovation of a 2,700-square-foot Milan apartment. Instead of treating the red stone as a detail to disguise, the architects used its blush-and-crimson range to set a springlike palette, then balanced it with pale yellow, sky blue, pink, earthy neutrals, oak and abundant greenery.

The project, published by Architectural Digest on May 16, 2026, was written by Ludovica Stevan and photographed by Francesca Iovene. Its most useful lesson for anyone planning a painted interior is straightforward: let a permanent surface establish the undertone, and make every later color choice answer to it.
The floor is the apartment’s color anchor
The original Rosso Francia marble remains in the living room. Its presence gives the apartment a fixed visual reference: a warm red with the softness associated with blush, rather than a single flat paint-chip color. Valencia Biscottini designed the rest of the home around that existing surface.

John William Valencia, a principal of the firm, described the intention this way: “We wanted to tone down the colors, and bring them toward a dimension closer to the colors of spring.” That statement explains why the rooms do not read as a collection of saturated primary colors. The red is moderated by airy pastels, natural wood and mineral tones, so the floor feels integrated rather than theatrical.
This is a practical color-planning principle. A floor cannot be moved as easily as a chair or repainting project, so it should be assessed first. Identify its dominant temperature, its darkest value and the colors that appear in its veining or aggregate. Those observations can guide wall paint, upholstery, tile and metal finishes without requiring every surface to match.
Where each material appears
The renovation uses different flooring materials to give each part of the apartment a distinct role. The transitions are deliberate rather than an attempt to make every room identical.
| Area | Primary surface | Color relationship | Design function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Original Rosso Francia marble | Warm red and blush tones establish the palette | Preserved focal surface and visual reference |
| Hallways | New commissioned terrazzo | Includes tiles in the same red as the marble, surrounded by earthier hues | Carries the living-room color logic through circulation areas |
| Kitchen | New commissioned terrazzo | Repeats the red accent within a more mineral, earthen mix | Connects a working space to the apartment’s main scheme |
| Bedrooms | Italian herringbone oak parquet | Natural wood adds warmth without introducing another strong hue | Creates a quieter, tactile bedroom setting |
| Bathrooms | Mutina Pico tiles in pink and blue | Pastel color is expressed directly on the walls and surfaces | Gives compact rooms a clear, graphic identity |
Valencia Biscottini commissioned the terrazzo from Fantini Mosaici. Its composition includes tiles in the same red as the original marble, set among more earthen hues. Because the terrazzo runs through the hallways and kitchen, the color cue is experienced repeatedly, but never as a literal copy of the living-room floor.

How the spring palette is balanced
Red becomes a controlled accent
The marble’s red is not treated as a command to paint every wall red. In the project, it functions as an undertone and a recurring accent. That restraint matters in a home with substantial natural light: a strong warm color can become more intense as daylight changes, while a quieter surrounding palette lets the stone remain legible.
Canary yellow and sky blue provide lift
Canary yellow and sky blue introduce the lightness associated with spring. They are opposites in temperature and visual energy, yet both can sit beside a warm red when their intensity is moderated. For a paint scheme, the useful distinction is between hue and saturation: a pale, chalky blue can coexist with blush marble more comfortably than a highly electric blue, and a softened yellow will reflect light without competing with the floor.

Pink and earth tones prevent the scheme from becoming sugary
Pink echoes the marble without pretending to reproduce it. Earthen accents provide the necessary visual weight, keeping the pastel colors from floating. This combination also makes the apartment easier to furnish: natural wood, stone, leather and aged metal can all relate to an earthy middle range while the brighter colors remain moments of emphasis.
Natural light and outdoor greenery act as materials
Large windows bring the greenery outside into the visual field of the living room. Giuseppe Biscottini, another principal of the firm, said, “The greenery outdoors was essential,” adding, “It became an integral part of the home’s color scheme.” In other words, the palette is not limited to finishes selected indoors. The view supplies a changing green counterpoint to the warm floor and pastel furnishings.

For a painter, this is a reminder to evaluate a room from its windows, not only from a paint deck. Foliage can make a warm interior appear fresher, while reflected green light may alter how a neutral wall reads at different times of day. Before choosing a color, observe the room in morning, afternoon and evening light, with curtains and blinds in their normal positions. The Milan apartment’s approach treats the view as part of the composition rather than background scenery.
Furniture keeps the color story grounded
The living room combines named Italian design pieces with the architectural surfaces. The sofa is the Marenco by Mario Marenco for Arflex. Elettra armchairs by B.B.P.R. for Arflex add additional seating, while Tacchini’s Five to Nine chaise longue and Pluto coffee tables supply contrasting shapes around the seating group. A USM Haller modular console provides storage with a more structured, industrial presence.

These pieces matter less as a shopping list than as an example of proportion. Upholstered seating introduces large, quiet fields of color; tables and consoles break those fields with solid geometry and reflective or hard surfaces. When a floor already has visual character, furniture with clear silhouettes can keep the room readable. The goal is not to accumulate colorful objects, but to distribute visual weight so the marble remains one element in a balanced arrangement.
If you are adapting the idea, select one substantial upholstered piece in a restrained tone before adding accent chairs or smaller accessories. Check every candidate against the floor in daylight. A fabric that appears neutral online may pull pink, yellow or gray in the room, and those undertones will change the relationship with red marble.

Bathrooms use tile for a more direct color statement
The bathrooms use Mutina’s Pico tiles in pink and blue. Unlike the living room, where the floor establishes the color indirectly, these rooms make the pastel combination explicit on the tile surfaces. The two colors can define separate zones or create a patterned rhythm, but the project’s documented point is their use as part of the apartment-wide palette.
Small bathrooms often benefit from a decisive material because there are fewer competing furnishings. If you borrow this strategy, decide whether the tile is the dominant feature or a backdrop for painted cabinetry and fittings. Keep grout, metal finishes and lighting in the same temperature family; otherwise a warm pink tile can appear disconnected from a cool white fixture or blue-toned lamp.
Lighting reinforces the apartment’s layered atmosphere
The feature names lighting by Oluce, Luceplan, Azucena, Servomuto and Flos. Their inclusion shows that color is being shaped not only by paint and flooring but also by the light sources and fixtures that illuminate them. Even a carefully selected pastel will change under warm evening light, direct daylight and reflected light from glossy surfaces.
Plan lighting in layers: general illumination for movement, focused light for seating or work, and decorative fixtures that contribute shape when switched off. Test paint samples under each layer before committing. A color that works beside the marble at noon may look noticeably warmer or duller beneath an evening lamp, so the final decision should account for the room’s actual lighting schedule.

What this project teaches about painting around existing floors
Start with a physical sample
Photographs flatten the variation in marble and terrazzo. Obtain a large paint sample or paint a movable board, then place it directly beside the floor. View it at several distances and in both daylight and artificial light. The objective is not an exact match; it is a compatible relationship in value and temperature.
Separate the anchor color from the supporting colors
Choose one color that belongs to the permanent surface and two or three supporting colors that perform different jobs. One may brighten the room, another may cool it, and a neutral may provide rest. The Milan scheme demonstrates this hierarchy through the red marble, springlike yellow and blue, pink notes and earthier counterweights.
Carry a color through circulation, not every room
The commissioned terrazzo extends the red cue into hallways and the kitchen, while bedrooms shift to herringbone oak. This is a useful way to create continuity without making the entire home feel themed. Repeat a color where it helps orientation, then allow a change in material where privacy or calm is more important.
Use texture to moderate pastel color
Pastels can look thin when every surface is smooth and brightly lit. Wood grain, stone variation, terrazzo aggregate and woven upholstery give the eye something to read. Texture also lets a pale color feel substantial without increasing saturation.
Let the view influence the final adjustment
Greenery outside the windows is part of the apartment’s perceived palette. In your own room, note neighboring buildings, trees and sky before selecting a wall color. A green view may support warm blush and yellow; a dense urban view may call for a different balance of warmth and brightness.
A room-by-room adaptation plan
- Inventory fixed finishes. Record the floor, stone, tile, cabinetry and window direction. Mark which elements will remain in place.
- Photograph or sample the anchor surface. Use a physical marble or terrazzo sample when possible, because screen color is unreliable.
- Build a small palette. Select one anchor-related color, one light-reflecting color, one cooler counterpoint and one earthy neutral. Keep the samples together rather than evaluating them separately.
- Test in the actual room. Place large samples on more than one wall and leave them for a full day. Check corners, window walls and areas shaded by furniture.
- Assign colors by function. Use the lightest tone where you need brightness, the stronger accent where you want focus, and the neutral where the eye needs relief.
- Coordinate furnishings and lamps. Confirm that upholstery, wood, metal and bulb color support the paint instead of introducing an unintended undertone.
- Repeat selectively. Carry a small color cue into a hall or adjacent room, then change material or value to mark a new use.
What is documented—and what is not
The published account establishes the apartment’s approximate area, location, architects, preserved marble, terrazzo commission, oak parquet, palette, greenery and named furnishings, tile and lighting. It does not establish the marble’s age or provenance, a restoration method, a construction schedule or any financial return from the renovation. Those details should not be inferred from the finished photographs.

It is also a single-home feature, not a controlled comparison of flooring systems or a measured study of color performance. Its value is the clarity of the design decisions: a permanent red floor sets the direction, related materials extend it, pastel colors add air, and the view supplies living green.
