Yes—if you value natural wood and are prepared to match the lumber, structure, fasteners, drainage, maintenance plan, and local rules to your site. A wood deck is not automatically the cheapest, longest-lasting, or most sustainable choice. Outdoor wood can decay or suffer insect damage when it stays damp, while a poorly detailed deck can create structural and safety problems regardless of the surface material. Compare wood options with composite decking, obtain local installed-cost estimates, and confirm permit and code requirements before committing.
What makes a wood deck a sound choice?
Wood offers a natural appearance and feel that many homeowners prefer over manufactured boards. That benefit is real, but it is only one decision axis. The better question is whether the deck can stay adequately dry, whether the selected lumber suits its exposure, whether the framing and connections can carry the loads, and whether you will perform the required cleaning and inspections.

Outdoor wood is vulnerable to fungal decay and insects when moisture is present. The U.S. Forest Service describes wood as “a versatile and sustainable building material but may be vulnerable to fungal decay and insect damage when used outdoors or otherwise subjected to moisture.” That is why pressure treatment, naturally decay-resistant lumber, drainage, flashing, and construction details matter as much as the board color.
A wood deck can be a good fit when you want a real-wood surface, can maintain it, and can build to the conditions at your property. It is a weaker fit when you want a nearly maintenance-free surface, cannot keep water away from the framing, or are planning substantial loads without a structural review.
Compare wood and composite on the decisions that affect ownership
| Decision axis | Questions to answer before choosing |
|---|---|
| Appearance and feel | Do you specifically want natural wood’s look and touch? Compare samples of the actual species or product available for your project; “wood” is not one uniform appearance. |
| Durability and exposure | How much rain, splash, humidity, ground contact, and slow drying will the deck receive? Select a treatment or naturally durable species appropriate to that use. |
| Upkeep | Will you clean the surface, inspect connections, and address water or damaged boards? Every decking product requires some care. |
| Installed cost | What do local contractors charge for your design, framing, lumber or boards, hardware, labor, and future maintenance? There is no universal cost winner established here. |
| Rules and safety | Which permits, guards, stairs, ledger details, setbacks, and site conditions apply in your jurisdiction? |
| Material compatibility | Are the treatment chemicals, screws, bolts, joist hardware, flashing, and connectors approved for contact with one another and for the exposure? |
Composite decking belongs in the comparison because it is a common alternative, not because it eliminates all maintenance. The BC Housing guide says preservative-treated or plastic-surfaced decking can require less maintenance than some other wood products, while emphasizing that all decking needs care. Composite boards also expand and contract, so installation must follow the product’s movement and fastening instructions.
Choose the wood category for the exposure
Pressure-treated lumber
Pressure treatment drives preservative chemicals into lumber to help protect it against decay and insects. It is a common outdoor-deck choice, but “treated” does not mean that every treated board is suitable for every location. Confirm the treatment designation and intended end use with the lumber supplier, and follow the treatment manufacturer’s handling and installation directions.
Cut ends, notches, and drilled holes can expose untreated wood inside a treated member. The 2018 International Residential Code model text calls for field treatment of such cuts, notches, and drilled holes in treated wood. Use the field-treatment product and method specified for the lumber system; do not assume that ordinary paint is an equivalent preservative.
Naturally decay-resistant lumber
Some species have natural resistance to decay and may be appropriate for exposed construction. Resistance still depends on moisture, detailing, ventilation, and the particular use. Ask the supplier what exposure and ground-contact conditions the species is rated for, and compare the actual boards you can buy rather than assuming every naturally durable species performs identically.

Composite decking
Composite boards can reduce some surface-maintenance work, but they are not maintenance-free. Keep the framing dry, clean the surface as directed, and allow for expansion and contraction at board ends and around fixed objects. A composite surface also does not correct an undersized frame, poor ledger attachment, or inadequate guard and stair construction.

Moisture management protects more than the walking surface. Plan for water to drain away, for members to dry between wetting events, and for the ledger connection to resist water entering the building. Edmonton’s uncovered-deck guide emphasizes drainage and drying, flashing at the ledger, compatible fasteners, and access for inspection and maintenance. Its advice is tied to Alberta’s code and should not be treated as a nationwide threshold.
- Drainage: Avoid details that trap leaves or create standing water. Provide a path for rain to leave the deck and for air to reach damp members.
- Ledger flashing: Use a flashing and water-management assembly appropriate to the wall system so water does not collect where the deck meets the house.
- Ground clearance: Keep wood away from persistent soil or splash exposure unless the lumber and design are specifically rated for it.
- Inspection access: Leave room to see and maintain the ledger, posts, joists, fasteners, and underside of the deck.
- End-grain protection: Treat field cuts as required by the lumber system and prevent exposed ends from remaining saturated.
The U.S. Forest Service’s 2019 technical report, Guidelines for the Selection and Use of Pressure-Treated Wood, discusses treatment selection, construction practice, expected service life, and environmental considerations. Its central practical lesson is to select the treatment for the end use and then build details that limit moisture exposure; treatment cannot compensate for a design that continually wets the framing.
Use compatible fasteners and connectors
Treated wood can be chemically aggressive toward unsuitable metals. The BC Housing guide warns that some metals are not appropriate for contact with treated wood and identifies hot-dipped galvanized and stainless-steel options for compatible applications. Choose screws, bolts, joist hangers, post bases, and other connectors only after identifying the lumber treatment and the exposure conditions.
A defensible shopping description is corrosion-resistant exterior deck screws compatible with pressure-treated lumber. Treat that as a category, not as approval of a particular brand or model. Read the lumber, fastener, and connector manufacturers’ instructions together; one component’s label does not override another component’s restrictions.

- Verify that the fastener is rated for exterior use and for the specific treated lumber chemistry.
- Use the connector manufacturer’s required nails, screws, bolts, washers, and installation pattern.
- Do not mix dissimilar metals casually where water can create galvanic corrosion.
- Replace visibly corroded fasteners and investigate why corrosion occurred before installing replacements.
Understand what codes and permits actually require
Deck rules are local. Seattle’s published deck guidance and Edmonton’s uncovered-deck guide both address structural support, attachments, guards, stairs, permits, and treated-wood details, but they are city- or province-specific examples. Your building department may adopt a different code edition, add amendments, or use different permit triggers.

The International Residential Code is a model code, not a universal permit. The 2018 IRC residential deck provisions state that deck wood materials addressed there must be No. 2 grade or better and either preservative-treated or naturally durable, and they require field treatment of cuts, notches, and drilled holes in treated wood. The 2021 IRC building-planning chapter and other adopted provisions may also affect site and safety requirements. Confirm the code edition and amendments adopted where the deck will be built.
Ask the building department before drawing the deck
- Describe the proposed height, footprint, attachment to the house, stairs, guards, and intended use.
- Ask whether a permit, site plan, structural drawings, or inspections are required.
- Confirm setbacks, property-line restrictions, utilities, easements, and any special rules for decks near slopes or water.
- Request the current requirements for ledger attachment, footings, guard openings, stair geometry, and electrical work if lighting or equipment is planned.
- Keep the approved drawings and inspection records for future repairs or a property sale.
Do not plan around a height threshold copied from another city. The same physical deck can fall under different permit or guard rules in different jurisdictions.
Design for loads, not just furniture
An elevated deck, unusual layout, long spans, or concentrated loads deserves more review than a simple low platform. Edmonton specifically identifies large loads such as hot tubs, fireplaces, and roofs as reasons for design review in its permitting context. BC Housing cautions that a heavy planter or hot tub can overload a deck or balcony that was not designed for it.
Recommended Free Tools
Tell the designer or building official about every intended load before sizing the structure. If you are adding a hot tub, masonry feature, roof, enclosure, or large built-in planter to an existing deck, obtain a professional assessment of the footings, beams, joists, ledger, posts, and connections. Never infer capacity from the fact that an older deck has not visibly failed.
Wet-service design is a professional decision
The American Wood Council explains that structural design values may need adjustment when wood members are regularly exposed to direct water. Its FAQ says the 2018 IRC residential deck span tables and AWC DCA-6 prescriptive guide are based on wet-service conditions. The designer, consulting with the code official, has final responsibility for deciding whether a particular deck is a wet- or dry-service application.
The FAQ’s reference to 19% moisture is a technical design condition, not a homeowner-facing lifespan or performance guarantee. Do not choose joist sizes from a generic chart without confirming the adopted code, span, species, grade, spacing, loads, and service condition for your project.

Build a maintenance plan you will actually follow
BC Housing states: “In practice, all decking products require a degree of cleaning and maintenance for optimal deck performance.” For wood, maintenance starts with keeping water moving and finding damage early rather than waiting for a visible failure.
- Clean: Remove leaves, soil, and organic buildup that hold moisture against boards and connections. Use a cleaning method compatible with the wood and any finish.
- Inspect: Look at the ledger, flashing, posts, beam ends, joist ends, stairs, guards, and fasteners. Pay particular attention to soft wood, splitting, movement, rust, and water traps.
- Check drainage: Make sure downspouts do not discharge onto the deck or foundation connection and that gaps and channels are not blocked.
- Repair promptly: Replace damaged boards and corroded connectors with compatible materials, and correct the moisture source instead of treating only the symptom.
- Respect finishes: If you use a stain or water-repellent coating, follow its preparation, recoat, and drying instructions; a coating is not a substitute for sound framing and flashing.
Composite boards still need cleaning and inspection. In addition, preserve the movement gaps and fastening details specified by the product manufacturer; pinning a board where it needs to move can cause buckling or premature damage.
Get a meaningful installed-cost comparison
No reliable, current wood-versus-composite installed-price comparison is established for every location. A quote that appears low may omit footings, demolition, stairs, guards, ledger work, flashing, permits, engineering, delivery, or finishing. A useful comparison uses the same design and scope for each material.
Request quotes with identical scope
- Provide the same plan showing footprint, height, stairs, guards, railings, access, and any special loads.
- Ask each contractor to itemize framing, decking, hardware, footings, flashing, permits, inspections, labor, disposal, and finishing.
- State the exact wood category or composite product being priced, including grade or treatment where applicable.
- Ask what maintenance the contractor assumes and which tasks are excluded after completion.
- Confirm whether engineering, utility locating, and repairs to the house wall are included or separate.
Compare total project scope and expected upkeep, not a per-board or per-square-foot number detached from the site. Local labor, access, soil, permitting, and structural requirements can change the result substantially.
Environmental claims need careful limits
The Forest Service report addresses environmental considerations for pressure-treated wood, but the available evidence does not establish a complete life-cycle comparison among all lumber species, preservative systems, and composite products. Avoid declaring one material universally greener or claiming a fixed carbon or disposal advantage without product-specific data.

- Fasteners and connectors are corrosion-resistant and approved for the selected lumber treatment.
- You have identified every concentrated load, including a possible hot tub, fireplace, roof, or heavy planter.
- Your local building department has confirmed permit, guard, stair, setback, and structural requirements.
- You have a realistic plan for cleaning, inspection, repairs, and any finish maintenance.
- You have received comparable local quotes for the complete installed scope.
Common failure modes and the corrective action
The boards look fine, but the ledger area is wet
Surface appearance does not prove that the house connection is sound. Stop adding loads, expose the area as safely as possible, and have the ledger, flashing, fasteners, and adjacent framing assessed. Repair the water-management detail before replacing boards.
Fasteners are rusting or staining the wood
Corrosion may indicate an incompatible metal, unsuitable treatment pairing, or persistent moisture. Identify the lumber treatment and connector specifications, then replace components with a compatible corrosion-resistant system rather than simply applying a surface cleaner.
A new composite surface is buckling
Check end gaps, perimeter clearances, joist spacing, fastening method, and heat or sunlight exposure against the product instructions. Composite movement requirements differ from those of wood; do not lock boards in place without the specified allowance.

A contractor cites another city’s permit exemption
Ask your own building department for a written interpretation of the current local rules. Seattle and Edmonton guidance illustrates why thresholds cannot be transferred across jurisdictions.
Bottom line: choose wood deliberately
A wood deck is worth considering when natural material is important and you are willing to design for moisture, use treatment or species suited to the exposure, install compatible hardware, meet local code, and maintain the finished deck. Composite may reduce some surface-maintenance work, but it still needs correct movement detailing and care. Neither option wins every project. The sound decision comes from a site-specific design, a local code check, and apples-to-apples installed quotes rather than appearance alone.
