For Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe, seven especially rewarding works to seek out in the 2026 exhibition were Ocean Odyssey, Suddenly Everything’s Changed, Posidonia Meadows, The Breath of Aeolus, The Thinker, Into the Unknown and Balga boola – Bigsmob Balga. This is an editorial selection, not an official ranking. The 2026 exhibition has ended; the organiser lists the next Cottesloe exhibition for 5–22 March 2027.
When was the 2026 Cottesloe exhibition?
The 2026 exhibition ran until Monday 23 March, according to the organiser’s official video page. The organiser’s current Cottesloe page lists 5–22 March 2027 for the next edition. The official sources cited here do not consistently establish the 2026 opening date, so a complete date range for that past show cannot be confirmed from them.
The organiser reported 70 installed sculptures by artists from eight countries in its 7 March 2026 opening announcement. The seven works below offer different ways to approach a large outdoor exhibition: participation, natural materials, motion, access, personal reflection and cultural knowledge.
Seven artworks to look for
1. Ocean Odyssey — Dr Subodh Kerkar (India)
The organiser describes Ocean Odyssey as a colourful interactive performance that invited visitors to join a choreographed formation. It provides the shortlist’s clearest invitation to take part, as well as a point of entry to Kerkar’s theme of ocean civilisation. The invitation applies to this work and performance; it is not permission to interact with other sculptures. The organiser’s news archive has details.

2. Suddenly Everything’s Changed — Stephen Tepper (WA)
Tepper’s work received the 2026 Alcoa Aluminium Sculpture Award, worth $10,000 for that year’s exhibition, according to the organiser’s award announcement. Its subject is explored through the sculptural form of shell skeletons, with attention to their geometry, mechanics, ecology and evolution. The award offers one reason to seek it out; the shell-inspired subject gives another.
3. Posidonia Meadows — Stephanie De Biasi (WA)
De Biasi’s seagrass-inspired kinetic sculpture uses more than 10,000 used wine lids, as described in the organiser’s 2026 education resource. That resource lists aluminium wine bottle caps, steel wire and canvas among its materials, and gives dimensions of 200 × 850 × 300 cm. De Biasi describes the environmental connection behind reusing discarded material: “By transforming discarded materials into something visually engaging, I highlight the connection between everyday consumption and environmental impact.”

4. The Breath of Aeolus — Leonardo Cumbo (Italy)
Cumbo’s work brings together white Carrara marble, bronze, stainless steel and red paint. Its bubble-like form, lifted with weights and ropes, makes an invisible force—wind—feel almost tangible. The education resource gives its dimensions as 335 × 160 × 370 cm. Cumbo writes that “the driving force behind my sculptures is often that invisible force, arising from natural phenomena or our imagination.”
5. The Thinker — Julian Pereira and David Da Costa Enes (NSW)
Made from steel sheets and pipes, The Thinker addresses disabled experience and the continuing struggle for accessibility, equity and inclusion. The artists state: “The Thinker raises awareness of the disabled experience and its ongoing struggle for accessibility, equity and inclusion.” Its subject also invites visitors to consider who can navigate and use public spaces, without reducing disability to an inspirational story.

6. Into the Unknown — Gleb Dusavitskiy (Denmark)
Dusavitskiy frames this work around courage and the instant between hesitation and action. Its construction draws attention to wood grain, strength, balance and weight distribution—practical forces that shape how a sculpture stands. Together, the artist’s reflection and the work’s physical engineering offer two useful ways to read it.
7. Balga boola – Bigsmob Balga (2024) — Sharyn Egan (WA)
The organiser’s education resource lists straw, thread and synthetic wool as materials and connects Egan’s practice with Wadjuk Noongar experience, local place and weaving. It explains that balga, or grass trees, have important uses as tools and shelter in Noongar culture. Egan writes: “In Nyoongar culture the Balga (grass trees) have important uses as tools and shelter.” This is one work grounded in a particular artist’s practice and cultural context, not a stand-in for Noongar art as a whole.
