You can sell existing photographs online by licensing them through stock marketplaces, but “passive income” is conditional rather than guaranteed. Your payout depends on the buyer’s license, subscription or plan, platform rules, contributor tier, and how often your images are downloaded. The published royalty percentages below describe payment mechanics—not a typical monthly income or a promise that any portfolio will sell.
Where can you sell photos online?
The main choices covered here are Adobe Stock, Shutterstock Contributor, and Alamy. They all license images, but their percentages are calculated on different bases and may be affected by tiers, exclusivity, distribution, or license type.
| Platform | Published contributor payment basis | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Stock | 33% for standard photos, vectors, and illustrations; 35% for standard video, calculated on the net price attributable to the licensed item under standard arrangements. Adobe’s royalty details | Free, non-exclusive submission; contributors must be at least 18 and the sole owner of submitted content. Adobe says creators retain control of their work. Contributor information |
| Shutterstock Contributor | Six image earnings levels ranging from 15% to 40% of the price Shutterstock receives for the specific license. Shutterstock’s earnings article | The buyer’s plan and license price affect the amount. Your level resets to level 1 every January 1. Earnings Structure FAQ |
| Alamy | Share depends on the contributor contract tier and licensing/distribution model. Current contract material includes a 50% share for qualifying Platinum contributors whose images are exclusive to Alamy. Distribution options pay 20% or 40% of the amount Alamy receives after distributor commission, depending on the model. Alamy contributor contract | Rights-managed and royalty-free licenses work differently. Contributors retain copyright. Most photos from main-brand smartphones released in 2020 or later can be submitted through its smartphone workflow, subject to quality control. Alamy contributor page |
These figures are not an apples-to-apples ranking. Compare the customer price, net or gross calculation, tier requirements, annual resets, exclusivity, licensing model, metadata workload, and the kinds of images each marketplace accepts.
How much will you be paid as a contributor?
No official source reviewed publishes a typical contributor’s monthly or annual income. A royalty rate is not an earnings forecast: an image must be licensed, and the amount for each license can vary substantially.

Adobe Stock rates and minimums
Adobe Stock’s rate page, last updated July 13, 2026, lists 33% for photos, vectors, and illustrations and 35% for video. The percentage is applied to the net price attributed to a licensed item under standard arrangements; non-standard plans may use the stated percentage of the attributable amount or a flat rate. For standard content licensed through Adobe’s large subscription (350 or more standard pieces per month), Adobe lists minimum royalties of $0.33 for contributors with 0–999 lifetime licenses, $0.36 for 1,000–9,999, and $0.38 for 10,000 or more. Those minimums apply only to that subscription context, not to every Adobe download. See Adobe’s current terms.
Shutterstock’s tiered percentage
Shutterstock states that earnings for an image download are a percentage of the price paid by the customer for that license. Its six image levels run from 15% to 40%, and levels reset to level 1 on January 1. Because the customer’s plan and license price also matter, reaching a higher percentage does not by itself reveal the cash value of a download. Read Shutterstock’s Earnings Structure FAQ.
Alamy’s contract and license variables
Alamy’s rights-managed (RM) licenses can price an image according to where, how, when, or how long it is used. Its royalty-free (RF) description refers to a one-off fee covering use across multiple projects. Your contract tier, exclusivity choice, and whether a distributor is involved determine the share you receive, so inspect the current contract before opting into exclusive or distribution arrangements.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat “passive” means in stock photography
After an accepted image is online, it can generate additional licenses without another shoot. That is the passive element. The income is not automatic: you still need discoverable images, accurate releases and metadata, platform approval, and buyers whose needs match your files. Uploading a large batch does not establish a predictable return, and the available terms do not establish a guaranteed or typical income.
How to start selling your existing photos
- Audit ownership and permissions. Submit only work you own or are authorized to license. Obtain model releases for recognizable people and property releases where a marketplace requires them. Adobe requires the contributor to be the sole owner of submitted content.
- Choose a licensing mix. Decide whether you want broad royalty-free distribution, rights-managed pricing, or a combination. Read exclusivity language before placing the same image under an exclusive contract.
- Prepare technically sound files. Remove accidental logos, distracting marks, dust, and unsafe personal information. Keep original files and release records so you can answer a review query later.
- Open contributor accounts. Adobe describes uploading as free and non-exclusive. Alamy’s first submission asks for three best images and valid camera EXIF data on each.
- Upload with useful metadata. Write a precise caption and add relevant search terms. Alamy says images generally go on sale after quality control and after a caption plus at least five tags are added.
- Review approvals and earnings. Record which files pass, which are rejected, and which subjects receive licenses. Use that evidence to refine future uploads rather than assuming a published percentage predicts results.
How to choose the best site for your portfolio
Choose Adobe Stock when
- You want a non-exclusive marketplace and are comfortable with a published percentage tied to the net attributable price.
- Your portfolio includes commercially useful photos, vectors, or illustrations and you can meet Adobe’s ownership and age requirements.
- You understand that the listed $0.33–$0.38 minimums apply only to the specified large-subscription standard-content tiers.
Choose Shutterstock when
- You prefer a defined six-level image earnings system and can monitor progress despite the January 1 reset.
- You are prepared for the payout to change with both your level and the customer’s plan or license price.
Choose Alamy when
- Your work may suit editorial or specialist licensing where usage, territory, duration, and placement affect value.
- You want to consider RM and RF options, smartphone submissions, or a contract tier that rewards qualifying exclusivity.
- You are willing to check distribution deductions and the exact current contributor contract before selecting a model.
Smartphone photography and submission requirements
Alamy says most photos made with main-brand smartphones released in 2020 or later are accepted through its smartphone upload option, subject to quality control. The initial submission requires three images, and each must contain valid camera EXIF data. A modern phone therefore may meet the capture requirement, but acceptance still depends on image quality, metadata, and the marketplace’s review.
Ways to improve licensing potential without overspending
- Shoot for identifiable uses: leave copy space, show authentic work or home situations, and cover both horizontal and vertical compositions.
- Build depth around a subject: create variations in framing, season, lighting, and activity rather than uploading near-duplicates.
- Make metadata literal: name the subject, action, setting, location when relevant, and concepts a buyer could legitimately search.
- Protect commercial usability: clear trademarks, obtain releases, and avoid sensitive documents, license plates, or private data in frame.
- Measure your own catalog: compare accepted files, impressions, downloads, and net royalties by subject. Platform percentages cannot substitute for your portfolio’s actual performance.
Questions to check before uploading
- Who owns the copyright, and can you prove it?
- Are model or property releases required for this image and intended use?
- Is the file technically clean at the marketplace’s required resolution and quality level?
- Does an exclusive contract limit licensing elsewhere?
- Are you comparing percentages calculated on the same basis?
- Could the platform’s plan, tier reset, distributor deduction, or license type change the amount?
The Bottom Line
Adobe Stock, Shutterstock Contributor, and Alamy all provide legitimate ways to license photographs online, but none of their published percentages proves a highest-paying site or guaranteed passive income. Compare the complete payment terms with your portfolio, keep rights and metadata accurate, and treat royalties as conditional income that must be validated by your own download history.
