What changed between the before and after
The most consequential decision was not a demolition. The existing kitchen layout stayed where it was, while the island was enlarged to provide substantially more storage and seating. If you are painting adjacent walls, choose a white with a similar undertone to the cabinetry. A cool blue-white beside warm oak can make the join look accidental. Test sample boards in morning and evening light before committing, and allow for the colour of the benchtop and tile grout.
Details that make flat-pack look custom
A curved breakfast-bar edge
The project uses a curve where the breakfast bar meets the open dining area. Curving that transition removes a hard corner from a busy circulation route and gives the island a furniture-like profile. It also changes how many people can pass around the island, so mark the proposed radius on the floor with tape before ordering panels or a benchtop.
A curve is a visual choice, not a substitute for clearance planning. Check door swings, appliance openings, stool legroom and the path from the cooking zone to the dining table. Have the benchtop fabricator confirm which curves can be cut in the selected material; the article does not state a specific benchtop product or radius.
Finger (Kitkat) tiles
The narrow vertical tiles used in the feature create a strong upward line. That can make a low or small splashback feel taller, but the many grout joints require careful layout and cleaning. Set out the tile field from a visible centreline, decide how the pattern finishes at corners and align it with cabinet divisions where possible.
Order enough tile for cuts and breakages after confirming the actual area. Do not assume a tile labelled “finger” has the same width, depth or recommended adhesive as another brand; follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and check whether the surface needs a flexible grout.

Timber framing and a handrail handle
For a distinctive pantry pull, the article describes a Tasmanian oak handrail cut in half. This is an idea for a custom detail, not a named product specification. A handrail section may need sanding, sealing and hardware reinforcement before it is suitable for repeated door use. Confirm the door thickness, screw length and hinge clearance, and seal every exposed end grain against kitchen moisture.
Timber cabinet framing needs the same attention to movement. Walls and ceilings

Timber trim and the custom handle
Identify whether the timber is bare, previously coated or factory-finished. Bare oak generally needs a suitable primer or sealer before paint; a sound existing coating needs cleaning, deglossing and an adhesion-tested primer. If you want the grain visible, use a clear finish compatible with kitchen humidity instead of opaque paint. Sand between coats only as the product instructions require, and allow the full cure time before fitting handles or leaning objects against the surface.
Do not paint flexible joints or moving hardware. Use a paintable kitchen-and-bath sealant where wall meets trim, and a flexible, colour-matched sealant at changes of plane. Hard filler in a moving joint will crack and make a new renovation look unfinished.

Cabinet doors
The featured makeover is described as white-and-timber, but it does not identify a door model, coating system or whether the doors were repainted. If you repaint existing doors, remove them, label hinges and hardware, clean off grease, lightly abrade the surface and test the complete primer-and-topcoat system on one door. Spraying can produce a smoother result, while careful roller application is more accessible on site; either method requires dust control and adequate curing time.

Assuming the island can simply be doubled
A larger island changes circulation, lighting, power access and the visual weight of the room. Tape it out at full scale and check every appliance door before ordering.
Treating a price range as a contract
The published ranges are dated 2023 editorial estimates. Separate cabinetry from installation, benchtop, tiles, painting, services, delivery and contingency in your worksheet.
Mixing unrelated whites and woods
