Seven Weeks Into a Custom Closet: Measuring Progress Before the Final Push

A seven-week custom closet project had already included cabinet construction, custom jewelry storage, trim, paint, wallpaper, lighting fixtures and ventilation—yet a drawer-heavy island still threatened the hoped-for finish date. The clearest way to see that progress is to photograph the room before and during the work.

Kristi Linauer’s May 1, 2025 progress report shows why a renovation can feel stalled even when a great deal has been completed. She began the official custom-closet build on March 12 and, seven weeks later, had built and finished the cabinet system, installed shelves and trim, added a custom jewelry drawer, painted the cabinetry, hung wallpaper, and installed a mirror and sconces. Her practical answer to the nagging question of whether a project is really moving is simple: photograph the room before work starts and throughout the build.

The closet was not finished when she wrote the update. A scratch-built island with many drawers remained the largest schedule risk, lighting work was next, and her hope of finishing by the end of May was not confirmed. That combination—substantial visible progress, a demanding final feature, and an uncertain completion date—is the useful lesson for anyone managing a long renovation.

What the May 1 update actually records

Linauer’s post, “A Look Back Before The Final Push Forward,” was dated May 1, 2025, and the page shows an update date of May 26, 2025. The project history reaches back farther than the closet itself. Near the end of the previous year, she and her mother cleared bedroom belongings and removed the two closets flanking a window. Contractor difficulties and a later flooring installation came before the custom closet work.

She identifies March 12 as the official start of the closet build—the day she built the first cabinet for the washer. On May 1, she described the work as seven weeks underway. That is an elapsed-time description from the homeowner, not an independently measured construction schedule.

Point in the project What Linauer reports How to read it
Near the end of the prior year Bedroom items were cleared and the two closets beside a window were removed. This was preparation for the wider bedroom-suite work, before the official closet-build clock began.
March 12, 2025 The first washer cabinet was built. Linauer treats this as day one of the closet project.
May 1, 2025 The build had been underway for seven weeks. The report is a progress snapshot, not a completion announcement.
May 26, 2025 The page displays this update date. The available material still does not confirm when the closet was finished.

This distinction matters when a renovation has several overlapping phases. Demolition, flooring, cabinet fabrication, finishing, electrical work and decorating may all belong to one room transformation, but the builder may reasonably count only one of those phases as the start of a particular build.

Why a project can feel slow while work is happening

Custom work hides progress because many hours go into parts that are eventually covered, aligned or repeated. A run of cabinet boxes can take shape without making the room look finished. Trimming, caulking, sanding and painting add more time while changing the appearance only gradually. Installing a mirror or sconces can be a short task in comparison with cabinet fabrication, yet those items may make the room suddenly look more complete.

Linauer’s list at the seven-week mark demonstrates that contrast. She was no longer at the “nothing is happening” stage, but she was also not at the final inspection stage. The work occupied several different trades and visual layers:

  • Structural cabinet boxes and shelves had been built.
  • Cabinet trim, decorative molding and corbels had been added.
  • A glass-top jewelry drawer and a pull-out necklace bar had been made.
  • The cabinets had been primed, caulked, sanded and painted.
  • Wallpaper, a mirror and sconces had been installed.
  • The floor perimeter had been sanded before cabinet baseboards were attached.
  • A dryer vent had been installed.

Looking only at the unfinished island or the remaining lighting can therefore give a misleading impression. A progress record needs to show completed work as well as the conspicuous items still missing.

What had been completed by week seven

Cabinet construction and storage details

The foundation was the cabinet system itself. Linauer says the cabinet boxes and shelves were built, then trimmed. That sequence is important: boxes establish the storage volume and layout, while trim makes the installation read as finished furniture rather than a collection of plain cases.

The project also included details tailored to the room’s use. A glass-top jewelry drawer and a pull-out necklace bar are not generic placeholders; they are custom storage features that require decisions about access and visibility. Their inclusion helps explain why a handmade closet can take longer than installing standard units.

Finish carpentry and surface preparation

Decorative molding and corbels were part of the finish-carpentry stage. Linauer also lists priming, caulking, sanding and painting the cabinets. For a painted built-in, these steps are separate operations, not interchangeable words for “painted.” Primer prepares the surface, caulk closes selected joints, sanding smooths the work between stages, and paint supplies the final coating. The report does not identify paint brands, colors, products or application methods, so those details should not be inferred.

  • RODS OPTIONAL: Utilize the storage tower and closet shelving without attaching hang rods for alternative purposes or organization in spots where space is limited; Hang rods can be attached on both sides or along one single side as needed

She also sanded the floor perimeter before attaching the cabinet baseboards. That detail shows how adjacent surfaces affect sequence: floor-edge preparation had to happen before a low trim piece could be fixed in place. A small perimeter task can be essential even though it is easy to overlook in a room-wide photograph.

Wallpaper, mirror, sconces and ventilation

Wallpaper, a mirror and sconces had been hung by the update. These elements change the room’s visual character, but they also sit within a larger installation order. The dryer vent was another completed item, one that is functional rather than decorative. Recessed lights and a chandelier are mentioned as project elements elsewhere in the post, while lighting work is identified as the next step; the report does not provide a complete installation schedule for every fixture.

How this pace compares with Linauer’s earlier projects

Linauer compares the closet with two earlier personal projects. She says her scratch-built pantry took about three and a half months and was approximately half the closet’s size. She says the studio took 17 months from sanding the floor to completion. These are her retrospective estimates, not industry averages, labor studies or independently verified measurements.

Project Time stated by Linauer Qualification
Custom closet Seven weeks underway on May 1, 2025 Elapsed time from her stated March 12 start; unfinished at the time of the report.
Scratch-built pantry About 3.5 months Her personal estimate; she describes it as about half the closet’s size.
Studio 17 months Her personal estimate from floor sanding to completion.

The comparison is useful for expectation-setting, not for predicting a universal schedule. Room size, custom details, available help, contractor interruptions, material lead times and the amount of work done by one person can change the calendar dramatically. A larger project is not automatically slower in a simple ratio, and a smaller room is not automatically quick.

The unfinished island was the main schedule uncertainty

When Linauer wrote the update, she had decided to stay focused on the closet instead of beginning the bedroom. She and Matt discussed using either the studio or bedroom as a temporary location for his recliner while she completed the closet. That decision creates a clear boundary: finish one disruptive room before opening another work zone.

The planned island was the task she expected could upset her hoped-for schedule. She intended to build it from scratch and anticipated that its many drawers might take longer than expected. The rest of the remaining list seemed smaller by comparison, and lighting work was next. She hoped the closet would be finished by the end of May, but the post does not confirm that result.

For a homeowner planning a similar build, the island illustrates why the last major custom component deserves its own allowance. Drawers multiply the work: each requires a box, a front, alignment, hardware and repeated fitting. Even without assigning a duration to any of those steps, the practical lesson is clear—count the complex feature separately instead of treating it as a minor add-on to the room.

Use photographs to make progress visible

Linauer’s central advice is aimed at the emotional problem as much as the documentation problem. Long renovations can prompt two recurring doubts: whether anything is actually being accomplished and whether the project will ever end. Her answer is to create a visual record. In her words, “That’s why I always encourage people to take pictures along the way.”

A useful photo record does not require professional equipment. The value comes from consistency, coverage and dates. The following method turns occasional snapshots into a progress log:

  1. Photograph the untouched room. Take wide views from each doorway and corner before demolition or installation. Include the floor, ceiling and the wall where the main built-in will sit.
  2. Repeat the same viewpoints. Return to the same corners after demolition, cabinet installation, surface preparation, painting and final trim. Matching angles make changes easier to see.
  3. Add detail views. Photograph drawer interiors, trim joints, floor edges, vents and electrical or lighting points. These are the areas most likely to disappear in a wide shot.
  4. Record dates and stages. Use the date in the file name or album caption, and identify the phase in plain language, such as “cabinet boxes,” “primer,” “sanding” or “baseboards.”
  5. Keep unfinished work in the record. A photo showing the remaining island or an uncompleted lighting point prevents the archive from becoming a collection of only successful moments.
  6. Review the sequence when motivation drops. Compare the original room with the latest matching view. The purpose is not to declare the project finished early; it is to see the accumulation of completed work accurately.

This approach also helps when several surfaces compete for attention. A painted cabinet may look unchanged from across the room, while a close photograph reveals completed caulk lines, smoother sanding or finished trim. The record gives small tasks a place in the overall story.

What painters can take from the project sequence

Although the report is about a whole closet and laundry-room project, its sequence has direct implications for painting work. Painting is one stage in a chain, and its quality depends on what happens before and after it.

Plan around adjacent work

Floor-edge sanding came before cabinet baseboards. That kind of dependency should be identified before a final coat is applied. If sanding, trim installation or vent work can disturb a painted surface, schedule those operations first or protect the finished area deliberately.

Separate preparation from coating

Linauer lists priming, caulking, sanding and painting as distinct accomplishments. A project log should preserve those distinctions. They help explain why a cabinet may occupy the work area for days without receiving its final color and help identify where a later defect originated.

Photograph repeatable evidence

For painted built-ins, use one wide photograph to show coverage and several close views to show joints, corners, trim and the relationship to wallpaper or adjacent walls. The goal is not to create a marketing portfolio; it is to give the homeowner a reliable comparison when the room is disrupted and progress is difficult to judge.

Leave the final custom element visible in the schedule

The island’s drawers were the known uncertainty in Linauer’s plan. In a painting schedule, an equivalent risk might be a large number of doors, intricate molding or a surface requiring repeated preparation. Identify that item before setting a completion date, and describe the date as a target rather than a promise when the final custom work has not been tested.

How to set a realistic final-push plan

Linauer’s decision to finish the closet before starting the bedroom offers a practical way to reduce scope creep. A final-push plan can be organized around the work that physically blocks other work:

  1. List the unfinished items by dependency. Put tasks that affect access, floors, ventilation or electrical work ahead of cosmetic touch-ups.
  2. Separate the schedule risk. Give the custom island its own line rather than hiding it under “remaining cabinetry.”
  3. Define a finish line. Decide whether “finished” means cabinets painted, lighting operational, décor installed or every punch-list item closed.
  4. Keep the next room closed. Do not begin the bedroom merely because the closet feels slow; opening another work zone can reduce usable space and attention.
  5. Use photos at each milestone. The record should show the baseline, the current state and the remaining work.

This framework does not produce a guaranteed number of days. It does produce a more honest answer to the question, “How close are we?” A room can be far along in cabinet construction while still being weeks away from a custom island and final lighting.

What the source does—and does not—establish

The available account is a first-person progress report by Kristi Linauer. It establishes her stated dates, task list, personal comparisons and intentions at the time of writing. It does not establish the project’s cost, labor hours, cabinet dimensions, hardware models, paint products, independent productivity measurements or confirmed completion date.

That limit is important when using the story as a planning example. The seven-week figure describes this homeowner’s experience from her chosen start date. The pantry and studio durations are her own estimates. None should be treated as a benchmark for a contractor, a promise for a similar closet or evidence that one construction method is faster than another.

The practical takeaway for a long renovation

A renovation can be genuinely advanced and still look unfinished because the remaining work is concentrated in one conspicuous feature. In Linauer’s case, the cabinet boxes, shelves, trim, custom jewelry storage, surface preparation, paint, wallpaper, mirror, sconces, floor-edge preparation and dryer vent were already reported as completed after seven weeks. The handmade island and lighting still controlled the end of the schedule.

Photographs provide the missing perspective. Start with the empty room, repeat the angles as work progresses, record small finish stages and keep the unfinished items in view. Then judge the project from the sequence rather than from the most obvious object still waiting to be built. That is the durable lesson behind Linauer’s look back before the final push forward.
