A narrow side yard can become a useful play space without making the trampoline look crowded or turning the clearance zone into a hazard. Start by placing the trampoline on flat, level ground with the required open space, then build play features, planting, storage and color around—not inside—that safety envelope. The eight ideas below cover active play, art, sensory planting, imaginative play, seating and transitions while preserving supervision and safe fall zones.

Set the trampoline safety envelope first

Design everything else after the trampoline is correctly positioned. Health Canada says, “Set up the trampoline on flat, level ground.” Its guidance also calls for at least 2 metres of clearance around the sides and 8 metres of unobstructed overhead space. Keep the trampoline away from walls, fences, trees and garden furniture, as advised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

  • Allow one jumper at a time and provide active adult supervision.
  • Use a safety net and shock-absorbing pads that cover the springs, hooks and frame.
  • Inspect the mat, springs, frame, net and padding before use; replace worn, cracked, missing or damaged parts immediately.
  • Keep branches, ropes, hard ornaments, furniture, loose toys and garden tools outside the trampoline use zone.

Mark the clearance boundary during planning with temporary stakes or chalk. A feature that looks harmless on paper can become a collision point once children run, jump or carry toys through the yard.

Eight side-yard play area ideas

1. Create a defined trampoline court

Give the trampoline its own visual court instead of allowing it to float in a mixed-use strip. Keep the ground level and use restrained, coordinated colors for the perimeter edging, nearby storage and any ground covering. A simple rectangular or circular border makes the trampoline look intentional while reminding children and adults where the open clearance begins.

Use low edging that cannot become a trip hazard and does not intrude into the required clearance. Avoid raised planters, boulders or decorative posts beside the frame. If the side yard is narrow, prioritize the full safety perimeter over a decorative border.

2. Add a soft-surface active strip beside the court

Run a separate strip of playground mulch, engineered wood fiber or tested rubber beside the trampoline, never inside its clearance zone. This strip can support balance beams, low climbing elements or a short route for stepping and jumping activities appropriate to the equipment. Keep all added equipment at ground level unless it has its own professionally assessed fall area.

Contain loose-fill material so it does not migrate under the trampoline or onto a hard path. Leave a clear transition between the strip and the trampoline court, and rake loose material regularly to maintain even coverage.

3. Reserve a chalk and art lane

A fence-side hardscape panel can become a washable chalk wall or outdoor art lane. Choose a surface that can be rinsed without sending colored water toward the trampoline. Store chalk, washable paint and brushes in a lidded bin outside the trampoline use zone so children do not carry small supplies onto the mat.

Keep art furniture low and stable, and place it where an adult can supervise without standing in the jumping area. Do not hang cords, banners or art boards where they could fall or be pulled into the enclosure.

4. Build a sensory planting edge

Use a narrow planting border for texture and scent: soft grasses, non-sharp foliage and aromatic plants can turn an unused edge into a sensory stop. Position the planting outside both the trampoline fall and access zones. Select species without thorns, brittle stems or low branches that could strike a child.

Keep mature plant size in mind rather than designing only for the nursery-pot size. Prune branches before they extend toward the enclosure, and choose ground-level edging that will not expose sharp stakes or metal corners.

5. Add an imaginative-play nook

A small playhouse, mud kitchen or pretend shop can occupy a dead-end section of the side yard. Ground-level equipment does not create the same elevated fall-height issue as a platform, but it still needs clear circulation and adult supervision. Place it beyond the trampoline clearance and leave enough room for children to enter and exit without crossing the jumping area.

Use washable, weather-resistant surfaces and provide a defined place for mud, water and pretend-cooking accessories. Keep buckets, toy tools and loose props in a closed container when play ends so they cannot become projectiles or trip hazards.

6. Lay out a stepping-stone or balance route

A short balance route adds movement without competing with the trampoline. Use generously spaced, rounded and stable stepping stones or low balance elements. Anchor each piece so it cannot rock or slide, and maintain an unobstructed path around the route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep this activity physically separate from the trampoline. A child should be able to complete the route without approaching the frame, and an adult should be able to walk around both activities while supervising.

7. Make a shade and reading corner

Place a bench, compact shade structure or reading chair beyond the trampoline clearance area. This gives adults a comfortable supervision point and creates a calmer counterbalance to active play. Choose furniture with stable legs and rounded edges, and anchor or weight shade structures according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not use the shade structure, bench or a nearby table as part of the trampoline access route. Keep umbrellas, folding chairs and other movable items outside the marked hazard boundary whenever the trampoline is in use.

8. Organize a storage and transition zone

Use the yard entrance for a weatherproof toy chest, shoe bench and hand-washing point. This transition zone keeps bikes, scooters, balls, shoes and garden tools from accumulating near the jumping surface. A lidded chest also prevents loose items from blowing into the enclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place storage where children naturally pause before entering the play area, but not where an open lid or projecting handle can narrow the trampoline clearance. Add hooks or a rack for helmets and outdoor clothing, and establish a simple end-of-play routine: shoes and toys return to storage, then the trampoline is checked for debris.

How to decorate around a trampoline without creating hazards

Use color in elements that stay outside the use zone: perimeter edging, coordinated storage, washable flags attached well away from the enclosure and low planting. Keep decoration low, fixed and easy to inspect. Avoid hanging ropes, string lights with reachable loops, hard sculptures, freestanding signs and ornaments that can be thrown or blown into the trampoline.

Branches deserve a seasonal check. A tree that clears the trampoline in spring may extend into the overhead space after growth, and wind can move flexible limbs farther than expected. Trim or relocate plants before they enter the 8-metre overhead requirement. Do not rely on a safety net to stop contact with nearby objects; the net reduces fall-off risk but does not eliminate injuries from the mat, frame or springs.

Choose the right surface for the surrounding play area

Surface choice depends on the activity, drainage, maintenance capacity and the tested fall-height performance of the exact product. Loose-fill materials need regular care; fixed rubber systems need careful specification and installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Surface Where it fits Benefits Limitations and requirements
Mulch or wood chips Separate strip around or beside play features Readily available loose-fill material that can soften falls; the ACCC specifically names pine bark or woodchips around a trampoline. Needs containment, drainage, raking and replenishment. Material must stay out of the trampoline clearance and access path.
Engineered wood fiber Playground-oriented loose-fill zone Designed for playground use and can create a tidy, natural-looking strip. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) home-playground guidance says loose fill should be at least 6 inches for equipment under 4 feet, contained around the perimeter and kept off concrete or asphalt. Check the requirements for the specific equipment and fall height.
Rubber tiles Fixed, defined play surface More stable and visually consistent than loose fill; useful where edging and drainage are planned well. Compare the documented fall height, drainage, edge treatment and installation method for the exact product. A similar-looking tile is not proof of equivalent impact attenuation.
Poured-in-place rubber Custom, permanent play zone Continuous surface with a clean transition and no loose chips to rake. CPSC says these installations generally require a professional. Request product-specific ASTM F1292 impact-attenuation documentation for the intended fall height.

For public-playground context, CPSC guidance specifies at least 12 inches of loose-fill surfacing or tested rubber-like mats, with protective surfacing extending at least 6 feet in all directions. A home side yard is not automatically subject to every public-playground specification, so use the requirements and tested fall-height data for your own equipment. The Access Board also notes that accessible surfacing can be integrated into a play-area theme, but accessibility must be confirmed for the exact product rather than assumed from a similar material.

A practical installation sequence

  1. Measure the site. Mark the trampoline footprint, the 2-metre side clearance and the full overhead area. Identify fences, walls, trees, branches, utilities and drainage paths.
  2. Set the trampoline first. Level the ground, install the net and padding, and verify that the frame, springs and mat are in good condition.
  3. Mark no-go zones. Use visible edging or a change in surface outside the clearance, without adding raised obstacles or sharp borders.
  4. Assign activity zones. Put art, planting, imaginative play, balance elements, seating and storage in separate areas with clear circulation between them.
  5. Install surfacing to its specification. Contain loose fill, provide drainage and maintain the stated depth, or use a qualified installer for poured-in-place systems and retain the product’s impact documentation.
  6. Add decor last. Use coordinated colors and low, fixed features only after safety distances and supervision sightlines are confirmed.
  7. Test the route. Walk the yard carrying a toy and supervising from the seating point. Remove anything that narrows access, blocks sightlines or could enter the trampoline zone.

Common layout mistakes and fixes

  • Putting mulch directly under the frame: Keep the trampoline on its prepared, level base and place impact-absorbing material in the surrounding play area as specified, not where it interferes with the frame or inspection.
  • Using furniture as decoration beside the trampoline: Move benches, tables and chairs beyond the clearance boundary.
  • Assuming a net makes every placement safe: Preserve the side and overhead clearances and inspect the mat, frame, springs and net.
  • Choosing a surface by appearance alone: Obtain fall-height and impact-attenuation documentation for the exact rubber or loose-fill product.
  • Letting loose toys accumulate: Add a lidded storage chest at the entry and return items after every session.
  • Planting thorny or brittle species: Replace them with low, non-sharp plants and prune before branches reach the enclosure.

What to buy or specify

For a safe, maintainable side-yard project, match each purchase to the equipment and the site rather than choosing by color alone.

  • A replacement safety net matched to the trampoline model and dimensions.
  • Spring and frame padding that fully covers the springs, hooks and frame; replace cracked, missing or weather-damaged pieces.
  • Playground-rated mulch or engineered wood fiber with a containment plan, drainage and a schedule for top-ups.
  • Outdoor rubber tiles or poured-in-place rubber with documented tested fall height, drainage details and edge treatment.
  • Professional installation when the selected poured-in-place system requires it.
  • Weatherproof, lidded storage and stable, low furniture positioned outside the clearance zone.

The strongest design is not the one with the most equipment. It is a side yard in which the trampoline has a clear, inspectable court, every other activity has its own place, and adults can supervise without navigating obstacles.
