What the Sewing Spools Wall Quilt pattern makes
Published June 14, 2013, the pattern is designed to hang in a sewing space. Its four finished blocks measure 6 inches square; the completed wall quilt measures 19-5/8 inches square. The block units are made as 6-1/2-inch squares before assembly, including seam allowances. The original sample uses fabrics from the Winsome collection by Kim Diehl for Henry Glass & Co.
The design has three spool blocks and one sewing-machine block, separated by tan sashing and framed by a border of half-square triangles. AllPeopleQuilt’s gift-pattern index describes the project as a four-block wall hanging featuring thread-spool and sewing-machine designs.

Materials and fabric quantities
These are the quantities specified in the 2013 American Patchwork & Quilting/AllPeopleQuilt pattern:
- 1/2 yard tan print
- 3/8 yard brown print
- One 9-by-22-inch piece (fat eighth) each of blue, green, gold and red prints
- A scrap of solid black
- Four 4-by-7-inch rectangles of assorted prints
- 7/8 yard backing fabric
- One 28-inch-square piece of batting
- Brown fabric for binding strips
- A scrap of lightweight fusible web
- Lightweight tracing paper or another foundation material
The pattern’s distinct materials reflect its mixed construction: fusible web is used for appliqué, while tracing paper or another foundation material supports the foundation-pieced sewing-machine block. Lightweight fusible web is therefore the most specific supply to look for if you are gathering materials for this design.

- Mini Quilt Size 14x16in. Let Spools take center stage with this adorable Mini Quilt. Great as a wall hanging for any craft room!
How the construction works
The pattern moves from small block components to the quilt center, then to the border and finishing. The key size distinction is that blocks finish at 6 inches, while pieced block units are initially made at 6-1/2 inches square with seam allowances.
- Prepare the pattern pieces. Trace the foundation patterns and prepare the fusible-web appliqué shapes.
- Piece the spool blocks. Make six spool-end units and three thread units, then assemble them into three spool blocks.
- Build the sewing-machine block. Foundation-piece the block, remove the paper, and fuse the appliqué shapes in place.
- Assemble the quilt center. Arrange the four blocks in rows with tan sashing. Trim the center to 15-3/8 inches square, including seam allowances.
- Add the border. Make tan-and-brown half-square-triangle units, join them into border strips, and attach the strips to the center.
- Quilt and bind. Layer the top with batting and backing, baste, quilt as desired, and finish with brown binding strips.
How it compares with another spool quilt
The free AllPeopleQuilt wall hanging is a specific sewing-themed design, rather than a generic spool-block quilt: it pairs spool imagery with a sewing-machine block and uses both foundation piecing and appliqué. A separate paid pattern by Carolyn Friedlander, listed by Sewing Arts, offers Wall and Mini size options and a conventionally pieced approach described as suitable for confident beginners.
