Which cloth fits the job?
For fingerprints on stainless-steel appliances
Choose the Scotch-Brite Stainless Steel Cleaning Cloth when the task is removing fingerprints and smudges from stainless-steel surfaces. 3M specifically names kitchen appliances and related stainless-steel surfaces. Its product page says the cloth can be used without chemicals or water, is reusable and machine washable, rinses and wrings easily, and dries quickly: product details from 3M.
That description makes it a focused finishing cloth for refrigerator doors, ovens, dishwashers and other stainless-steel panels where visible handling marks are the problem. It does not establish that the cloth is suitable for every metal, painted panel, stone surface, coated finish or delicate material. If the appliance maker limits the materials or methods that may be used, follow those instructions first.
For dirt, grease, dust and smudges across hard surfaces
Scotch-Brite High Performance Cloth 2011 is a separate product. Its March 2020 technical data sheet describes microfiber ribbon-shaped fibers in a knit construction intended to lift and trap dirt and grease. The sheet says it may be used with or without cleaning solutions and is suited to smudges and fingerprints. This model is the more relevant description when your work involves general hard-surface wiping and a mixture of dust, grease and handling marks. “Microfiber” alone is not a guarantee of suitability for every finish; the technical sheet’s stated applications are the boundary of what can be claimed here.

- Rinse and wring the cloth after use. 3M describes the cloth as easy to rinse and wring. Remove loosened soil before storing it for the next job.
- Launder according to the care label. The product is described as machine washable. Use the instructions supplied with the cloth for the actual wash cycle and any restrictions.
- Allow it to dry. 3M says it dries quickly. Store it only after it is dry, so the reusable cloth is ready for the next stainless-steel touch-up.
The published description does not establish a required detergent, water temperature, drying temperature or number of wash cycles. Do not invent those settings; use the package or product-label instructions for the cloth you receive.
Using High Performance Cloth 2011
- Identify the soil and surface. This cloth is described for dirt, grease, dust, smudges and fingerprints on hard surfaces. Check that the surface is within the technical sheet’s intended use.

1. Name the visible problem
If the problem is isolated fingerprints on a stainless-steel appliance, start with the stainless-steel cloth. If the job combines grease, dust and smudges on several hard surfaces, examine the High Performance Cloth 2011 description first.
2. Name the surface

5. Confirm the exact item before purchase
Record the product name, model number or SKU, pack quantity and any stated surface limitation from the seller’s listing. A generic “Scotch-Brite cloth” label is not enough to identify the intended product.
What to verify with Adept Industrial Solutions
The title of this article names Adept Industrial Solutions, but a current Adept-owned listing was not verified.
