Short answer: Dortek’s APAC project listing says it supplied both fire-rated and non-fire-rated hygienic glass-reinforced polyester (GRP) doors throughout the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) facility in Adelaide. The public project record does not identify the door schedule, quantities, exact models, opening locations, fire classifications, hardware or project-specific test certificates. Those details should not be inferred from Dortek’s general product literature.
What the public SAHMRI record actually says
SAHMRI is a health and medical research facility in Adelaide designed by Woods Bagot. Architecture & Design reports that the building opened in November 2013 and focuses on its architecture, including the triangulated façade and the building’s role in the South Australian research precinct. That article does not document the internal door specification.

The installation statement comes from Dortek’s APAC project listing. Dortek says: “SAHMRI required hygienic door solutions to be installed throughout the facility” and that “Dortek supplied fire rated and non fire rated hygienic GRP doors across the facility.” This establishes a supplier-reported scope, not an independently audited performance result.

Consequently, a claim such as “every SAHMRI door was fire-rated,” “the doors achieved a particular cleanroom class,” or “the installation reduced contamination” would go beyond the available evidence. The defensible description is narrower: Dortek reports supplying a mixture of fire-rated and non-fire-rated hygienic GRP doors for the facility.

What “hygienic GRP door” means
GRP is the material description
In Dortek’s product materials, GRP means glass-reinforced polyester. The reinforcement provides a rigid composite construction rather than a conventional timber-based leaf. The term identifies the material system; it does not, by itself, specify a fire rating, air-tightness class, impact rating or cleanroom classification.
Why the surface is described as hygienic
Dortek describes its hygienic doors as having a smooth, seamless construction. Its product-category wording says the design has no ledges, recesses or right angles where dust or bacteria can be trapped and grow. The same material describes resistance to water and chemicals and suitability for rigorous cleaning regimes.

These are manufacturer claims about the product family. They explain the design rationale for a research or healthcare environment, but they do not prove that every door installed at SAHMRI had identical construction or that the facility recorded a particular microbiological outcome.

Hygiene is not one test
“Hygienic” generally describes cleanability and the avoidance of dirt-collecting geometry. A specification still has to define the required surface finish, joints, seals, frame details, hardware, glazing, thresholds and chemical compatibility. A hygienic designation alone does not establish fire resistance, smoke control, hermetic sealing or an air-leakage class.
How fire-rated, non-fire-rated and hermetic options differ
Dortek’s research-facility material treats these as separate configurations. The distinction matters because each responds to a different building-control problem.

EN 1634-1 is a fire-resistance and fire-door test reference. EN 12207:2000 addresses air permeability of doorsets. A project team must check the complete tested assembly, not just a leaf material: frame, seals, vision panels, ironmongery, closer, wall construction and installation details can all affect compliance.
The public SAHMRI listing does not say which openings used sliding doors, hinged doors or hermetic doors. It also does not identify the applicable national building-code clauses, fire compartments, pressure regimes or room classifications. Those decisions belong in the project door schedule and associated certification package.

Why GRP can suit a research facility
Research buildings combine ordinary circulation spaces with laboratories, support rooms, plant areas and controlled environments. Door leaves may be exposed to frequent trolley traffic, repeated washing, disinfectants, humidity and accidental impacts. A composite surface that is smooth and resistant to water and chemicals can reduce maintenance concerns compared with a porous or heavily jointed finish, provided the installed system is detailed and maintained correctly.
- Cleanability: Fewer ledges and recesses give cleaning staff fewer dust-collecting interfaces to reach.
- Moisture exposure: Dortek presents the GRP range as water resistant, a relevant consideration for wash-down or damp areas.
- Chemical exposure: Dortek says the doors resist chemicals; the project should still approve the actual disinfectants and concentrations used on site.
- Geometry: Seamless faces and carefully sealed joints can support a cleaning regime, but hinges, handles, closers, glazing beads and thresholds remain part of the hygienic design.
- Configuration choice: The same facility can require non-fire-rated doors in one zone and fire-rated doors in another, rather than one universal doorset.
Dortek’s GRP brochure also presents the doors as designed to meet GMP and cleanroom requirements. That is product literature, not proof that SAHMRI required a particular Good Manufacturing Practice rule or held a named cleanroom classification. The applicable requirement must come from the project’s room data sheets and quality plan.
What remains unknown about the SAHMRI installation
The supplier listing is useful for identifying the product family and broad split between fire-rated and non-fire-rated doors, but it is not a door schedule. The following information is not stated in the reviewed project material:
- Number of doors and the quantity in each rating or operating type.
- Exact model names, leaf thicknesses, core construction or finish colour.
- Which rooms or circulation zones received each configuration.
- Fire-resistance periods, smoke-control requirements or the certificate number for any opening.
- Whether any doors were hermetically sealing, and the measured leakage class if so.
- Frame material, wall interface, glazing, vision panels, kick plates, handles, closers or automation.
- Cleaning chemicals, maintenance intervals or measured hygiene outcomes at SAHMRI.
- Completion date, installer identity and independent inspection or commissioning records.
General Dortek webpages and technical downloads can explain how the product categories are intended to work, but they cannot fill those project-record gaps. For a definitive answer, the relevant documents would be the approved door schedule, architectural specifications, fire strategy, room data sheets, installation records and certificates tied to each doorset.

How to specify a comparable hygienic GRP doorset
An architect, laboratory planner or facilities manager can avoid ambiguity by treating the door as a complete assembly and recording requirements opening by opening.
- Classify the space. Record whether the opening serves a laboratory, write-up area, corridor, plant room, storage room, cleanroom or pressure-controlled suite. Note traffic, trolley dimensions and expected wash-down frequency.
- Set the fire requirement. Use the fire strategy and compartment drawings to define whether the opening needs a tested fire-resisting doorset. Record the required duration and smoke-control conditions rather than writing only “fire-rated.”
- Define hygiene and cleaning exposure. List the cleaning agents, dilution ranges, contact times and water exposure that the operator actually uses. Ask the manufacturer for compatibility evidence for those conditions.
- Choose operation and size. Select hinged or sliding operation, clear opening, leaf width and height, traffic direction, hold-open policy and any automatic activation. Include emergency egress and accessibility requirements.
- Specify the air-control objective. If the room depends on pressure cascades, state the required leakage class and test pressure. Do not substitute the word “hygienic” for a hermetic or air-permeability requirement.
- Detail the interfaces. Coordinate frame profile, wall build-up, seals, thresholds, skirting, glazing, vision panels, kick protection and adjacent finishes. Hygienic performance can be undermined by a poorly sealed frame or incompatible hardware.
- Request project-specific evidence. Obtain the exact fire-test classification, air-leakage report where relevant, product data sheet, installation instructions, cleaning guidance and any certification applicable to the proposed configuration.
- Plan inspection and handover. Define checks for alignment, seal continuity, closing force, latch operation, automatic controls, clearances and damage to the GRP face. Store certificates with the asset record so future replacements match the tested assembly.
This process also makes substitutions safer. A replacement door that has the same appearance but a different frame, seal or hardware set may not retain the original fire or leakage performance.

Dortek’s water- and chemical-resistance statements support the choice of GRP for rigorous cleaning, but a facilities team still needs operating instructions. Ask for the approved chemical list, maximum concentration, rinse requirements, contact-time limits and instructions for hinges, seals, glazing and automation. Confirm how scratches, chips and failed sealant are repaired without creating a dirt trap.
Establish an inspection frequency based on traffic and cleaning intensity. A practical inspection should look for open joints, damaged edges, loose hardware, compressed seals, standing water at thresholds and doors that no longer close or latch consistently. Record defects by asset number and escalate any damage that could affect a fire or pressure-control function.

Questions to put to the supplier or project team
- Which exact GRP doorset model and revision is proposed for this opening?
- Is the assembly fire-rated, non-fire-rated or hermetic, and what requirement drives that choice?
- For a fire-rated opening, what test classification and certificate cover the complete leaf, frame, hardware and wall interface?
- For a pressure-controlled room, what EN 12207:2000 leakage class and test pressure apply?
- Which disinfectants and cleaning methods are approved for the face, seals and hardware?
- How are thresholds, skirtings, glazing beads and service penetrations sealed and cleaned?
- What installation tolerances, commissioning checks and maintenance intervals are required?
- Which documents will be handed over for future repairs and like-for-like replacement?
How to read the SAHMRI claim accurately
The strongest supported statement is a supply statement attributed to Dortek: the company says it supplied fire-rated and non-fire-rated hygienic GRP doors across SAHMRI. The building context comes from Architecture & Design, which reports the facility opened in November 2013 and discusses its architectural design. Neither source supplies a room-by-room schedule or independent testing results for the installation.
Dortek’s broader pages and brochure are still useful for understanding why a research facility might select GRP: smooth, seamless surfaces; no stated ledges, recesses or right angles intended to trap contaminants; and claimed resistance to water and chemicals. They also show that fire resistance and hermetic sealing are separate product choices with separate standards and evidence. Applying those general claims to a particular SAHMRI doorway requires the project documents.
