The Sister’s Choice quilt block is a traditional 5-by-5 patchwork design made from 33 sewn pieces, including eight half-square-triangle units. Its layout works at 10 or 12½ inches finished, among other sizes that divide evenly into five equal grid sections. Make the triangles first, arrange the patches in five rows, then sew the rows together.
What is a Sister’s Choice quilt block?
Sister’s Choice is a traditional block arranged on a 5-by-5 grid. The layout contains 17 squares and eight half-square-triangle (HST) units, for 33 sewn pieces in total. The name is commonly associated with the Ladies Art Company around 1890; quilt-pattern cataloger Barbara Brackman identifies it as block #1802c. Quilt Block Atlas
The design’s appearance depends on how light, medium and dark fabrics are placed. Strong value contrast can emphasize diagonal chains or a grid; a scrappy mix of prints gives the same patchwork layout a more varied look.

What finished sizes work?
Because the block has five equal grid sections, sizes that give each section a convenient ½-inch increment fall in 2½-inch steps. The listed finished sizes are:
- 2½ inches
- 5 inches
- 7½ inches
- 10 inches
- 12½ inches
- 15 inches
- 17½ inches
- 20 inches
Both 10 and 12½ inches are practical choices. A 12-inch finished block does not divide cleanly on the ruler grid; Quilt Block Atlas recommends 10 or 12½ inches instead. Its cutting chart for a 12½-inch finished block uses 3-inch squares for the background and fabric A, plus 3⅜-inch squares for each HST pair. These are starting cut sizes that include seam allowance. How to assemble the block
- Make eight HST units. Pair and sew the squares for the triangle units according to your chosen pattern, then trim or square them to the size required by its layout.
- Lay out the five rows. Arrange the HSTs and squares in a 5-by-5 grid, checking the direction of each triangle and the intended light-to-dark pattern.
- Sew each row. Join the five units in each row from left to right, keeping their order consistent with the layout.
- Join the rows. Sew the five rows together, matching intersections and seams as you go.

Choosing and planning fabric
You can make Sister’s Choice with two dominant colors or use a scrappy assortment. In either approach, the value relationships—the relative lightness and darkness of the fabrics—help determine whether the pattern reads as connected diagonals, a more regular grid or a lively mix of patches.

- For clear chains or a grid: choose fabrics with enough contrast to distinguish the HSTs from neighboring squares.
- For a scrappy look: vary prints and colors while keeping a consistent light, medium and dark balance if you want the block’s structure to remain visible.
- If you are unsure about contrast: photograph a fabric layout in black and white or sew a small test unit before cutting the full set.
For a larger scrappy project, Cindy Carter’s 2009 pattern combines 13 Sister’s Choice blocks with 12 Snowball blocks in a 69-by-69-inch quilt. Pattern options and quilt sizes
Published patterns differ in block measurements, fabric plans and project sizes. Check whether the block size is finished or unfinished before cutting: seam allowance changes the measurement, and a block listed as unfinished will be larger than its finished size in the quilt.

Where the name comes from
