You can turn leftover fabric into a scrappy table topper as a strip-pieced runner, a charm-square rectangle, or a small quilt made from mixed scraps or a motif. Each format uses a quilt top, batting, and backing, followed by quilting and an edge finish; choose based on the scraps you have and the shape you want.
Before buying supplies, check your fabric, batting, backing, and binding remnants. Pattern quantities and finished sizes vary, so use the instructions for your chosen project rather than treating one example as a general formula.
Choose a project to match your scraps
| Project option | Scraps that fit | Construction and finish | Pattern-specific example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strip-pieced runner | Long strips cut to a repeated size | Sew strips successively onto batting, add backing, square the piece, and bind | Fairfield World specifies 23 strips measuring 2.5 by 16 inches for its runner |
| Charm-square topper | Five-inch squares or fabric that can be cut into squares | Arrange and piece the squares, layer with batting and backing, and baste | AllPeopleQuilt’s Scrappy Charm Squares finishes at 18.5 by 23 inches |
| Tiny mixed-scrap quilt | Assorted small pieces | Piece a mini quilt and finish with traditional binding or a pillowcase technique | Janome describes both finishing options for its Tiny Scrappy Quilt |
| Motif-based mini quilt | Scraps suitable for piecing a repeated motif | Piece the motif units into a small quilt, then layer and finish | Diary of a Quilter’s maple-leaf tutorial uses four scrap-pieced leaves for an approximately 19-inch square mini quilt |
These examples show different ways to use scraps; the sources do not establish that one option is faster, easier, or more durable than another.

What can I make with leftover fabric scraps?
Start by sorting scraps by shape and usable size. Long pieces can suit a strip-pieced runner, while repeated squares support a measured patchwork layout. Mixed small pieces can become an improvised mini quilt or be pieced into motifs, such as the maple leaves in Diary of a Quilter’s tutorial.

Materials and quantities vary by pattern
Most of these projects use a pieced top, batting, backing, thread, and an edge finish. Binding fabric is needed for patterns that use traditional binding; a pillowcase finish is an alternative described in Janome’s tiny-quilt instructions. Check your stash for batting and backing offcuts before buying more.

- Inventory and sort. Set aside usable scraps, batting, backing, and binding remnants. Group fabric by shape or size, then decide which project format suits the pieces.
- Choose a pattern and confirm its requirements. Check the finished size, cutting dimensions, materials, seam instructions, and edge finish before cutting.
- Arrange the top. Plan the strip order, square layout, mixed-scrap arrangement, or motif placement before sewing. Change the layout while pieces are still loose if you want a different balance.
- Piece the top. Follow the pattern’s sequence and seam instructions. Fairfield World’s runner, for example, attaches strips successively to the batting using 1/4-inch seams.
- Layer and baste as directed. Add the batting and backing in the order specified by the pattern. AllPeopleQuilt’s charm-square instructions call for layering the top, batting, and backing and basting.
- Finish the quilt. Quilt and square the piece as instructed, then use the specified edge finish. Fairfield World’s runner uses binding; Janome presents traditional binding and a pillowcase technique as options for its tiny quilt.
Tools: helpful, not always required
Fairfield World lists a sewing machine, rotary cutter, mat, scissors, iron, and basic supplies for its strip runner. A quilting ruler is listed as optional. These are the tools for that project, not a requirement that every small quilt be made with the same equipment.
