Some designers are choosing shower curtains over glass, but not because doors have suddenly gone out of fashion. In interviews published by House & Garden in May 2024, designers favored curtains mainly for their softness, color and flexibility—especially in shower-over-bath rooms. A separate 2025 U.S. Houzz bathroom survey found that 84% of renovating homeowners selected a shower with a door, while 13% selected a curtain as the entry style. The practical answer is conditional: a well-specified curtain can be the better design and access solution in a compact or awkward bathroom, while a glass enclosure usually gives more dependable spray control and an open view of the tile.

Are designers really ditching glass shower doors?

The headline captures a genuine design preference, but it overstates the scale of the change. The strongest evidence comes from a small set of designer interviews rather than a representative survey. In House & Garden (May 2024), Lonika Chande said she was “team shower curtain” because clients liked the softness and the opportunity to add fabric and color to a utilitarian room. Emma Ainscough likewise described a curtain as a way to make the shower more decorative.

That preference is most visible in shower-over-bath layouts, where a curtain can move completely out of the way and avoids the visual weight of a fixed panel. It does not establish that designers, homeowners or the market as a whole are abandoning glass.

What the renovation data says

The 2025 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study reports that 84% of homeowners who had completed, were undertaking or planned a bathroom renovation during 2024–25 chose a shower with a door. Thirteen percent chose a curtain as the shower-entry style. Those figures describe U.S. renovation decisions, not designer opinions, and they do not measure whether the share is rising or falling. The two sources answer different questions and should not be combined into a universal trend claim.

Why the preference can look stronger in design coverage

Design magazines often feature projects where a curtain solves a visible problem: a narrow bath, a sloping ceiling, an inconvenient corner or a room that needs more color. A standard survey includes every type of renovated bathroom, including large walk-in showers where a door is straightforward. The result is a conditional design movement, not a wholesale replacement.

Why a curtain can be the better choice

It adds softness to hard finishes

Tile, sanitaryware, metal fittings and mirrors create a room of hard, reflective surfaces. Fabric introduces movement, texture and a controllable dose of pattern. A plain cotton outer curtain can calm a busy tile scheme; a stripe or contrast trim can make a small bath feel intentionally designed rather than temporary. Because the fabric is replaceable, you can change the color scheme without rebuilding the shower.

Chande specifically points to contrast trims and backing fabrics. That approach lets the visible side of the curtain coordinate with towels, paint or window treatments while a separate waterproof liner handles the wet side.

It handles awkward footprints and clearances

Blanca Sanchez of Halo Design Interiors told Homebuilding that curtains “work brilliantly for shower-over-bath layouts and narrow footprints, where a rigid panel or door would feel cramped or awkward.” A curtain does not need a door swing, and it can be pulled fully aside when someone needs to enter, clean the bath or help a child.

Designers also cite sloped ceilings, corners that do not accept a standard enclosure and some level-access showers or wet rooms. In these situations, a fixed panel may block controls or create a difficult reach path. The Glass & Metal Alliance similarly notes that smaller spatial configurations, door swings and access to shower controls can complicate glass planning.

It is easier to alter as needs change

A rail, rings and curtain can be changed with comparatively little disruption. That matters in a family bathroom that may later need wider access, or in a rental where a permanent glass installation is impractical. Glass is a more durable, fixed decision: changing the enclosure can affect waterproofing, tile and wall finishes.

Shower curtain or glass screen? Compare the real trade-offs

Decision factor Fabric curtain Glass screen or door
Visual effect Adds softness, color, pattern and texture; can conceal the bath area when closed. Keeps the shower visually open and leaves tilework continuously visible.
Space and access Moves aside and needs no door swing; useful in narrow, sloped or irregular rooms. Creates a defined enclosure, but panel position, door swing and control access must be planned.
Water containment Can contain spray when correctly sized, weighted and positioned, but may shift or gap. Generally provides more reliable containment when correctly fitted and sealed.
Cleaning Requires airflow, periodic washing and eventual liner replacement. Requires regular wiping, with limescale more noticeable in hard-water areas.
Installation and changeability Usually quicker to install and simple to replace or restyle. Higher-upfront-cost fixture in the descriptions from Homebuilding; selected for permanence and longevity.
Lifetime cost evidence The cited sources do not provide a like-for-like cost, lifespan or hygiene study, so no universal long-term saving can be claimed.

Will a shower curtain keep water off the bathroom floor?

It can, but containment depends on the whole installation rather than the fabric alone. A curtain that is too short, too narrow or allowed to billow away from the bath will let spray escape. The liner must sit inside the bath or showering area; the decorative fabric should remain outside it.

Use a separate waterproof liner

House & Garden describes a water-repellent liner behind a cotton outer curtain. Keep the liner inside the bath during use and hang the decorative layer on the room side. Replace the liner when it becomes worn or mould starts to appear. This arrangement lets you launder or change the visible fabric without sacrificing the water barrier.

Specify the rail and curtain as a system

Homebuilding recommends choosing the length and fullness deliberately, using a weighted hem and selecting a ceiling-fixed or curved rail where the room requires it. A curved rail can keep fabric away from the bather while maintaining coverage around a bath; a ceiling fixing can make sense under a sloped ceiling or where wall fixing is limited. Coordinate the rail finish with other fittings, and choose rust-resistant rings or gliders.

There is no single curtain dimension that works for every bath. Measure the actual opening, account for the rail position and ensure the liner reaches into the bath without dragging on the floor. If the shower head sprays toward the opening, adjust the rail, liner overlap or screen strategy rather than expecting fabric to stop a direct jet.

Wet rooms need a water-management plan

A curtain can improve access in a level-access shower, but it does not correct poor falls, drainage or splash-zone planning. Confirm that the floor is designed to direct water to the drain and that the curtain can cover the spray path. If the rest of the room is not intended to get wet, a fixed screen may be the safer solution.

Are shower curtains easier to clean than glass?

Neither option wins in every bathroom. They create different chores, and local water conditions and household habits matter more than a blanket rule.

Curtain maintenance

  • Spread the liner and outer curtain after each shower so air can reach both surfaces.
  • Provide effective bathroom ventilation; Sanchez warns that curtains need good ventilation and periodic washing to prevent mould.
  • Wash the fabric and liner according to their care instructions, and replace a liner that stays stained, cracked or musty.
  • Keep the lower edge from bunching in standing water, where slow drying encourages mildew.

Glass maintenance

  • Wipe or squeegee wet glass regularly to reduce water spots and limescale.
  • Pay attention to seals, tracks and corners where residue accumulates.
  • Expect cleaning frequency to increase in hard-water areas or where several people use the shower each day.

The cited coverage offers no controlled hygiene comparison, so claims that one choice is universally healthier or easier to maintain are not supported.

How cost and longevity differ

Interviewees cited by Homebuilding describe curtains as quicker to install and replace. Glass is characterized as the higher-upfront-cost choice that is often selected for longevity. The sources do not provide comparable prices, expected lifespans or a calculation of lifetime savings. Your actual total will depend on the rail, liner, fabric, hardware, glazing, labor, wall preparation and any changes needed to tile or waterproofing.

Think of the decision as a timing choice. A curtain spreads spending across replaceable parts and makes a style change inexpensive. A glass enclosure concentrates more of the investment at installation but can remain in place for many years if the hardware and seals are maintained.

Which option suits your bathroom?

Choose a curtain when:

  • Your shower is over a bath and you want the bath edge clear when the shower is not in use.
  • The room is narrow, has a sloped ceiling or contains an awkward corner that makes a rigid panel intrusive.
  • A door swing would conflict with the toilet, vanity, radiator or shower controls.
  • You want color, pattern or seasonal change without replacing tile.
  • Someone using the bathroom benefits from an opening that can be pulled fully aside.

Choose glass when:

  • Keeping spray inside a defined zone is the overriding concern.
  • You want uninterrupted sightlines to tile and a visually open walk-in shower.
  • The room has adequate clearance for the chosen panel or door and easy access to controls.
  • The household will reliably wipe the glass and maintain seals.

Pause and redesign before choosing either

If the shower head points directly at the opening, the floor does not drain correctly or the proposed curtain cannot cover the splash zone, solve those water-management issues first. Aesthetic preference cannot compensate for a layout that routinely wets the floor.

How to make a curtain look deliberate rather than temporary

  1. Measure the opening. Record the bath or shower length, wall-to-wall width, ceiling height and the location of controls, windows and obstructions.
  2. Choose the rail. Decide between a straight, curved or ceiling-fixed rail according to the footprint and the direction of spray. Check that the fixing method suits the wall or ceiling structure.
  3. Set the curtain proportions. Select enough fullness for the fabric to close without pulling tight, and a length that keeps the liner inside the wet area while avoiding a puddle on the floor.
  4. Pair the outer fabric with a liner. Put the water-repellent liner on the bath side and the decorative curtain on the room side. Plan for the liner to be replaceable.
  5. Add stability. Use a weighted hem and rust-resistant rings or gliders so the curtain hangs straight and moves smoothly.
  6. Coordinate finishes. Match the rail and rings to the bathroom’s metalwork, and repeat one fabric color in paint, towels or accessories rather than introducing several unrelated accents.
  7. Test before finalizing. Run the shower at its normal angle and check the floor, bath edge, liner overlap and control access. Adjust the rail or curtain before treating the installation as complete.
  8. Set a maintenance routine. Ventilate after use, spread the curtain to dry and wash the fabric and liner periodically.

Common curtain problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause Adjustment
Water reaches the floor Short or narrow curtain, gaps at the ends, or spray aimed toward the opening. Increase coverage, use a curved rail or liner overlap, and redirect the shower head if possible.
Curtain blows inward Light fabric, strong extraction airflow or an unweighted hem. Use a weighted hem, improve the rail geometry and check that ventilation is not pulling the liner out of the bath.
Mould appears at the lower edge Curtain remains bunched and damp; ventilation or washing is inadequate. Spread it fully after use, ventilate, wash periodically and replace a deteriorated liner.
Room feels visually cluttered Busy pattern combined with competing tile and hardware finishes. Use a quieter fabric or repeat one existing room color; keep the hardware finish consistent.
Access feels restricted Rail, curtain or liner blocks controls or the entry path. Reposition the rail, use a ceiling fixing or select a layout that pulls farther aside.

The practical verdict

Shower curtains are still in style when they solve a real spatial or design need. They bring softness and changeability, and they are particularly effective around baths, in narrow rooms and under awkward ceilings. Glass remains the more dependable choice for containing spray and preserving an open view, which helps explain why it was selected by 84% of homeowners in the 2025 U.S. Houzz renovation survey. Choose based on your room’s clearances, water-management plan, maintenance habits and desired visual effect—not on the claim that one material has replaced the other.
