The Safari Fun Panel Quilt finishes at 40½ × 48½ inches and uses a 32½ × 40½-inch printed center panel framed by a four-color hourglass border. The pattern calls for 40 hourglass units, arranged as four border strips of ten. Its featured Safari Adventures fabric may no longer be available, but a substitute panel can work if it fits the center and its motifs remain well placed after trimming.
What the Safari Fun Panel Quilt pattern makes
American Patchwork & Quilting’s pattern creates a child-size quilt with a printed panel in the center and a patchwork border made from brown, green, orange and yellow prints. The finished quilt measures 40½ × 48½ inches. The pattern credits the sample fabric to Safari Adventures by Deborah Edwards for Northcott and names Laura Boehnke as quilt tester.

The materials list specifies a center panel measuring 32½ × 40½ inches. Those are the pattern’s stated panel dimensions, not a guarantee that every panel sold as a standard size will fit without trimming.

The pattern’s yardage and cutting are based on 42 inches of usable fabric width. Its measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances. For a substitute backing or batting, check that the material meets at least the specified dimensions or yardage; the pattern does not compare fabric brands or batting types.

How to choose and trim a replacement panel
The original sample panel had a printed border. Trimming it to the pattern size left the appearance of a narrow inner border, so the amount and placement of printing near the panel edges can affect the finished look.

- Whether the panel can be trimmed to 32½ × 40½ inches, or adjusted according to the pattern’s alternate sizing instruction.
- Where the main motifs will sit after trimming, so important parts of the design are not cut off.
- Whether a printed edge will remain visible as an inner border or be removed by the cut.
The pattern also allows trimming the panel’s width and length to the largest possible multiple of four, then adding ½ inch. Use that option when the available panel does not suit the stated size, and plan the cut around the artwork rather than dimensions alone.
Cut and assemble the hourglass border
The border uses 40 four-color hourglass units. The pattern’s cutting dimensions include seam allowances, and the units finish at 4½ inches square before assembly into strips.

- From each of the four border prints, cut 10 squares measuring 5¼ inches. This makes 40 squares total.
- Cut each square twice diagonally in an X. The 40 squares yield 160 triangles.
- Sew four triangles, one in each color, into an hourglass unit measuring 4½ inches square, including seam allowances. Make 40 units.
- Join 10 units into a 4½ × 40½-inch border strip. Make four strips.
- Sew the four strips around the trimmed quilt center. The assembled top should measure 40½ × 48½ inches, including seam allowances.
Finish the quilt
Layer the quilt top with the 49 × 57-inch batting and backing, baste the layers, quilt as desired and bind the edges. The pattern lists 2¾ yards of backing fabric and ½ yard of binding fabric.
