A tankless water heater can be an excellent fit, but it is not an automatic upgrade. It is most compelling when you want a wall-mounted footprint and on-demand heating, and your home can support the required peak flow, fuel supply, venting, electrical work, and service. Before deciding, obtain a written, home-specific estimate from an experienced plumber and compare it with a properly sized storage tank or another suitable system.
What a tankless water heater does
A tankless, or demand, water heater stores no ready-to-use tank of hot water. When a tap opens, a flow sensor activates the unit. Water passes through a heat exchanger, is heated to the set temperature, and then travels to the fixture. When the tap closes, the heating cycle stops.

That operating pattern eliminates the standby heating associated with keeping a storage tank hot. It does not mean the unit creates unlimited heat under every condition. The heater still has a maximum flow rate and a maximum temperature rise, so its performance depends on incoming-water temperature, the desired outlet temperature, and how many fixtures are operating together.
Whole-home and point-of-use models
A whole-home unit is sized to serve several fixtures and appliances from one installation. A point-of-use unit serves a dedicated location, such as a sink or a shower. Point-of-use equipment can be useful where a remote fixture needs a targeted solution, but it does not replace a correctly sized whole-home system for a house with substantial simultaneous demand.

Gas, electric, and condensing designs
Gas-fired tankless models typically provide greater heating capacity than electric-resistance models, which is why gas is often considered for homes with multiple concurrent hot-water uses. Electric units may suit a smaller load or a location without a gas connection, but the electrical service and the unit’s output must be checked rather than assumed.
Condensing gas models recover more heat from combustion exhaust. They also introduce design requirements for condensate drainage and venting. Those details belong in the installation plan and written quote, not as an afterthought after equipment is purchased.
When a tankless heater is worth considering
Tankless is worth serious consideration in new construction, a major remodel, or a replacement project where the gas, electrical, venting, and plumbing work can be planned together. It can also make sense when a gas-storage heater is being replaced and the existing layout can be adapted without disproportionate retrofit work.
- You want a smaller, wall-mounted equipment footprint rather than a large storage cylinder.
- Your household’s peak demand can be measured and matched to a unit’s flow and temperature-rise capacity.
- You are prepared to pay for any required gas-line, venting, electrical, condensate, and permit work.
- A qualified installer and a technician who services the exact model are available locally.
- You will compare total installed cost and realistic operating cost with other water-heating options.
It is less attractive when the home has unusually high simultaneous demand, limited gas or electrical capacity, difficult venting, or no dependable local service for the model under consideration. A generic promise of “endless hot water” does not resolve those constraints.

How to size the system correctly
Sizing is the central technical decision. An experienced plumber should estimate the fixtures and appliances that may run at the same time, add their flow requirements, and check whether the proposed unit can deliver that flow at the home’s incoming-water temperature and required temperature rise.
- List concurrent uses. Consider combinations such as showers, a faucet, a clothes washer, a dishwasher, or a bathtub filling at the same time. Use the household’s actual routines rather than an idealized average day.
- Estimate peak flow. The installer should express the combined demand in gallons per minute and identify the assumptions behind every fixture and appliance value.
- Account for cold-water temperature. Colder incoming water requires more heating capacity to reach the same outlet temperature. A unit that appears adequate in a mild climate may deliver less flow during the coldest part of the year.
- Check the unit’s performance at the required temperature rise. Do not rely only on a headline maximum flow number; ask for the capacity at the temperature conditions used for your home.
- Decide whether one unit is enough. A home that routinely exceeds one unit’s capacity may need a different configuration, more than one unit, or a storage-based alternative.
If demand exceeds the heater’s capacity, the result can be reduced temperature, lower flow, or the need to stagger uses. Correct sizing is therefore more important than selecting the largest-looking model on a display.

What “continuous” hot water really means
A tankless unit does not run out of stored hot water because it has no storage volume to empty. As long as water is flowing within the unit’s rated capacity and the fuel or electrical supply remains available, it can continue heating. That benefit is conditional, however: simultaneous fixtures can exceed the heat exchanger’s flow and temperature-rise limits.
Tankless equipment also does not remove the time needed for hot water to travel through the home’s pipes. A distant shower or sink can still receive cold water first. Delivery delay is a plumbing-layout issue, separate from the heater’s ability to keep producing hot water. Ask whether a recirculation arrangement or a point-of-use solution is appropriate if waiting at a remote fixture is a major concern.

Retrofit work that can change the decision
Replacing a storage heater with a tankless unit is often more than a simple equipment swap. Have the installer inspect the complete route from utilities to fixtures and identify every modification in writing.
- Gas capacity: The existing gas line may be too small for the higher input of a gas tankless model and may need replacement or resizing.
- Venting: The new heater can require a different vent material, route, termination, or combustion-air arrangement. Condensing models also require condensate management.
- Electrical access: Controls, ignition, pumps, or electric heating elements may require a suitable circuit and accessible power.
- Drainage: Condensing equipment produces condensate that must be routed according to the installation instructions and local code.
- Location and clearances: Wall mounting changes service access, combustion clearances, and the relationship to windows, doors, and other openings.
- Permits and inspections: Local plumbing, gas, electrical, and building requirements may apply. Confirm which permits the quote includes and who schedules inspections.
- Multiple units: Higher demand or the building’s layout may call for more than one heater, adding controls, piping, venting, and service considerations.
Because requirements vary by model and jurisdiction, an installer should verify them against the manufacturer’s instructions and local code rather than offering a one-size-fits-all promise.
Benefits beyond the smaller footprint
Less standby heating
A storage heater periodically uses energy to maintain the temperature of water that may not be needed immediately. On-demand operation avoids that storage-related standby loss. Whether that produces a meaningful reduction in your bill depends on your existing equipment, fuel and electricity rates, household usage, and installation details.
Hot-water production matched to use
The heater operates when a hot-water tap or appliance calls for it. This can be useful for households that have long periods of low demand followed by concentrated use, provided the unit is sized for the concentrated period.

Wall-mounted equipment
Removing a large tank can free floor space and may simplify planning in a utility room, addition, or remodel. The wall-mounted cabinet still needs service clearance, utility connections, venting where applicable, and safe access; it cannot simply be placed anywhere an old tank once stood.

Higher retrofit complexity
Gas-line, venting, electrical, condensate, and permit work can make the installation substantially more involved than replacing one storage tank with another. The only useful comparison is the complete installed scope, not the equipment label price.
Output limits during peaks
“Endless” supply applies only within the unit’s rated capacity. Running several high-flow fixtures at once can exceed that limit. A household may need to change timing habits, select a different configuration, or retain storage capacity.
Delivery delay remains
Water sitting in the pipes cools between uses. Tankless heating begins when flow is detected, but the hot water still has to travel from the heater to the fixture. The heater therefore cannot by itself guarantee instant hot water at every tap.

Service expertise matters
Consumer guidance from the Georgia Attorney General notes that some owners have difficulty finding technicians familiar with tankless maintenance and repair. Ask about local service for the exact model before buying. A plumber who installs storage heaters may not support every tankless brand or control system.
Maintenance is model- and water-condition-specific
There is no single maintenance interval that applies to every tankless heater. Follow the owner’s manual and ask how local water conditions affect inspection, cleaning, scale control, filters, and other service tasks. Get the recommended work and its expected frequency in writing.

| Factor | Tankless system | Storage-tank system |
|---|---|---|
| How water is heated | Heats flowing water when a tap or appliance calls for it | Maintains a stored volume of hot water |
| Standby heating | No storage-tank standby heating | Requires energy to keep stored water hot |
| Supply characteristic | Continuous only up to the unit’s flow and temperature-rise capacity | Limited by the tank’s stored volume until recovery adds more hot water |
| Physical format | Wall-mounted cabinet | Tank occupying floor and vertical clearance |
| Gas versus electric capacity | Gas models typically have greater heating capacity than electric-resistance models | Capacity depends on the selected storage heater and fuel |
| Replacement scope | May require gas-line, venting, electrical, condensate, and permit changes | May allow a simpler replacement when the existing connections are compatible |
| Hot-water wait | Still subject to the time water takes to travel through the plumbing | Also subject to the plumbing distance from the tank to the fixture |
| Service decision | Confirm a technician supports the exact model and its maintenance requirements | Confirm equivalent support for the selected storage model |
Use this comparison as a framework, then replace general descriptions with the conditions in your home. A suitable storage heater can be the better choice when installation constraints or peak demand overwhelm the advantages of on-demand heating.
How to evaluate an installer’s proposal
- Request an in-home assessment. The installer should inspect utilities, pipe routing, venting possibilities, electrical access, water conditions, and the locations of major fixtures.
- Require a written sizing basis. The proposal should state the assumed simultaneous flow, incoming-water temperature, required temperature rise, and the unit’s resulting capacity.
- Separate equipment from retrofit work. Ask for line items for gas, venting, electrical, condensate, plumbing, permits, inspections, controls, and any wall or finish repairs.
- Ask for alternatives. Have the contractor price a properly sized storage option and any practical point-of-use or recirculation approach relevant to your layout.
- Test the savings assumptions. Any operating-cost estimate should identify the current equipment, fuel or electricity rates, usage assumptions, and whether the figure is a modeled comparison rather than a guaranteed bill reduction.
- Confirm service coverage. Ask who will maintain and repair the exact model, what the manual requires, and whether local water quality changes the service plan.
- Check permits and rebates. Verify which permits are included and check current local rebate programs and eligibility rules yourself before treating an incentive as part of the economics.
- Check references. Ask for references for comparable tankless installations, not only general plumbing work.
Questions to ask before signing
- What peak flow and temperature rise did you use to size this unit?
- Can the existing gas line support it, or is a larger line required?
- What vent route, combustion-air provisions, electrical circuit, and condensate drain are needed?
- Which permits and code-required inspections apply, and are they included in the quoted price?
- What is the complete installed price, including every utility upgrade and finish repair?
- Which assumptions produce the estimated operating savings, and which costs could change that estimate?
- Who services this exact model locally, and what maintenance does the manufacturer require?
- How do local water conditions affect cleaning, scale control, or other service?
- Which storage, point-of-use, or recirculation alternatives did you evaluate, and what would make you choose one instead?
A practical decision rule
Choose tankless when three conditions line up: the unit can meet your measured peak demand, the home can accommodate the required retrofit work at an acceptable total cost, and dependable model-specific service is available. If any one of those conditions is uncertain, pause the purchase and obtain another written proposal or compare a storage system on the same basis.
Do not base the decision on a generic payback period or a showroom claim about unlimited hot water. The useful comparison is your home’s actual demand, utility rates, installation scope, maintenance plan, and alternatives. A written, in-home estimate gives you the information needed to make that comparison.
