Saraswati Puja honors Saraswati, a Hindu goddess associated with learning, wisdom, music and the arts. It is commonly observed on Vasant Panchami, also called Shri Panchami, in the lunar month of Magha. The date and puja timing vary by year and location, and customs differ among communities.
What is Saraswati Puja?
Saraswati Puja is an observance dedicated to Saraswati. Government of India descriptions associate her with knowledge, learning, wisdom, music and performing arts. The festival also has a seasonal connection: the Library of Congress’s Folklife Today overview describes Vasant Panchami in relation to spring and Saraswati, and records a traditional song performed for the goddess.
When is Saraswati Puja?
The observance is linked to Vasant Panchami or Shri Panchami in Magha, usually falling in January or February. The Ministry of Tourism’s Kolkata event description gives that seasonal context. The exact Gregorian date and puja window are not universal: they depend on the Panchami tithi and local calendar calculations. Check a location-specific panchang or the relevant temple’s guidance for the year you plan to observe it.

Is there one required way to observe Saraswati Puja?
The cited descriptions document particular regional practices, not an exhaustive guide to Hindu observance. They do not establish one required puja procedure, a universal dress color or a mandatory list of items. In Kolkata, the government event page mentions books placed near a statue or picture of Saraswati; whether and how to observe at home is a matter for local, family or community tradition.
