Sal Buscema, the penciler and inker whose work carried readers through decades of Marvel comics, died in January 2026 at age 89. The Comics Journal and Overstreet Access support January 24 as the date; an Inkwell Awards remembrance reported January 23. Overstreet said no cause of death was disclosed.

Who was Sal Buscema?

Born Silvio Buscema in Brooklyn on January 26, 1936, Sal was the youngest of four children and the younger brother of comic-book artist John Buscema. He attended Manhattan’s High School of Music & Art, graduating in 1955. After being drafted in 1956, he served in the U.S. Army, where he put his illustration skills to work creating training materials. He later worked in commercial art and advertising, including for government agencies, before turning more seriously to comics in 1968.

His brother helped introduce him to Marvel. Sal began with assignments that included Western stories and inking other artists’ pencils. His first published Marvel work included inking John’s art on Silver Surfer and Larry Lieber’s on Rawhide Kid.

What comics did Sal Buscema draw?

Buscema became one of Marvel’s most dependable artists, working as both a penciler and an inker. The Comics Journal describes more than 30 years of work across Marvel’s line and a 10-year run as artist on The Incredible Hulk. Overstreet Access records a 100-issue run on The Spectacular Spider-Man from 1988 to 1996.

Series or credit What the record says
The Incredible Hulk A 10-year run as artist, according to The Comics Journal (2026).
The Spectacular Spider-Man A 100-issue run from 1988 to 1996, according to Overstreet Access (2026).
Other representative Marvel titles The Avengers, Captain America, The Defenders, Rom, Thor and The New Mutants.

His collaborators included writers Steve Englehart, Bill Mantlo, Roy Thomas, Steve Gerber, Jim Shooter and Gerry Conway. Published accounts credit Buscema and collaborators—not Buscema alone—with characters and teams including Squadron Sinister, Llyra, Starhawk, Graviton, the U-Foes and the Soviet Super-Soldiers.

What made his storytelling distinctive?

The Comics Journal points to Buscema’s narrative pacing, bodies in motion, uncluttered panels and clear transitions. Those qualities helped make his pages easy to follow without sacrificing energy: action could move quickly, while the sequence of images kept the reader oriented.

Buscema once called his Hulk work “probably one of the most enjoyable experiences of my career,” adding that the Hulk was his all-time favorite character and that he “never tired of the character.” His affection for the series came through in a long assignment that became one of the defining stretches of his career.

What did he do beyond Marvel?

Buscema also worked for DC, beginning in 1997. Overstreet records him penciling Batman, Superman and Superboy, and inking stories featuring Wonder Woman and Green Arrow. He later did inking work for Marvel and IDW.

His honors included the Inkpot Award in 2003, the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, induction into the Overstreet Hall of Fame in 2019 and the Inkwell Awards’ Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award in 2021.

How colleagues remembered him

Artist Erik Larsen, quoted by El País, remembered Buscema as someone editors could call on when another artist fell behind: “Sal era de esos a los que recurrías cuando alguien más fallaba, podía sacar un número sólido en un largo fin de semana y cumplir con la fecha de entrega.” Larsen’s recollection emphasizes a practical part of Buscema’s legacy: the ability to deliver clear, solid storytelling under deadline.

Artist Sterling Clark, also quoted by El País, recalled how frequently Buscema’s name appeared in the comics he read as a child: “Cuando pienso en mi infancia y en todos los cómics que leí, el nombre de Sal parece haber aparecido en prácticamente todos.” The breadth of Buscema’s assignments helps explain that impression: readers could encounter his work across different heroes, teams and genres.

How old was Sal Buscema, and when did he die?

Buscema was 89. The Comics Journal’s account, published January 29, 2026, describes his death as occurring on Friday, two days before his January 26 birthday; Overstreet Access, published January 27, gives January 24. The Inkwell Awards remembrance, also published January 27, repeats a January 23 report attributed to artist Sterling Clark and information from Buscema’s wife. The accounts therefore differ by a day; the more detailed date references support January 24. Overstreet Access said the cause of death was not disclosed.

Where to start reading his work

Readers interested in Buscema’s art can start with the long Incredible Hulk or Spectacular Spider-Man runs, or choose another title that matches their interests. For a collected edition, check its contents issue by issue and confirm that Buscema is credited for the art; a series title alone does not establish which issues or contributors an edition includes.
