San Diego Comic-Con’s 2026 Art Show rules prohibit work created wholly or partly with artificial intelligence. The restriction applies to the Art Show—not, based on the published rule, to every part of the convention. The change followed artist objections to an earlier policy, according to 404 Media.
What the 2026 Art Show rule says
The official San Diego Comic-Con 2026 Art Show rules state: “Material created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) either partially or wholly, is not allowed in the art show.” The same rules give the Art Show Coordinator final say on questions of acceptability.

That wording covers both wholly AI-created material and work made partly with AI. It does not specify how the coordinator will determine whether a particular piece falls under the rule.
What changed from the earlier policy
According to 404 Media’s reporting, the earlier policy had been in place since at least 2024. It reportedly allowed AI-generated work in the Art Show if it was clearly identified as AI-produced and not offered for sale; work made with a style prompt also had to be described accordingly. After artists objected, the website’s published rule changed to prohibit AI-created material, whether partial or complete.

Comic and concept artist Tiana Oreglia told 404 Media that Comic-Con’s earlier friendly approach to AI was a “slippery slope towards normalization.” That is Oreglia’s view, not a reason Comic-Con has officially given for the rule change. The available official wording establishes the prohibition but does not state why it was adopted.
Where the ban applies—and what it does not establish
The rule is specifically for the official Comic-Con Art Show. The published rule does not establish a blanket ban on AI use throughout the convention, or set out rules for Artist Alley, exhibitor booths, or convention merchandise. It also does not say how the organizer will assess AI assistance in an individual artwork.

For anyone asking whether AI images can be sold at the Con, the answer supported by these sources is limited to the Art Show: the old policy reportedly allowed labeled AI work only if it was not for sale, while the current rule prohibits AI-created material altogether. The sources do not establish what rules apply to sales or displays in other convention areas.

San Diego Comic-Con’s official Art Show page lists the event at the Manchester Grand Hyatt from July 23–26, 2026. The organizer also describes the convention as drawing “well over 135,000 attendees” in 2025; that is the organizer’s approximate figure, not an audited count.
Quick Recap
How to check the rule for a specific artwork
- Confirm that the question concerns the official Art Show, rather than assuming the same policy applies across the convention.
- Read the current Art Show rules for the relevant event year.
- If a work involves any AI-generated material or you are unsure how the rule applies, contact the Art Show Coordinator, who has final authority on acceptability under the published rules.
