Neither brand is a universal winner. The better choice is the specific product that matches your surface, room or exposure, desired sheen, durability and moisture requirements, color, local availability, and quoted price. Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore each sell several interior and exterior lines at different performance and price levels, so comparing a premium product from one company with an entry-level product from the other can produce a misleading verdict.
Use this guide to compare like with like, verify current technical data, estimate quantity, test color in your actual lighting, and obtain a local quote for the same number of gallons, product tier, sheen and color.

Both manufacturers publish broad product ranges and selection guidance, but the reviewed official material does not establish an independent, same-condition test showing that one brand has better coverage, durability, color accuracy, application or value across its entire portfolio. Manufacturer comparison charts and product pages are useful for narrowing choices; they are not neutral laboratory rankings.
Sherwin-Williams’ interior comparison guide discusses final appearance, washability, coverage and hide, moisture resistance and ease of application. Its exterior guide adds durability, weather resistance and fade resistance. Benjamin Moore describes performance characteristics for individual products such as Aura Interior, including color depth, hide and coverage, flow and leveling, self-priming and drying. Those are product-specific or manufacturer-described attributes, not proof that every product from one brand outperforms every product from the other.

- 3 piece value pack, includes 1 inch XL Dale, 1-1/2 inch XL Glide & 2 inch XL Sprig
- Purdy's XL is the most versatile brush series,
- Designed for use with all paints and stains.
- Ideal for interior and exterior projects with all types of paints
- Work great in all types of environments.
The sound comparison is therefore product to product, under the conditions of your job. Identify the substrate and exposure, choose an equivalent performance tier, compare the same sheen and color family, and then check local stock and price.
How the product ranges line up
Product names alone do not establish equivalence. The following table shows the lines named in the manufacturers’ selection material; it is a catalog of options, not a claim that rows are direct matches.
| Manufacturer | Interior lines named in the material | Exterior lines named in the material | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sherwin-Williams | Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, Cashmere, Harmony and ProMar 200 | Emerald, Duration, Resilience, SuperPaint, A-100 and Loxon XP | Use the company comparison guide to screen for appearance, washability, hide, moisture or weather resistance, fade resistance and application characteristics. It remains a manufacturer selection aid. |
| Benjamin Moore | Aura, Regal Select, Ben and Eco Spec | Element Guard and other exterior offerings | Read the technical data for the exact product and substrate. The named lines span different uses and performance levels. |
For example, Aura Interior is described by Benjamin Moore as its highest-quality interior paint. The page lists 350–400 square feet per gallon, one or two recommended coats, and one-hour dry and recoat times. Those figures belong to that product page and its stated conditions; they are not a head-to-head result against a particular Sherwin-Williams product. Confirm the current technical data sheet before ordering because formulations, instructions and regional availability can change.
Start with the project, not the logo
1. Identify the surface and exposure
- Interior walls and ceilings: Note whether the surface is new drywall, previously painted drywall, plaster, wood, metal or masonry. Porosity, stains, repairs and the existing coating affect primer and coverage decisions.
- Kitchens, baths and utility areas: Give priority to washability, moisture resistance, mildew guidance and a sheen appropriate for cleaning. Ventilation and cure time matter as much as the label.
- Trim, doors and cabinets: Flow, leveling, hardness, blocking resistance and the application method often matter more than a general wall-paint rating.
- Exterior siding and trim: Compare weather resistance, fade resistance, flexibility, adhesion and substrate compatibility. Sun exposure, climate and preparation can dominate service life.
2. Define the performance requirement
Write down what the coating must do before you compare labels: hide a dark color, tolerate frequent washing, resist humidity, bridge minor texture, withstand driving rain, retain color in strong sun, or apply smoothly with a particular roller or sprayer. A premium interior line may be unnecessary in a low-traffic ceiling, while an exterior or high-use surface can justify a higher tier.

3. Choose the sheen before comparing prices
Flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss are not interchangeable. Sheen changes appearance, cleanability, reflection of surface defects and often the product price. Request quotes for the same sheen; comparing a flat gallon with a semi-gloss gallon does not answer a value question.
4. Decide whether color is exact or approximate
If you need a named color from one manufacturer, buy that color in the same system whenever possible. If you are matching an existing wall or a color from the other brand, treat the result as an approximation until you sample it in place.
A practical, like-for-like comparison worksheet
Fill in both columns using current product data sheets and a local retailer quote. If a value is not stated for both products under comparable conditions, leave the comparison unresolved rather than inferring a winner.
| Comparison field | Sherwin-Williams candidate | Benjamin Moore candidate | What makes it comparable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact product and edition | Record the full line and interior or exterior designation. | Record the full line and interior or exterior designation. | Both products must be intended for the same use. |
| Surface and preparation | Record substrate, primer and repair conditions. | Record substrate, primer and repair conditions. | Coverage and adhesion depend on preparation. |
| Sheen | Record the selected sheen. | Record the selected sheen. | Compare identical or functionally equivalent sheen. |
| Coverage and coats | Use the current technical sheet; not stated in the reviewed material for a matched comparison. | Aura Interior lists 350–400 sq. ft. per gallon and one or two coats on its current page. | Do not treat different test conditions or coat recommendations as a brand-wide statistic. |
| Dry and recoat time | Use the current product sheet and job conditions. | Aura Interior lists one-hour dry and recoat times on its current page. | Temperature, humidity, film thickness and ventilation can change actual timing. |
| Washability, moisture and weather performance | Check the exact line’s data and warranty language. | Check the exact line’s data and warranty language. | Use the requirement for your room or exposure, not a general brand reputation. |
| Local price and stock | Obtain a quote from a nearby company-owned store. | Obtain a quote from an authorized local retailer. | Match gallons, tint, sheen, product tier and date. |
Where you buy changes the decision
Sherwin-Williams stores and online account tools
Sherwin-Williams says its branded products are sold exclusively through more than 4,900 company-owned stores. The company also describes mySW as providing 24/7 access to color and product support, ordering, payment and invoices. Store-level inventory, tinting capability, pickup timing and local service still need to be confirmed for your address.

Benjamin Moore’s authorized-retailer network
Benjamin Moore says its U.S. and Canadian products are sold through locally owned and operated paint, decorating and hardware retailers. Those retailers generally set their own prices and decide whether to offer coupons or promotions. A price seen in one town, province or state is not a universal Benjamin Moore price.
Because the channels differ, availability and advice can be decisive. Ask both sellers whether the exact line, sheen and color are in stock, whether the product can be tinted immediately, what return or unopened-can policy applies, and whether the quoted amount includes the same number of gallons.

Request an equal specification
- Give each seller the same room dimensions or measured surface area.
- Specify the same substrate, preparation level, color family, sheen and number of coats.
- Ask for the full product name and the number of gallons, not only a total price.
- Separate paint, primer, tinting, delivery and labor in the quote.
- Record the quote date and any promotion’s expiration or eligibility requirements.
Benjamin Moore’s retailer model means coupons and promotions can vary by store. Sherwin-Williams promotions and store pricing can also change. Do not turn a temporary discount or a single local quote into a permanent brand ranking.
Understand the lifecycle example correctly
Sherwin-Williams presents a hypothetical illustration of $64 in estimated annual savings. The example assumes 20 gallons of exterior latex, a lower-grade product priced at $30 per gallon with six years of service, and a higher-quality product priced at $45 per gallon with 25 years of service. It excludes labor and maintenance. This is a company example, not a measured comparison of Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore, a guarantee of service life, or a current price quote. Use the same calculation only after you have realistic local prices and a defensible service-life assumption for your substrate and climate.

Coverage and paint quantity: a safer estimating method
Manufacturers’ spread rates are planning figures. Porous or rough surfaces, repairs, dramatic color changes, application method, temperature and operator technique can increase consumption. Measure each wall, subtract large openings, and add ceilings, trim or doors separately.
- Calculate each paintable rectangle’s area and add the results.
- Divide by the exact product’s stated coverage per gallon under its stated conditions.
- Multiply for the planned number of coats.
- Add allowance for texture, repairs, color transition and future touch-ups.
- Round to the retailer’s available package size and confirm the estimate with the store or painter.
As a concrete reference, Benjamin Moore’s current Aura Interior page lists 350–400 square feet per gallon and recommends one or two coats. That range should not be substituted for a Sherwin-Williams spread rate, and it should not be applied to every substrate or color. Use the current technical sheet for the product you actually buy.

Color matching: what is possible and what is not guaranteed
Benjamin Moore’s FAQ answers the question “Can Sherwin-Williams match Benjamin Moore paint colors?” with the sentence: “To put it simply, no.” That is Benjamin Moore’s stated position, based on its explanation that color consistency relies on its paint and Gennex colorant together. It is not independent testing proving that no retailer can ever produce a visually close match. Tinting systems, bases, lighting, sheen and application can all affect the result.
When you need an existing color
- Bring a clean, sizable sample or a removable chip from the existing surface; a small, faded fragment is less reliable.
- Tell the retailer the original brand, product, sheen and approximate age if known.
- Have the color read or formulated in the product you intend to use.
- Paint a large test area or use a physical sample and let it dry fully.
- View it in morning, afternoon and artificial light before buying the full quantity.
Benjamin Moore describes physical paint samples and peel-and-stick color samples as options. Availability depends on the current catalog and local retailer. Samples are particularly important when crossing brands or changing sheen.

Digital readers and apps
Benjamin Moore says the Datacolor ColorReader pairs by Bluetooth with its Color Portfolio app and provides readings from Benjamin Moore colors and other popular paint brands. The company says more than 3,500 colors are accessible through ColorReader in its current Canada FAQ. Treat a device reading as a starting point: confirm with a physical sample because wall texture, gloss, lighting and the reader’s placement can influence perception.
Application decisions that affect the result
Preparation comes first
- Clean grease, dust, chalking and soap residue with a surface-appropriate cleaner.
- Repair holes, cracks and failed caulk; sand glossy areas as directed.
- Prime stains, bare substrate and incompatible or uncertain coatings according to the product data sheet.
- Protect floors, hardware and adjacent surfaces; maintain ventilation within the label’s limits.
Choose tools for the coating and surface
Use a roller nap and brush suited to the substrate and paint viscosity, and follow the label for sprayer thinning or tip requirements. Sherwin-Williams lists Purdy applicators and brushes among its supplies; select a brush by paint type, surface and technique rather than assuming one model fits every job. Keep a wet edge, avoid overworking paint as it begins to set, and maintain consistent film thickness.

Respect recoat and cure time
A one-hour dry or recoat listing, such as the one on the Aura Interior page, is a product-page specification under stated conditions, not permission to close windows, wash the wall or place furniture against it immediately. Cool temperatures, high humidity, poor airflow and heavy application can extend drying and curing. Follow the current label and technical sheet.
Decision guide by common project
| Project situation | What to prioritize | How to choose between the brands |
|---|---|---|
| Low-traffic ceiling | Appropriate flat appearance, hide and economical quantity. | Compare equivalent ceiling or flat products; premium features may not repay their cost. |
| Busy hallway or family room | Washability, touch-up behavior, hide and sheen tolerance for wall defects. | Compare matched interior tiers and test the sheen on the actual wall. |
| Bathroom or humid room | Moisture guidance, mildew resistance where specified, ventilation and cleanability. | Use a product explicitly suited to the exposure; do not infer bathroom performance from the brand name. |
| Exterior siding in strong sun | Weather and fade resistance, adhesion, flexibility and substrate preparation. | Compare exterior products intended for the same siding and climate, then verify warranty and color limitations. |
| Small repair or color continuation | Exact color, existing sheen and blendability. | Use the original product if possible; otherwise sample a cross-brand match over a large area. |
| Fast-turnaround rental or sale | Stock, delivery, predictable application and documented dry/recoat instructions. | Choose the product that is available in the required quantity and can be applied within the schedule without skipping preparation. |
Questions to ask at the counter
- Is this product intended for my exact substrate and interior or exterior exposure?
- What coverage and coat count apply to my surface, color change and application method?
- Do I need a separate primer for stains, bare areas or the existing coating?
- What sheen is this quote, and what is the equivalent sheen in the other brand?
- How long should I wait before recoating, washing or replacing hardware?
- Is the color formula the manufacturer’s original color or a cross-brand match?
- How many gallons are in the quote, and what happens if I need another gallon from a different batch?
- What is in stock today, and when will a special tint or product arrive?
Bottom line for your project
Choose neither brand by reputation alone. Select two products designed for the same surface and exposure, compare their current technical data, test the color and sheen in place, and obtain equal local quotes. Sherwin-Williams offers a company-owned-store network and a broad line-up; Benjamin Moore offers a locally operated retailer network, a wide color system and product-specific options. The right answer is the product that meets your project’s performance requirements and is available at a fair, verified local price.
